GOVERNMENT SAGE ADVISORS WARNINGS AS SALFORD PRIMARY SCHOOLS SET TO EXTEND OPENING

Salford has had no new confirmed cases of coronavirus, staying on 930, but this could be to do with delayed weekend reporting more than anything, and there have been no new deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile from tomorrow, June 1st, 33 Salford primary schools will begin wider opening amidst warnings from members of the Government's own SAGE advisors and the trade unions. Salford Council has stated that it is "supportive of parent choice at the current time"...

WIDER SCHOOL OPENING 'FLIES IN FACE' OF GOVERNMENT PROTECTION DUTY STATES UNION

Salford has seen just one new confirmed case of coronavirus bringing the total to 929, and there were no new deaths at Salford Royal Hospital. Meanwhile the debate rages on as to whether a wider school re-opening should begin from next Monday 1st June.

After hearing Boris Johnson's confirmation that schools are to begin, Dr Mary Bousted, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union, said that it "flies in the face" of the Government's duty to protect the community. And that schools are being used as a "distraction" from its 'disastrous strategy'.

This morning a huge banner reading 'Make the rich pay for Covid-19' complete with two effigies of Dominic Cummings and Richard Branson have been hung over a bridge in Salford. An anonymous note to the Salford Star stated that it is to reflect the anger of the people..."The rich and political elite are doing whatever they want and getting away with it..."

New Office for National Statistics figures released this morning show that sad coronavirus linked care home deaths in Salford are increasing by more than hospital deaths. And that 27.6% of all care home deaths in Salford are related to the virus. The Salford number of virus-linked care home deaths is the highest in Greater Manchester.

BUILE HILL ACADEMY STAFF MAKE 155 FREE FOOD PARCELS FOR PARENTS

Over thirty staff from Buile Hill Academy have made up free food parcels for 155 parents including ingredients and recipes to make everything from pasta to fruit crumble.

"As a school we care so much about our 'Buile Hill Family' whether they are in the building or not and want to do everything we can to support them during this unprecedented time" says Anna Simmons, Associate Assistant Headteacher at Buile Hill Academy.

SURVEY SHOWS 98% OF SALFORD UNISON MEMBERS IN SCHOOLS DO NOT BELIEVE 1ST JUNE OPENING IS SAFE

Salford has five new confirmed cases of coronavirus bringing the total to 917, with no new deaths announced at Salford Royal Hospital. Meanwhile, in a survey of its members in schools, Salford City UNISON found that 98% of respondents did not believe 1st June is a safe extended opening date. The union has launched a petition calling on Salford City Council to underline this.

Elsewhere, the controversial Church of Scientology has been putting pandemic help booklets in shops and businesses around Salford Precinct.

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Combined Authority has revealed the estimated £66.5million cost of the lockdown, including a 37% rise in black bin waste, sorting rough sleepers, procuring Personal Protection Equipment, setting up a temporary mortuary and Metrolink losses running at £1.33million per week. Meanwhile, both Salford City UNISON and the teachers union, the NEU, are demanding that measures be put in place before further school openings... "We are calling on Salford City Council...to declare openly and publicly that it will actively resist the further opening of any school" that doesn't meet its conditions, states UNISON.

END CHILD POVERTY COALITION FEARS 'PERILOUS FUTURE' AS SALFORD CREDIT UNION TRIES TO HELP

New figures from the End Child Poverty coalition show that almost one quarter of children in the city now live in poverty, an increase of 3.3%, and that the coronavirus crisis will leave growing numbers of families "facing the devastating effects". The coalition is demanding that the Government acts.

Meanwhile, the Salford Credit Union is trying to help people who are short of money during the pandemic by scrapping membership fees and allowing them up to three months to start repayments on loans.

New statistics from the Office for National Statistics show a further six sad coronavirus-related deaths in Salford care homes in the week of 8th May. There have now been 108 care home deaths from the virus in the city, plus 155 hospital deaths and 13 at home or in a hospice.

Salford City Council has written to parents, carers and guardians of school children stating that the Government's timetable for opening schools "may not be followed"...

"Headteachers, with the full support of the Local Authority, will only be welcoming the number of children back into their schools, that they deem to be safe" the letter explains, adding that openings will be "driven by a robust risk assessment process" and that "in our primary schools it is unlikely that children in the identified priority year groups will be able to attend school full time."

A YouGov survey commissioned by Your.MD has found that Britain is set to emerge unhealthier from lockdown, with four out of five people reporting an increase in harmful habits, including smoking, poor diet and staying up late, related to a 'collective anxiety'.

This backs up an Office for National Statistics survey which reveals that 65% of people feel more stressed and anxious.

Salford sister, Peggy Seeger, who, with Ewan MacColl, made Dirty Old Town the city's anthem, and Briana Corrigan, ex-Beautiful South, have joined Covid-19 Sing4Safety, a fundraiser for women in Salford and Manchester locked down in abusive relationships.

An array of singer/songwriters and spoken word artists have given a video performance to publish every day to raise £2,000 for Women's Aid..."Sing4Safety is a wonderful, much needed project", says Peggy Seeger.

Despite objections from the local community and councillors, Salford City Council Planning Panel yesterday approved planning permission for 157 flats and terraced properties in Seedley...

After slating the Salix Homes development design as "hideous", Lynne Pringle Adley, representing Goulden Street residents, told the Panel, "We've knocked down many terraced houses in this area and what are going to be built now? More terraced houses, and that was not the point." Meanwhile, Councillor Bob Clarke called the development a "deeply disturbing" planning "disaster".

Over ten years ago, Salford City Council spent millions of pounds of public money kicking out residents and knocking down affordable terraced houses in Seedley and Langworthy. Today, the Council will be considering a planning application from Salix Homes for a scheme that includes back to back terraced housing in the former streets!

