£7.5MILLION GRANTS FOR SALFORD HOUSING WITH NO DETAILS - £1.8MILLION QUAYS PAYMENTS WITH NO DETAILS

Transparency and openness are becoming a thing of the past at Salford City Council, as around £10million of money being collected or handed out has no proper information or scrutiny attached.

Last week, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, or GMCA, handed out around £7.5million to developers in Salford – with no details on whether there was any affordable housing or who the developers actually were. This Thursday the Council's Planning Panel will discuss a huge development at Salford Quays with Section 106 payments of almost £1.8million – sounds a good deal for the city? Probably not.

SALFORD HAS 27 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS NHS URGES PEOPLE TO OPEN WINDOWS

WELL VENTILATED ROOMS CAN CUT CHANCE OF CATCHING COVID BY 80%

Salford has 27 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 31, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 76.9, down from 80.4. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

As the spring sun comes out, NHS Salford CCG is advising people to keep rooms well ventilated which can cut the chance of catching COVID-19 by 80%.

WESTMINSTER HOUSE TENANTS NEGLECTED IN £22MILLION ARTIFEX AND CANON GREEN COMPLEX

Residents in Westminster House, now part of the Salix Homes complex comprising the £22million new Artifex block for 'young professionals' and the refurbished Canon Green Court, are living with overflowing bins and rats in their flats.

"I'm at the end of my tether" says one resident "I've got rats in my kitchen cupboards. We've been treated very unfairly; we're left behind in everything they do."

Salford has 31 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 22, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 80.4, down from 86.5. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, the new Government interactive map of infections for the week ending 24th March shows Broughton Park, and Swinton South East and Pendlebury West with the lowest number of cases, while Walkden North East, Little Hulton North and Clifton have the highest number of cases.

FORMAL NOTICE OF ELECTIONS PUBLISHED

This afternoon, the formal Notice of Election has been published, which marks the pre-election period in the run up to polling day on Thursday 6th May. On that date all of Salford City Council seats are up for grabs, plus voting for the next Salford City Mayor and Greater Manchester Mayor.

The deadline for people to register for a vote is 19th April, while candidates have until 8th April to declare they are standing.

Meanwhile, from today outdoor gatherings, including in private gardens, of either six people or two households is allowed, while outdoor sports facilities can open.

86% COMPLYING WITH SELF-ISOLATION RULES

Salford has 33 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 32, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 89.2, down from 105.5. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, a new Office for National Statistics survey of people self-isolating found that 86% of respondents fully adhered to self-isolation requirements but 37% of those people reported 'a negative effect on their well-being and mental health', and 32% reported having lost income.

VAST INCREASE IN TESTING BUT NO HUGE RISE IN CASES

Salford has 32 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 34, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 105.5, down from 110.5. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

During March, testing in Salford has almost doubled, from 6,798 tests during the week of 6th March, to over 11,000 during the following two weeks but cases have only risen slightly.

CHURCH GIVEN MARCHING ORDERS AT SALFORD CINEMA

The future of the iconic Grade II listed Salford Cinema, which for years has been used by the New Harvest Church, is in doubt as owners Richard and Nancy Salazar have told the church to leave the premises.

"We were shocked and disappointed to be told to leave" says a spokesperson for the Church "We're working to find another location. And we genuinely don't know what he intends to do with the building."

HALF OF SALFORD'S ADULT POPULATION NOW VACCINATED

Meanwhile, over 100,000 vaccines have been administered in the city, meaning around half the adult population have now had the jab.

GREATER MANCHESTER TO BE FIRST CITY REGION OUTSIDE LONDON TO HAVE BUSES UNDER LOCAL CONTROL

Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, has, at last, made the decision to take control of local buses, which will be the first time since deregulation in 1986...

"My decision will mean that we can integrate our buses as part of a joined-up network, so passengers can easily switch between different types of transport" he says "It means simpler fares and ticketing with price capping, so no-one pays more than they need to."

NEW 'RIVERSIDE HEALTH CENTRE' AT MOCHA PARADE

Plans for a new health centre at Mocha Parade, to be called the Riverside Health Centre, will be considered by Salford City Council's planning panel next week.

