`We want an MP who is courageous, bold and loyal. We don't want a careerist. We want someone who cares and who will stand up for Salford...You have had 12 years to prove that you have these qualities and we think you have been found lacking'

Which road will Hazel Blears take? Following a vote at the Hazel Must Go! public meeting last month, it was decided to give Hazel until October 31st to stand down as the Labour candidate or face a Hazel Must Go! candidate at next year's General Election.

Last Friday the Campaign's David Henry delivered an open letter to her office at the Working Class Movement Library on The Crescent inviting her to reply to assertions that she is no longer fit to represent Salford as its MP. And to let Salford know whether she intends to resign or not.

The end for Salix Homes?

Despite zillions of pounds of public money being poured into Salford's regeneration over the last decade…and despite 15,000 Salford council houses being given away to City West Housing recently, the percentage of council-owned homes in the city that don't meet the Government's decency standard has increased…

Salford Council's own definition of `decent' is "Warm, weatherproof and having reasonably modern facilities". And nearly 55% of council owned houses in the city don't meet this standard.

SALFORD CITY FIRE

FIRE DESTROYS SALFORD CITY CLUBHOUSE

A fire early on Sunday morning has destroyed Salford City's clubhouse which, together with its revenue earning bar, housed lots of photos, opposing team pennants and mementos from the Ammies history.

"The Fire Service believes the blaze was started deliberately in waste bins which were adjacent to the clubhouse" says Salford City spokesman Frank McCauley "A major source of income on match days, the club committee are meeting this week to discuss how best to replace the building, which has been used by the football club for twenty years but which will now need to be demolished."

Salford's only big football club is now asking any local individuals or companies who can be of any assistance to make contact with chairman Darren Quick on 07779 656388.

So come on Mr Merry, get on the phone now…

SALFORD RIVERSIDE DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 2nd October 2009

SOLD DOWN THE RIVER!

As Salford's housing waiting list hits almost 20,000, we're sure all those people will be pleased to hear that, rather than refurbishing tinned up houses to meet the huge demand, the Council and NDC (Now Demolishing a City) continue to knock them down.

The latest to be bulldozed are 184 terraces, off Littleton Road in Lower Kersal, right by the picturesque banks of the River Irwell. The Salford Star has maintained since our first issue that the only reason these houses were due to be demolished in the first place was their sexy setting for developers...given that identical houses further up Littleton Road but set back from the River (and not sexy for developers) were done up rather than demolished.

SALFORD CITY FA CUP

Star date: 2nd October 2009

HYDE UNITED BACK ON…

Following Hyde United’s reprieve from going bust, our FA Cup tie against them now goes ahead next Tuesday October 6th at Hyde’s ground, kick off 7:45pm. The winners play those famous FA Cup giant killers, Blyth Spartans in the next round. Meanwhile, the Ammies play our favourite team, Garforth Town at Moor Lane tomorrow, 3pm kick off.

Salford City has signed another four new players, three of whom impressed in the late 3-2 defeat at league leaders Colwyn Bay last Tuesday...Craig Mahon, ex Accrington Stanley and Ireland under 19 international, Domaine Rouse and Carlos Edmonson Rouse, both former Bury players, and John McAliskey, a 6ft 4" striker who's played for Mansfield and Huddersfield Town. City obviously couldn't persuade Michael Owen, who was spotted at Moor Lane this week, to sign up...But who needs him anyway when you've got Craig  Mahon???

Now Salford City should surely get that elusive first home league win of the season...
