DISABLED PEOPLE FURY AT CONSERVATIVE PARTY CONFERENCE

"You are responsible for mass suffering and mass deaths and we will not let you forget it..."

This afternoon, Disabled People Against Cuts held its protest outside the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, with each speaker telling personal stories of suffering and neglect by the system.

Also protesting this morning on an array of issues were a badger, a tree, a white elephant and silent Quakers.

On Sunday 29th September there are two protests against the Tory Party, which is holding its annual conference in Manchester. The People's Assembly demo starts at noon from Oxford Road in Manchester, while a March For Europe Defend Democracy march starts at 2pm from Whitworth Park.

SALFORD STAR AND BODDAN LODGE FEATURED AT FOUR DAY MANCHESTER FESTIVAL

Deathstar Supernova, a short film about the desperate fight to save the Salford Star, is to be premiered on Tuesday 1st October at a four day Shut Down The Tories Festival to be held in a marquee in Piccadilly Gardens, which runs in parallel with the protests around the Tory Party Conference.

Also being premiered at the Festival on Saturday 28th September is a film centred around the successful fight to save Boddan Lodge Over 60s Club in Monton.

TRUE HORROR OF FIRE RISKS IN SALFORD PENDLETON BLOCKS REVEALED

RISK TO PROPERTY: SUBSTANTIAL – RISK TO LIFE: MODERATE!

The true horror of living in some of the nine Pendleton blocks with dangerous cladding has been revealed in fire risk assessments revealed recently by Salford City Council in a Freedom of Information response to a tenant.

Never mind the cladding, which a fire assessment stated in 2017, should be removed 'immediately', there were a whole host of other potentially lethal fire hazards which plagued the flats.

NEW £10MILLION INTERMEDIATE CARE CENTRE FOR SALFORD CITY COUNCIL

NEW CARE CENTRE IN SALFORD ROYAL HOSPITAL CAR PARK

Salford City Council's Cabinet is expected to approve a proposal today to build a new £10million Bevan Intermediate Care Unit in the existing car park of Salford Royal Hospital on Stott Lane, although only seven parking spaces are set to be lost.

Once built, the Council will lease the Unit to Salford Royal Hospital Trust which will cover the cost of borrowing and interest over 25 years.

'WE NEED A MINISTRY FOR THE HOMELESS...'

Homeless people in Salford who were due to be given flu jabs next week have been denied the opportunity, unless they are aged over 65...even though their average life expectancy is 43.

"It's a key issue and a crazy situation" says Alec McFadden of the SUCRC Breakfast Club "We need a kind of Ministry for the Homeless so that their health and wellbeing are a priority, because their life expectancy is less than anyone else on the planet."

CASTLE IRWELL BOOK WINS FRANK MULLINEUX PRIZE

Rachael Reader's book, Castle Irwell: A Meander Through Time, has won this year's prestigious Frank Mullineux Local History Award, which was presented by Ceremonial Mayor, Charlie McIntyre, at last weekend's Salford Histories Festival.

The Festival which took place in Walkden this year, attracted loads of people viewing around thirty stalls and attending talks.

In 1969, seven thousand protesters marched against the apartheid regime in South Africa and the all-white Springboks rugby union team which was due to play a North West Counties team in what was the largest demo in Britain against the tour. Fifty years on there's a workshop at the Working Class Movement Library featuring a dozen people who were present.

SALFORD JOINS GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE AS THOUSANDS MARCH IN MANCHESTER

Over one hundred people, including pupils from three Salford schools, joined trade unions, councillors, the Salford MP and activists in a Climate Strike rally outside Swinton Civic Centre this afternoon.

Meanwhile thousands of mainly young people held a rally and marched through Manchester to mark the global climate day of action.

The Independent Councillor for Irlam, Darren Goulden, slammed the Lead Member for Planning, Councillor Derek Antrobus, at yesterday's full meeting of Salford City Council over development plans for Chat Moss.