Out of 157 properties, only 17 will be for social rent – those purchased from Salix by Salford Council, as the city's crazy housing policies roll on.

HUGE SALFORD LUXURY APARTMENT SCHEME HAS NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Tomorrow morning, Salford City Council's Planning Panel will be considering lots of contentious planning applications, including one for 500 apartments in Ordsall in blocks ranging from six to nine storeys.

There should be 20% affordable housing. There isn't any. There should be millions of pounds in planning fees. There aren't, because the developer states that the scheme wouldn't be 'viable' if it had to pay up. That viability assessment should be made public. It's not...

Confirmed cases of coronavirus in Salford rose by only eight, up to 874 from 866, as the epidemic appears to be slowing in the city. There were also no new deaths reported from Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, a poll of one thousand parents by teachers' union the NEU concludes that 33% of parents do not immediately plan to send their children back to school once measures are relaxed, and believe that proper safety measures should be in place before schools re-open.

Virus-related care home deaths now represent 40% of all COVID-19 deaths in Salford.

SALFORD MP STAGGERED AT PM’S SCHOOL OPENING ROADMAP AS TEACHERS’ UNION SAYS ‘NO’ TO PLANS

Within one hour of Boris Johnson's lockdown speech yesterday, 49,000 members of the National Education Union, or NEU, gave a resounding 'No' to his roadmap for school reopening, while Salford and Eccles MP and Shadow Education Secretary Rebecca Long Bailey called it "staggering".

Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, tweeted in response to the PM's confusing wider announcement: "Trying to keep a sense of national unity. But not sure the PM has helped us there". Meanwhile, there have been six new virus cases in Salford and one more sad death.

ALBERT PARK TESTING SITE OPENS FOR THREE DAYS

"We are basically here to support the NHS and facilitating more testing for the country..." Lieutenant Sam Marks, 1st Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment

A mobile coronavirus testing site, set up by the British Army with help from Salford City Council, has opened in the car park of Albert Park, Broughton. The site will be open for three days, until Tuesday - but the public cannot just turn up, and have to make an appointment via the Government website if they meet the criteria.

ARMY SETS UP TESTING SITE IN BROUGHTON

The British Army is setting up a mobile testing site in Albert Park, Broughton, the area with the most deaths from coronavirus in Salford. The site will be open from this Sunday, 10th May until Tuesday 12th May and anyone who is eligible for a test can be referred via the Government website.

Meanwhile, Salford cases of the virus have risen by ten, to 855, and public sector trade union, UNISON, is 'appalled' that some of Nightingale Hospital Manchester's healthcare heroes are being underpaid.

AS 76 NEW VIRUS CASES CONFIRMED IN SALFORD CAMPAIGNERS SAY 'NO RETURN TO WORK UNTIL IT'S SAFE'

Last night, at 8pm, dozens of health workers and trade unionists gathered outside the A&E at Salford Royal Hospital for the weekly applause for those on the front line of the pandemic.

But, as confirmed cases of coronavirus in Salford rose by 76 to 844, and one new death was announced, the People Before Profit group also joined in with demands...'PPE, Test and Track - if it's not safe we're not going back!'

Salford has seen confirmed cases of coronavirus rise from 727 to 758, up by 31, and the second highest rise in cases in Greater Manchester. Only Wigan had a steeper rise. There has also been one further sad death at Salford Royal Hospital.

77 SALFORD CARE HOME DEATHS TO 24TH APRIL

New statistics from the Office for National Statistics, or ONS, show that of 212 COVID-19 deaths registered up to 24th April, 77 happened in care homes, 128 in hospital and seven occurred at home. That is 36.3% of all coronavirus deaths in Salford and almost one quarter of all care home deaths from all causes.

KEY WORKERS AND HOSPITALS FEATURE IN NEW TOP TRUMPS SETS

After rises in confirmed coronavirus cases of over one hundred at the weekend, Salford appears to be levelling out again with 13 new cases reported, taking the tally to 727 from 714 the previous day.

Meanwhile, Top Trumps have brought out two new decks, called Britain At Its Best, with hospitals, including the MRI, featured on one pack and Key Workers included on another. The British Psychological Society has also issued an advice booklet for key workers and their children.

OVER 100 NEW CONFIRMED CASES OF SALFORD VIRUS OVER WEEKEND

Confirmed cases of coronavirus in Salford have leapt from 642 to 714, a rise of 72 cases in just one day, following the previous day's rise of thirty new cases. Other areas in Greater Manchester have seen similar leaps, which could be the result of increased testing.

Meanwhile, Forever Manchester is offering awards of up to £5,000 for community groups responding to the impact of COVID‐19.

SALFORD'S ANGEL GOMES AND JAMIE MOORE PRAISE ORDSALL 12 YEAR OLD

Manchester United's Angel Gomes and fellow Salfordian boxing legend, Jamie Moore, have praised 12 year old Ordsall girl, Jasmine Rose, as she aims to collect 50,000 pieces of rubbish during her daily exercise, and to raise money for the NHS.

"Amazing work" tweeted Gomes to his 365,000 followers "She's setting a great example."

SALFORD CORONAVIRUS DEATHS BY AREA AS BROUGHTON AND WORSLEY HAVE HIGHEST NUMBERS

BROUGHTON PARK, WORSLEY, LITTLE HULTON NORTH AND HIGHER BROUGHTON HAVE HIGHEST COVID DEATH RATES

New localised figures produced by the Office for National Statistics show that, in Salford, Broughton Park has the highest number of sad COVID-19 deaths with 15, followed by Worsley with 14, Little Hulton North and Higher Broughton with 13.

Meanwhile the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Salford has risen by 17, to 612, with one new sad death announced by Salford Royal Hospital.
