HOSPITAL SECURITY GUARDS SET FOR THREE DAYS OF INDUSTRIAL ACTION

Low paid security staff at Salford Royal Hospital are set to take three days of industrial action from 6th November, after their outsourced employer, Engie, backtracked on a pay deal that averted a strike in October.

"This incredibly dedicated group of Salford security staff was forced to vote for strike action by an employer that stubbornly refused to deal with this issue" explained Amy Barringer, UNISON North West regional organiser.

This morning picket lines were set up outside Salford City College sites for the first day of six strikes, as management refuses to implement a nationally agreed deal on a cost of living pay increase.

"They just said they were not interested in comprise but we're not asking for the earth" said Mark Sullivan NEU rep for the College "This is about principles...we need to make a stand now."

SALFORD BOOKIE BUYS OLD RACECOURSE SITE

Salford bookie and latter day controversial developer, Fred Done, has bought the Castle Irwell site which has planning permission for five hundred non-affordable houses, a school and retail outlets.

The site was previously the home of Manchester Racecourse before being owned and used by the University of Salford for student accommodation. Now Done has set up the company Castle Irwell Limited for the 'buying and selling of own real estate'.

THE BUTCHER, THE CAFE AND THE BEAUTY MAKER LEAVE IN MARKET CONTROVERSY

Within the next few weeks, the indoor market at Salford Shopping Centre is to close with a new space opening up within the Precinct itself for around a dozen new units. But the move has brought controversy, with the butcher, the cafe and the beauty studio closing, as traders who have served the community for over seventy years between them shut down their businesses.

"I think I'm being forced into retirement" says butcher Dave Barratt "But nothing is hurting me more than having to walk away because I've served these people for forty years and they've been my life."

SALFORD HOUSING AFFORDABILITY CRISIS WRIT LARGE IN NEW COUNCIL REPORT

ONLY SEVEN SOCIAL RENT HOMES DELIVERED IN SALFORD LAST YEAR AS HOUSING WAITING LIST RISES

Salford City Council has produced a new report on affordable housing which shows that only 224 so-called 'affordable' homes were delivered in the city last year, of which only 3%, or seven homes, were truly affordable via social rent.

Meanwhile, the housing waiting list rose by 5%; the number of families living in temporary accommodation rose; there was an average 51 bids for every affordable home advertised in the city; and increases in average private sector rents, together with declining affordability for anyone wanting to buy a home in the city.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST, LACK OF CONSULTATION AND 'WALL OF SILENCE' FROM MAYOR

Pendlebury resident Paul Brighouse, who runs the Stop the A666 Bus Lane Madness Facebook group, has written an open letter to Salford City Council's Growth and Prosperity Scrutiny Panel asking for the decision to go ahead with the A666 bus lane to be called in.

Paul Brighouse cites eleven reasons why he believes the decision was dodgy, including the lack of public consultation, that 'information against the officer views were not presented to the Panel', a conflict of interest, and a 'wall of silence' from the City Mayor, councillors and officers.

A new report out today by the National Audit Office states that local councils could have to spend a fortune on policing and appeals during any fracking process, never mind the environmental risks – for gas that won't be any cheaper than current bills.

SALFORD CITY COLLEGE STAFF TO STRIKE FOR SIX DAYS OVER REFUSAL TO IMPLEMENT NATIONAL PAY AND CONDITIONS

93% OF SALFORD COLLEGE UNION MEMBERS VOTE TO STRIKE FROM 30TH OCTOBER

Staff at Salford City College have voted to strike for six days beginning 30th October over the College's refusal to implement a national pay and conditions agreement which itself was below the rate of inflation, after a 93.3% vote in favour by National Education Union members. Staff will strike on October 30th, then November 12th,13th,19th, 20th and 21st.

While staff are being denied a pay increase, the Principal trousered £143,000 in pay last year, while the College has 'unrestrictive reserves' of over £16million.

SALFORD COUNCIL PREPARES TO HAND GREENGATE GARDEN TO COMMUNITY FOR 12 MONTHS

With councillors and the community having stopped the £250,000 sale of the forest garden on East Philip Street in Greengate to Urban Splash last March, Salford City Council is now formally proposing to hand over the land for community use for twelve months while it 'reviews the future use of the site'.

The garden, part of the failed Biospheric Project, has been the subject of clean-ups and clearance by the community, and the proposal is set to enable groups to develop plans for the site.

ECCLES 'CISTERN CHAPEL' GOES DOWN THE PAN

The superloo in Eccles, which won a Salford Star Award for its maintenance payments of over £500 per week, has been axed by Salford City Council to save a whopping £20,000 a year.

The toilet, installed at a reputed cost of £100,000 in 2004, had its contract ended in March and remains 'closed', signalling the end of all public conveniences in Salford.