Goulden called Antrobus "utterly contemptuous", while Antrobus and the City Mayor, Paul Dennett, hit back, arguing that any withdrawal of plans to build 1,600 houses on the Moss would be "catastrophic".

ELDERLY PEOPLE POWER FORCES SALFORD COUNCIL TO DO U-TURN ON BODDAN LODGE CLOSURE

After a petition signed by thousands of people, plus a big protest outside the Civic Centre, Salford Council has announced a U-turn in its plans to axe the lease for Boddan Lodge Over 60s Club in Monton by the end of this year.

The Council has now extended the lease by three years, after which the Club is expected to be self-sufficient..."We are extremely pleased we've got this extension to remain" says Roy Zammit, Club Chair.

LOW PAID SECURITY STAFF VOTE TO STRIKE

Staff employed by private contractor Engie Services Ltd within Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust have unanimously voted to take strike action over their employer's failure to pay NHS rates.

Some staff are paid only the minimum wage rate of £8.21 an hour, while the lowest NHS rate is £9.03 per hour, an equivalent difference of £1,500 a year for full time staff..."They support us every day and night" says A&E health care assistant Ariel Luszcz "We must now support them in their fight for fair pay."

GM FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE CONSULTATION GIVES THUMBS DOWN TO CUTS

Proposals for £12.8million cuts to the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, including reductions of fire engines, crew numbers and fire stations, have received a resounding thumbs down in the published consultation results.

Well over one thousand comments were received from the public, staff, trade unions and community organisations – but the apathy of councillors was astounding, with 378 out of 637 elected members across the region not even bothering to open the consultation email.

As the Cycling Tour of Britain rode through Salford this afternoon, anti-fracking demonstrators waved a 'Frack Off' flag in protest at fracking company, Ineos, which holds the license for Barton Moss, sponsoring the UK cycling team.

"We're not here to protest against the race" explained John Catterall of Frack Free Salford. Other protests were held along routes in Altrincham and Manchester.

Following the recent announcement that Swinton Lions is to change its name to Manchester Lions, this afternoon, the Board of Directors has resigned, citing the "appalling" behaviour of a number of fans "including threats of violence towards Board members".

In the resignation letter the Board adds that "Opposition was fuelled by the actions of the Mayor of Salford and Councillors of Swinton and Pendlebury releasing a letter objecting to the Board's plan".

The Jerrold Manufacturing Pension Fund is proposing to build a huge eight storey block of 49 apartments with commercial space, but no affordable housing, thanks to the planning policies of Salford City Council.

The planning application for the site opposite Bexley Square on Chapel Street, which goes to the Council's Planning Panel next week, is in a mid-high value area where 'high density' apartment schemes are exempt from providing affordable properties.

SALFORD COUNCIL STAFF SET TO WALK OUT FOR CLIMATE STRIKE

On September 20th there's going to be a global Climate Strike, and, today, Salford Council has sent out a memo to all staff encouraging them to walk out on that day between noon and 12:30pm to halt 'business as usual', and to support action by trade union Salford City UNISON and young climate activists.

Any staff wanting to go on the big climate protest in Manchester in the afternoon can take unpaid leave 'subject to service needs being met'.

Ineos, which currently holds the license for fracking in Salford, sponsors the former Team SKY cycling team which will be taking part in Stage 8 of the Cycling Tour of Britain that hits Greater Manchester on 14th September.

Frack Free Greater Manchester will be holding protests throughout the day, as Salford City Council encourages people to cheer on the riders as they 'zoom past' its Big Day Out at the Civic Centre.

MO TO BE FORCED OUT WITH TWO WEEK ULTIMATUM

The long running battle between Salford Council and local Chapel Street Shalimar shop owner, Mo, has taken a nasty turn with an offer of just £25,000 compensation to get out, for the business which has served the community for over 35 years.

The Council told Mo in a meeting this week that if he doesn't leave within two weeks, the offer goes down to just £15,000. No alternative shop has been offered in the new English Cities Fund developments which have had £8million in subsidies.

