"This is the moment of maximum danger, it is critical that we follow the advice now" he said "If there's one thing that should motivate people to stay in tonight...it's thinking about people who are out there working in the NHS...it's a selfish thing to do to put extra pressure on those people."

CATH FITZSIMMONS RECOGNISED IN NEW YEAR'S HONOURS FOR SERVICES TO NURSING

With over forty years' service in the NHS including Macmillan Nurse Consultant in Breast Services and Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse, Catherine Fitzsimmons has been rewarded in the New Year's Honours List with a BEM, or British Empire Medal.

Cath was the first nurse to come out of retirement during the pandemic to return to the wards of Salford Royal Hospital as part of the palliative care team, providing clinical supervision, and says "I share this with each and every one of my extraordinary colleagues"...

SALFORD HAS 73 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS CITY GOES INTO TIER 4

SALFORD IN TIER 4 DESPITE DECREASE IN INFECTION RATES

Salford has 73 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 105, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 197, down from 224.1. Despite this, and every borough in Greater Manchester bar one, showing a decrease in rates and cases, the Government has put the region into Tier 4 'stay at home' restrictions.

Meanwhile, teachers' union, the NEU, has pronounced itself "astonished" by the announcement by Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson, on school returns.

GOVERNMENT MOVES GREATER MANCHESTER INTO TIER 4 – DESPITE NO HUGE RISE IN CASES

The Government this afternoon announced that from one minute past midnight tomorrow, 31st December, Salford and Greater Manchester are to be moved into Tier 4 with 'stay at home' restrictions. The move was not expected as the region's virus cases are below the national average.

NEW SEND FREE SCHOOL TO BE CREATED IN WEASTE

Despite apparently being against free schools in principle, Salford City Council has successfully bid for a new fifty place free school for 11 to 16 year olds with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The school, to be run by Kings Academy Trust, is to be sited on Kintyre Avenue in Weaste, rather than on the site of the former St Luke's Primary School which is now set for housing.

SALFORD HAS 105 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES BUT CITY IS EXPECTED TO STAY IN TIER 3

SALFORD SEES RISE IN DAILY CASES BUT 7 DAY AVERAGE DECREASES

Salford has 105 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 70, but the seven day rate per 100,000 population has decreased slightly, from 224.5 to 224.1. There have been four new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Salford's daily cases are still relatively small compared to places in the South where daily positive tests have reached over 800. Greater Manchester is expected to stay in Tier 3 today when the Government announces changes to the tiering system.

RATES IN MOST GREATER MANCHESTER BOROUGHS RISE BUT NOT AS FAST AS ELSEWHERE

Salford has 43 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 44, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 209.4, up from 206.7. The relatively low daily figure might be the result of festive testing as a total of just 14 lateral flow tests were carried out on Boxing Day and Christmas Day.

There have been three new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital, bringing the total to 450 since the start of the pandemic, with a rate of 173.9 per 100,000 population, 14th highest in the country.

A new interactive Government map of infections across Salford shows Kersal Dale with the highest rates in the city and Little Hulton South, Swinton Newtown and Higher Irlam with the lowest rates in the city.

CRESCENT POLICE HQ 'SCANDAL' GETS COURT DATE

A refusal by Salford City Council to grant planning permission to Stama Developments (Salford) Ltd, which former Labour councillor Stephen Ord dubbed the "Local government scandal of the decade", is due to be heard at the Civil Justice Centre in March 2021.

The planning application referred to the old Police HQ on the Crescent, which Stama wanted to convert into flats and houses but permission was refused... "There is a multi-million pound lawsuit being compiled as I speak" Ord told a full Council meeting in 2019 "and there is no doubt in my mind that criminal offences have been committed."

Anyone arriving in Salford or Greater Manchester from any Tier 4 area or Wales, or who has arrived since 19th December, are being asked to self-isolate for at least ten days – and no visitors should be allowed in that house at all, even on Christmas Day.

"The new strain of Covid, which is increasingly rapidly in Tier 4 areas, is extremely worrying" says Dr Jeanelle de Gruchy, Director of Public Health Tameside.

GRADE II LISTED 'WONDER OF THE AGE' BARTON LANE AQUEDUCT PORTAL

Historic England has named the Barton Lane Aqueduct Portal, Grade II listed this year, as one of the most captivating sites in the North West, calling it "a marvel of engineering".

The Aqueduct was originally built by James Brindley in 1761 to carry the Bridgewater Canal over the River Irwell and the arch itself dates from the 1820s improvements, being reconstructed by Eccles Corporation in 1894, which wanted to preserve heritage. Meanwhile, the Government has explained its decision to keep Greater Manchester in Tier 3, arguing that even in boroughs where case rates are lowest, they "are now plateauing or increasing". There has still been no comment from the Salford City Mayor or local MPs on the announcement.

Salford has 72 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 58, as the seven day rate per 100,000 population rose from 138.7 to145.7 – but still below the national average. There have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

At yesterday's GM Leaders press conference, GM Health Lead, Richard Leese, attributed the recent rise in infections in Manchester and Salford to lateral flow tests of students, which has added to a 2% increase. This morning the Government is due to announce any changes to tier restrictions in Salford and Greater Manchester.

SALFORD HAS 58 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS 1,739 PUPILS OFF SCHOOL LAST WEEK VIA COVID-19

OVER 1,000 SALFORD SECONDARY SCHOOL PUPILS AND OVER 700 PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS ABSENT LAST WEEK

Salford has 58 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 50, as the overall fall in infections levels off. The seven day rate per 100,000 population rose from 134.1 to 138.7. There have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital, although the numbers of COVID-19 patients has fallen.

