GRAPHIC NOVEL OF THE LIFE OF THOMAS PAINE

A new series of Invisible Histories talks, to be live-streamed weekly on Wednesdays at 2pm via Salford's Working Class Movement Library, kicks off on 3rd February with a talk on writer, philosopher and revolutionary, Thomas Paine, by political cartoonist and graphic novelist Paul 'Polyp' Fitzgerald.

Paul is creating a new graphic novel on the life of Paine and a crowdfunder begins on 9th February, Paine's birth date, to help realise the project.

THOUSANDS OF EUROPEANS IN GREATER MANCHESTER NOT APPLIED FOR EU SETTLEMENT SCHEME

SALFORD HAS SECOND HIGHEST NUMBER OF SETTLEMENT APPLICATIONS IN GREATER MANCHESTER

European Union nationals have until 30th June to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme if they and their families wish to remain in the UK without losing rights. By the end of September 2020, there were 20,580 applications from Salford, the second highest number in Greater Manchester.

Europia, which offers advice and help, is trying to get as many EU nationals as possible to apply for the scheme. So far, Polish and Italian people have the highest number of applications from Greater Manchester.

Salford has 103 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 111, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 325.3, down from 330.3. There have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, the latest interactive Government map of the city shows Patricroft as having the highest 7 day rolling rate of infections, with Broughton Park having the lowest.

SALFORD COUNCIL – A SINKING SHIP?

Salford City Council's 'new' City Solicitor and Monitoring Officer, Sian Roxborough has resigned after less than a year in office. She joins Chief Executive, Jim Taylor, and Planning Chief, Chris Findley, who also recently bailed out of the Council.

Ms Roxborough didn't give any reason for her sudden departure but the Council is currently embroiled in a potential High Court case surrounding the old Police HQ, while the two main political parties have been squabbling over the Local Plan, and a councillor still hasn't been before a Standards Committee after almost a year...

SALFORD HAS 111 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS OVER 30,000 VACCINES ADMINISTERED

SALFORD INFECTIONS REDUCING SLOWER THAN IN THE REST OF GREATER MANCHESTER

Salford has 111 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 103, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 330.3, down from 333.4 but still the highest rate in Greater Manchester. Rates of infection, says Salford's Director of Public Health, "are reducing much slower in Salford than the rest of Greater Manchester". There have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, over 32,000 doses of vaccine have been administered in Salford through the hospital and community hubs, to residents, patients and health care staff.

WALKDEN STATION PARK AND RIDE GETS GO AHEAD

OVER 100 PARK N RIDE PLACES AS TRAIN COMMUTING ENCOURAGED

Salford City Council has given planning permission for a new park and ride facility off Chestnut Avenue near Walkden Station. It will provide over one hundred parking spaces, four motorcycle bays and cycle storage.

"Making public transport more accessible and appealing is vital if we're serious about reducing congestion on our roads, which is why park and ride schemes like this one are so important" says Councillor Mark Aldred, Chair of the Greater Manchester Transport Committee.

Salford has 103 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 126, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 333.4, down from 346.9. The infection rate in the over 60s age group is rising in Salford, and there have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, teachers' union, the NEU, has launched an Education Recovery Plan for the wider reopening of schools which includes an acceptance "that a full return by all students may not be possible for some time".

Meanwhile, GM Mayor, Andy Burnham, said at his press conference yesterday that "we are in the most dangerous moment of this pandemic", with peak pressure on the NHS expected to be hit this weekend, as he again urged people to abide by the regulations. He was a "little concerned" about reports of cuts in vaccine supply to the North West but had been reassured of enough to meet the mid-Feb target of vaccinating the top four priority groups.

COVID DEATHS MOUNT AS GM REMEMBERS

Today, Salford Royal Hospital has announced a further five new virus-related deaths, making a tragic total of 15 deaths so far this week. As Britain passed the 100,000 deaths mark yesterday, Greater Manchester has seen a total of almost six thousand deaths since the start of the pandemic.

"These are names, not numbers" Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham said today, highlighting a GM Remembers online book of remembrance.

On Thursday May 6th, there are three local elections due – there's the election for Salford City Mayor and Greater Manchester Mayor, plus every single one of the sixty ward seats in the city is up for grabs.

At today's Electoral Matters meeting at Salford City Council, councillors heard that, despite 'complex challenges', as yet there's been 'no confirmation of any delay', and that the elections are expected to go ahead, with little having been put in place.

A heated Salford Council planning meeting this morning eventually passed permission for 127 houses on the Pendleton site right next to the M602, with councillors having concerns over affordable housing, air quality and food potentially gown on a newly created allotment..."I wouldn't eat anything grown there" said Councillor Bob Clarke, who works on motorways for his day job.