FAN FURY AS SWINTON CHANGE NAME TO MANCHESTER LIONS

Swinton Lions, founded in 1866, is to change its name to Manchester Lions RLFC, in order to give the rugby club the "best chance of survival" and to "save it from extinction", the Board states...

Meanwhile, a new group called The Real Swinton Rugby League has issued a statement that some third and fourth generation Swinton fans will be "relinquishing our support as our club will no longer exist and will be replaced by a pipe dream called Manchester". The group is seeking to form its own club "to preserve the Swinton name".

SALFORD CITY COUNCIL COULD SELL PRIME GREENGATE LAND FOR JUST £77,000

COUNCIL COULD SELL LAND CHEAP TO RENAKER FOR 164 PROPERTIES

Salford Council will next week decide whether to sell prime Greengate land near Collier Baths exclusively to developer Renaker for building 164 residential units. According to a Council report, the two pieces of land are valued at just £77,000, in a complicated deal.

Meanwhile, another developer, Hong Kong-based One Heritage, has announced a public consultation on plans to build a 55 storey tower in Greengate.

LATEST SALFORD SAVING PEOPLE SHELTER OPEN

The recently closed Unicorn pub in Eccles has become the latest building to be occupied as a Saving People Shelter, providing a roof for around a dozen homeless people.

The shelter has been operating for about a month, providing sanctuary for people who have fallen through the welfare net, including those with mental health problems, benefit sanctions and some who cannot claim benefits.

MIDLAND HOTEL OCCUPIED AFTER STOP BORIS JOHNSON RALLY

Last night, the Midland Hotel in Manchester was occupied for a short time after the Stop Boris Johnson rally near the Peterloo Monument, with campaigners requesting the cancellation of the Tory Party booking for its conference on 29th September.

"I asked if they refused entry to warmongers, trouble makers and other unsavoury characters" said Penny from Manchester People's Assembly, who had earlier spoken at the rally insisting "This is both a Leave and Remain rally, and I think it's really important that we are all united against what the Tories are doing..."

MORE DIE-INS, CLIMATE PROTESTS AT BARCLAYS AND OUTSIDE COURT AS NORTHERN REBELLION DRAWS TO CLOSE

Today, the four day Northern Rebellion draws to a close with Extinction Rebellion supporters gluing themselves to Barclays Bank in Manchester, plus more die-ins, processions and actions.

Meanwhile, Rising Up! Manchester Families is to protest at the Greater Manchester Pension Fund, calling on it to divest £2billion from fossil fuels within two years and to invest in local climate solutions instead.

BATTLE TO STOP NO DEAL ISN'T A STRUGGLE BETWEEN THOSE WHO WANT TO LEAVE EU AND THOSE WHO DON'T, CORBYN WILL SAY

Today, Labour Party Leader, Jeremy Corbyn, is due to make a major speech at a rally in Salford, in which he will say that "The battle to stop No Deal isn't a struggle between those who want to leave the EU and those who want continued membership...It's a battle of the many against the few who are hijacking the referendum result to shift even more power and wealth towards those at the top."

He will also promise a huge shift of wealth and resources towards the North and "change in whose interests the economy works".

EXTINCTION REBELLION YOUTH DIE-IN AT ARNDALE TO HIGHLIGHT FASHION INDUSTRY WASTE

This afternoon, around fifty members of Extinction Rebellion Youth, age between ten and 22, took part in a die-in at Manchester Arndale to highlight the lack of sustainability in the fashion industry.

"The Manchester Arndale was selected for this action because of the role it plays in the fashion industry's contribution to the climate emergency and ecological breakdown" explained Jade, one of the protesters.

200 YEARS SINCE THOMAS PAINE BONES DISAPPEARED VIA SALFORD

It's two hundred years since the bones of radical 'Rights Of Man' political theorist Thomas Paine were brought to Salford, only to be refused entry to Manchester by the authorities, with the horrors of Peterloo still fresh...And then the bones disappeared.

Throughout September, October and November there's going to be happenings to commemorate the weird event co-hosted by the Working Class Movement Library and Walk The Plank.