Meanwhile, new statistics published by the Office for National Statistics show that almost 10% (1,038) of secondary school pupils and 3.6% (701) of primary school pupils were unable to attend last week because of COVID-19. Today, the Government will announce any changes to the Salford tier restrictions.

Salford has 50 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 62, as the seven day rate per 100,000 population fell from 135.6 to 134.1. A new Government age heat map for Salford shows the highest seven day rates are amongst those aged 85-89, with a rate of 453.8.

In Greater Manchester, all boroughs are showing a slight increase in cases and rates, apart from Bury. There have been four new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital. Meanwhile, Clarendon Leisure Centre has closed to the public to become a vaccination centre.

Buyers of 33 new townhouses at Valette Square with prices ranging up to almost half a million pounds are being subsidised by the Government, via Help To Buy, with free fees and interest for five years on equity loans, and free stamp duty.

The developer, English Cities Fund, which is a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal and General and Homes England, has already had all Section 106 payments waived by Salford City Council in favour of the controversial Development Trust Account...

A huge new walk-in twelve hour COVID-19 testing centre has been erected in Swinton on the site of the old Ambrose Barlow High School, right next to housing, with angry residents given no notification by Salford City Council.

The residents argue that light and noise pollution, no parking facilities and a busy road mean that it should not have been put there, particularly when there are half empty industrial sites nearby..."It's already ruining our lives" says Julie Harper, who lives opposite the centre.

However, the seven day average of cases has increased slightly from 349 to 351, as has the seven day rate per 100,000 population which rose from 134.8 to 135.6. For the first time in a while, there have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Today, GPs begin to roll out the vaccination programme from ten 'hubs' in the city, with the NHS Director of Primary Care urging people to have the jab when invited.

NORTH WEST CLUBS DONATE SIGNED SHIRTS FOR SALFORD VETERAN CARE VILLAGE

Signed footy shirts from loads of North West clubs including Salford City, Everton, Man City and United are being auctioned to raise funds for Broughton House Veteran Care Village, the Salford home for ex-servicemen and women.

The auction runs until Thursday 17th December, and includes a poppy shirt signed by Marcus Rashford.

SALFORD HAS 71 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS SCHOOL CHILDREN INFECTIONS RISE

SALFORD INFECTIONS BEGIN TO CREEP UP

Salford has 71 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 49, as the seven day rate per 100,000 population rose slightly from 133.7 to 134.8. Salford, however, still has one of the lowest rates of infection in Greater Manchester. There have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, infections amongst school age pupils and their parents are rising, according to the latest survey from the Office for National Statistics, with the teachers' union, NEU, calling for mass testing in schools, including primaries, across the country, not just in the South East.

SALFORD HAS 49 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS HIGHEST AND LOWEST RATES IN THE CITY REVEALED

WALKDEN AND UNIVERSITY AREA HAVE LOWEST RATES IN SALFORD

Salford has 49 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 64, as the seven day rate per 100,000 population rose slightly from 130.6 to 133.7. Elsewhere in Greater Manchester, all boroughs, except Rochdale and Tameside, have seen slight rises in infections. There have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile the new interactive Government map of infections shows the fewest virus rates in the city centred around Walkden, Little Hulton and the Lower Broughton Salford University area, while the highest rates are in Broughton Park, Patricroft and Peel Green.

Salford has 64 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 59, as the seven day rate per 100,000 population fell again from 135.6 to 130.6. There have been four new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, next week the Government revises its tiering system, and yesterday Greater Manchester Leaders set out their case for all of the city region's boroughs to be placed in Tier 2. Or failing that, for the southern half of the region, including Salford, to be in Tier 2.

GREATER MANCHESTER MAYOR APOLOGISES FOR HUGE GMP FAILINGS

80,100 CRIMES REPORTED TO GMP WENT UNRECORDED

A scathing report on Greater Manchester Police was issued today by the HMICFRS Inspectorate of Constabulary, which concluded that over 80,100 crimes reported to the force went unrecorded during the period covered by the inspection.

"The position is worse when it comes to recording violence against the person, where more than one in four crimes are not being recorded" the report added. This afternoon Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, apologised on behalf of the GMP but ducked questions on whether the Chief Constable should resign.

GM MAYOR ANDY BURNHAM PROPOSES COUNCIL TAX FREEZE ON MAYORAL COSTS

BURNHAM TO FREEZE COUNCIL TAX ADD-ONS WHILE KEEPING FIRE SERVICE AT SAME LEVEL

Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, perhaps with one eye on his re-election campaign, is proposing to freeze the Mayoral precept next financial year. The precept is a Council Tax add-on and is used to fund Greater Manchester wide services and the Mayor's costs.

Council Tax in Salford could rise by as much as 5% next year, and Burnham says that he doesn't "want to give our residents an extra headache". He is also proposing to keep the current level of Fire Service and extend A Bed Every Night into next year.

86 year old, Ted Jones, who has been a volunteer for eleven years at Salford Royal Hospital became the first person in the city to be vaccinated at the new hospital hub.

"I do feel a bit nervous but I am pleased that we have the vaccination here now" said Ted "I am just looking forward to being able to get back to normal and come back to work with the rest of the volunteers who I am really missing."