Meanwhile, a row has blown up over areas designated green space in the city's Local Plan that have been removed from its first phase.

CRESCENT POLICE HQ 'SCANDAL OF THE DECADE' SET TO BE POSTPONED

A court case set for March between Salford Council and Stama Developments, surrounding planning refusal for the old Police HQ on the Crescent, looks set to be postponed, after a decision published by the Council states that it is "Applying to vacate a High Court hearing for a period of 6 months" for "further discussions and negotiations".

The refusal to grant planning permission to Stama was dubbed the 'local government scandal of the decade' by former Labour councillor Stephen Ord.

Meanwhile, the Council will decide planning permission this week for 127 new properties around Amersham Street, opposite Lark Hill Primary School, that will include just 17 affordable properties, as Salford Council's 'dilution' of poor people in Pendleton continues.

At this afternoon's Greater Manchester Leaders' press conference, it was revealed that there had been 1,131 reports of COVID-19 legislation breaches to Greater Manchester Police, with just under half of them relating to house parties and large gatherings.

It was also reported that there were 175 complaints about workplaces not complying, with a new email address launched for people to complain about workplace safety.

FREEZING SALFORD TENANTS STUCK IN PENDLETON BLOCKS

Tenants in Pendleton blocks owned by Salford City Council and managed by Pendleton Together, having suffered with dangerous cladding wrapped around their homes, are now suffering with the cold as the insulation has been ripped off.

"I'd say it was 65% colder, it's freezing and it's ridiculous" says Cath Wood of Salix Court, who is desperate for a move "My daughter came home for six days at Christmas and it cost me nearly £90 to heat the place."

Meanwhile, as thousands of vaccinations have been given in Salford, NHS England has told the city to cancel 924 second dose Pfizer appointments, despite the vaccine having an expiry date this Wednesday. SALFORD HAS 191 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS RATE DOUBLES SINCE BOXING DAY

MESSAGES FOR FRONTLINE RE-LAUNCHES

Salford has 191 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 188, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 410.7, up from 403.3. Salford's seven day rate has more than doubled since Boxing Day. There have been four new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, the 0161 Community Media Team is re-launching its message for frontline, asking people to video messages for front line staff in all sectors working through the pandemic.

Salford has 188 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 277, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 403.3, up from 363.2. There have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Northern Care Alliance, which includes Salford Royal NHS Trust, is looking to recruit registered healthcare professionals for the COVID-19 vaccination roll out programme..."The successful applicants must be able to work well under pressure" states the call-out.

Salford has 277 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 154, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 363.2, up from 333. However some areas in Salford, including Langworthy Buile Hill, and Ordsall and Salford Quays have seen rates over 500.

Meanwhile, a community row has broken out in Broughton over schools opening, definitions of 'vulnerable children' and shops opening via the 'back door', with the Salford Deputy Mayor involved and the police.

NEW GREATER MANCHESTER SURVEY SHOWS LEVEL OF COVID ANXIETY

Salford has 154 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 131, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 333, up from 298.3. Indeed all boroughs of Greater Manchester, except Bolton, now have rates above 300 with two boroughs, Wigan and Trafford, above 400.

There have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital, which according to the latest data has the highest number of COVID patients since the November peak and more than the April peak. A Greater Manchester survey shows the high level of anxiety amongst residents, with Salford people more likely than any other GM residents to not understand the restrictions in place.

DOMESTIC ABUSE CHARITIES PROVIDE INCREASED HELP DURING LOCKDOWN

Victims of domestic abuse in Salford are being reminded that support is available during the lockdown, with more counselling and staff provided to cope with demand.

"We know for some victims the pandemic has meant spending more time at home with their potential abuser" says Greater Manchester Deputy Mayor, Beverley Hughes "Our message to victims of domestic abuse is 'You are not alone, and support is still here if you need it...If home isn't a safe place, you are allowed to leave...to escape risk of harm'."

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, re-launched a GM Tech Fund yesterday as he revealed that up to 20,000 young people in the region have no access to a tech device or data to do online education work.

VIRUS INCREASING BY 70% PER WEEK

Greater Manchester Health Lead, Richard Leese, said this afternoon that there is a "real risk" of the region's hospital system "falling over" in the next couple of weeks, that could see patients 'stuck in ambulances and stuck on trolleys'.

Leese cited a 70% increase per week in the prevalence of the virus in Greater Manchester as he slated "stupid and selfish" people whose behaviour is "putting lives at risk". Greater Manchester police officers attended over 1,000 house parties which broke regulations over New Year .

Salford has 154 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 67, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 251.9, up from 228.7. There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Salford has now joined the national lockdown, as schools close and the 'stay at home' message goes out... "It's been both frustrating and alarming to see the speed with which the new variant is spreading" said Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
