Leigh Genesis - going for promotion in the Unibond First Division North, unbeaten in 20 million games, and without a goal scored against them in six and a half hours of football - nearly came a cropper at Salford City last night, as the Ammies hit three past them in a fantastic, pulsating, mud soaked, rain drenched, excitement studded second half…

Even with ex Blackburn Rovers and England contender, Matt Jansen, in their side, Leigh couldn't overcome the mighty Salford.

SALFORD YOUTH COUNCIL CONDEMNS DECISION ON SALFORD STAR FUNDING…

In response to Salford City Council banning the community from funding the Salford Star, Salford Youth Council last night passed an emergency motion condemning the decision - vowing to boycott the Council's Life In Salford magazine on the grounds that it is "unfairly biased" and produced at an "obscenely high cost"

Rachel Cavendish, co-chair of the Salford Youth Council, said that the denial of funding for the Salford Star… "has clearly been influenced by those who wish to censor freedom of speech… It is crucial young people stand up to this type of censorship and are made aware of the actions of the city council. This is a disgrace"

SALFORD COUNCIL BANS COMMUNITY FROM FUNDING SALFORD STAR… as freedom of speech goes out of the window.

Salford's community has been banned from financially supporting the Salford Star to get the magazine back into print.

Salford Council and its legal team has instructed representatives from the community who are responsible for handing out grants to community groups that they would be "breaking the law" if the Salford Star received any funding -  because it "tends to criticise authority, in particular singling out Salford Council and individual councillors"

SALFORD BRANCH OF FRIENDS OF THE EARTH LAUNCHES

Salford is getting its own branch of Friends of the Earth, with a public launch next Monday 29th March 7pm at the Queens Arms Hotel in Winton.

With Peel Holdings having submitted a planning application for 350 homes on its Burgess Farm site in Walkden, an incinerator being planned for Winton, and all sorts of trashing of green belt land on Chat Moss coming up, Salford is going to be an eco battleground.

The launch of Salford Friends of the Earth is well timed...

National Union of Journalists Accuse Police of `Outrageous Violation of Human Rights'…

Human rights campaigner Rhetta Moran - who appeared in issue 5 of Salford Star, accusing Salford Council of `trying to destroy me' - was arrested by a police snatch squad in Bolton last Saturday at the protest against the English Defence League's presence in the town.

According to Dave Toomer of the National Union of Journalists, whilst Rhetta was detained for ten hours by the police, her house keys were confiscated, her home was searched without a warrant and documents were copied from her computer…

SALFORD KIDS DISCOVER LEGOLAND

Children from Barton Moss Primary School in Eccles previewed the new Legoland Discovery Centre at the Trafford Centre last Friday and gave it the thumbs up.

The new attraction, which features a 4-D cinema, a laser shooting game and two million Lego bricks, opens tomorrow and is the first Legoland Discovery Centre in the UK.

Salix Homes, the arms length Salford Council company that manages social rent homes, spends almost £2million more on management fees than house repairs, a Council report has disclosed this week.

According to the last Salix accounts, the Chief Executive and three Executive Officers received £375,331 between them in `aggregate emoluments' in 2009. Meanwhile, almost 60% of Salix housing is officially projected not to meet the Government's decent housing standards this year…

COVENANT `COULD PREVENT STADIUM PLANS TAKING PLACE'

As Salford Council announces formal plans to form a joint venture company  with Peel Holdings to build the £26million Salford City Reds' rugby stadium, we can reveal that the ground is slap bang in the middle of land which has a covenant on it restricting its use to `public open space'.

A Salford Council report states that "part of the site is subject to a restrictive covenant which could prevent the proposed development taking place"…

AMERICAN TRIBUTE TO NEW ORDER HELPS SALFORD FOUNDATION

A new double CD tribute to New Order, featuring 32 cover versions of the top band's tracks by the likes of Detachments, John Ralston and Sunbears!, has been released by American label 24HourServiceStation.

The double CD, which features a spoken track by Peter Hook, is in memory of Factory Records guru Tony Wilson, and a portion of the proceeds will go to The Salford Foundation Trust's Tony Wilson Awards which helps creative local kids.

The ten minute comedy is sure to put the Colgate Factory on the map, before it becomes part of the new `Ordsall Waterfront' plan.

NON DECENT SALFORD HOMES

"1 in 3 homes in Salford are in poor condition" Audit Commission
 …and almost 12,000 homes contain `Category 1 Hazards'

Almost 29,000 houses in Salford, around a third of the city's total homes, are not decent to live in. Despite hundreds of millions of pounds of public `regeneration' money being poured into the city, thousands of Salford people are living in homes that don't meet the Government's own standards for decency - `warm, weatherproof and having reasonably modern facilities.'

A few years ago, the Council itself introduced a `Salford Standard' which rated above basic decency levels and, from statistics provided by Registered Social Landlords and the Council, no socially rented homes in the city currently either meet or are measured against this standard…

Over the next five weeks a Question Time type event comes to Salford Arts Theatre with a panel answering questions from the audience, like the tv version. The Salford Star is taking part in the first event, along with councillors from the main political parties, and the subject is housing and the environment.