Residents who have been campaigning for years against any proposed sale of the Moss, which is part of Blackleach Country Park, say they are "shocked and disgusted" at the decision, have asked councillors to call it in and may go for a Judicial Review..

SALFORD COUNCIL SLAMMED AS AUTISTIC WOMAN LEFT WITHOUT PROPER SUPPORT

The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman has slammed Salford Council after it was found that a woman with autism was "left without proper support" after it failed to review her care plan for more than five years.

The Ombudsman also found that the Council had not adhered "to the most fundamental parts of the Care and Support Statutory Guidance". The Council agreed to pay the woman £1,200 for 'distress' and the 'time and trouble of bringing the complaint'.

TRADE UNION CALLS FOR ENVIRONMENT IMPACT ASSESSMENT ON ALL SALFORD COUNCIL DECISIONS

Salford City UNISON Branch Secretary Steve North has called for a halt to the sale of Hill Top Moss in Walkden for housing as it would be a "backwards step following the City Council's recent declaration of a Climate Emergency".

In an open letter to Planning Lead Derek Antrobus and City Mayor Paul Dennett, Steve North expressed "concern and disappointment" at the proposed sale of land within Blackleach Country Park, due to be decided today, and called for a full Environment Impact Assessment on all Salford Council decisions.

PENDLETON TOGETHER OPERATING LTD MAKES £22MILLION LOSS AS DIRECTORS REFUSE TO CONFIRM IT'S A 'GOING CONCERN'

According to the latest accounts for Pendleton Together Operating Limited (PTOL) which were signed off just over two weeks ago, the £28million cost of replacing dangerous Grenfell style cladding and 'further works' on the nine blocks owned by Salford City Council has still not been made available by its shareholders. The company adds that if the funding doesn't come through it "will have to source alternative funding elsewhere or it would have to cease trading..."

Meanwhile, PTOL made a £22million loss, and costs for all the works on the blocks, including the cladding and "construction related defects", are set to hit an estimated £32.5million.

Salford City Council is about to spend around £2.5million on replacing 2,125 laptops for staff, including around £250,000 to replace IT hardware that Capita is keeping when Urban Vision reverts back to the Council in February 2020.

"Failure to invest in systems in accordance with advice is false economy, and the business of the Council must not be put at risk of cyber-attacks" states a Council report.

A controversial plan to sell land known as Hill Top Moss in Walkden, that falls within the boundary of Blackleach Country Park, is expected to be rubber stamped by Salford City Council next week, after protests dating back over five years.

The deal, which has been struck behind the back of the local community, includes delivery of 79 houses and improvements to Walkden Cricket Club, although the Council report states that there are "no positive contractual obligations on the developer to develop the housing land or complete the cricket club works"...

As Government figures revealed this week that there were 726 homeless deaths last year, with one seventh in the North West, the Salford Unemployed and Community Resource Centre (SUCRC) has slammed the "national disgrace", particularly after 15 homeless people were evicted from a doctor's surgery in Eccles in May that still remains empty....

"This type of action puts their lives at risk and the rights and lives of our homeless must come before the value of property" says Alec McFadden of SUCRC.

SIX FIRE ENGINES CUT FROM ACROSS GREATER MANCHESTER AND SALFORD

CUTS BITE AS ECCLES LOSES ITS SECOND FIRE ENGINE

Six fire engines from across Greater Manchester, including Eccles, have been taken out of service today. Last week, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority approved the cut, promising "a comprehensive programme of communications and engagement activity across GMFRS [Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service]"

Crews are furious that this hasn't happened... "The first they knew about it was this morning" a firefighter told the Salford Star, adding that it was "totally unacceptable."

DEVELOPERS OFFER PLANNING FEE PEANUTS FOR SALFORD APARTMENT BLOCKS

DEVELOPER OFFERS JUST £9,000 FOR WEASTE BLOCK, AS ANOTHER SEEKS TO AVOID £650,000 IN CHARLESTOWN

The Salford City Council planning panel will consider three applications tomorrow for housing, with developers offering peanuts in fees, no affordable housing and secret deals.

On the site of the old Vita works on Seaford Road, the developer is offering just £150,000 in planning obligations when it should be paying at least £807,000; and even Council planning officers are recommending rejection of this.

Yet on Eccles New Road, with the approval of officers, a developer is being asked for just £9,000 plus a 'clawback' for 140 housing units and a six storey office block. There's also a huge 23 storey apartment block proposed by English Cities Fund, off Trinity Way, with no details disclosed.

SALFORD COUNCIL PENDLETON BLOCKS CLADDING REMOVAL DELAYED AGAIN

CLADDING TO STAY ON BLOCKS UNTIL NEXT YEAR AT LEAST

In response to questions raised by a Pendleton Together tenant about the dangerous Grenfell-style cladding left on eight blocks owned by Salford City Council, it has been confirmed that "no programme for the cladding removal is available", although it could "begin" next year.