The centre will have its main facilities above floor one to avoid any flooding worries, although the three medical-related retail units attached will be on ground level. The new building will incorporate Mocha Parade Medical Practice, Lower Broughton Health Centre and Community Health Services.

Meanwhile, the COVID Memorial Campaign, which is looking to make 23rd March an annual anniversary, is also asking people to submit designs for a COVID Memorial Monument.

100 Embankment, the second of the so-called 'ugly sisters' office blocks opposite Manchester Cathedral, owned by Salford City Council at an investment cost of £72.392million, remains empty after a prospective purchaser pulled out of a deal.

However, an upbeat Council report states that "100 Embankment is well placed to take advantage of pent up demand as we emerge from the pandemic in the next six months". Really?

As the first anniversary of lockdown happens, a new report by Salford City Council and the University of Salford on the economic impacts of COVID-19 has been published which shows the city's unemployment has increased by 93% between March 2020 and January 2021, Universal Credit claimant levels have increased by 97% and young people have been economically hit the hardest during the coronavirus crisis.

Today is the anniversary of the first national lockdown and there is a Day of Reflection, led by the Marie Curie charity, with a minute's silence at midday, flags lowered outside fire stations and a streamed service from Manchester Cathedral from around 11:30am on its Facebook page.

At last week's full meeting of Salford City Council, Labour and Conservative politicians accused each other of hypocrisy over the cladding scandal that has engulfed the nine Pendleton blocks, owned by Salford Council, that were covered in dangerous cladding.

The Tories accused Labour of 'hypocrisy' over its cladding motion for avoiding mention of social tenants, while Labour accused the Tories of 'hypocrisy' as it was their Government that has prolonged the scandal. In fact, they were both right.

GRADE II LISTED DEMOLISHED HOUSES IN SALFORD HAD SO MANY MEMORIES

This week, the Salford Star reported on the demolition of two Grade II listed buildings on the corner of Bury New Road and Vine Street, which drew a lot of comments, including some quite prolific memories from Star reader, Chrissie McBride, who remembers living in 'Dis-Graceland' for two periods in the 80s and 90s when the houses were filled with mad and incredible characters.

This is Chrissie's story, which we think will ring bells with anyone who knew the place or who has lived in a similar environment.

'ANOTHER KICK IN THE TEETH' - ST MARK'S PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENTS

Parents of children with Special Educational Needs, or SEN, who go to St Mark's CE Primary in Worsley are worried that too much pressure is being put on them to help with catch-up work following the re-opening of the school.

Key Stage 1 pupils have two homework books, which parents are expected to mark, plus a reading book, and spelling and times tables to learn for tests. After all the home schooling one mother of an SEN pupil told the Salford Star "we feel this is just another kick in the teeth".

At the GM Leaders' press conference yesterday, Andy Burnham, described the current rise in infections as a "bumpy picture" with the increase in a school testing a "significant factor". However the number of patients in GM hospitals is falling, with the pressure on the NHS easing.

SALFORD GRADE II LISTED BUILDINGS DEMOLISHED

KERSAL LISTED PROPERTIES WERE SUPPOSED TO BE REFURBISHED BUT ARE NOW RUBBLE

Two Grade II listed Victorian villas on the corner of Bury New Road and Vine Street have been demolished with workmen saying that the buildings had become too dangerous to save.

The protected properties, dating from 1857, had planning permission only for them to be refurbished into flats. Local residents have complained to Salford Council for years about neglect from their owner allowing the buildings to fall into disrepair.

SALFORD LIDL PROPOSED FOR MOCHA PARADE IN FLOOD ZONE 3A

FLOOD BASIN FRONTS NEW LIDL LOWER BROUGHTON STORE

Plans have been published for the new Lidl store on the site of Mocha Parade in Lower Broughton which show a new flood basin and 'wildflower meadow' between the store and the River Irwell.

The store is in Flood Zone 3a, which the Environment Agency rates as 'less vulnerable' - however, the proposal adds that the "surrounding area on Mocha Parade may flood in an event, resulting in anyone entering and exiting the Lidl Mocha Parade store being at risk". As expected, there's no room for any of the ex-shops to move back, just a health centre in the corner of the site.

As yet another developer, Himor Property Ltd, is apparently trying to buy a big stake in Swinton Park Golf and Country Club Ltd, the Save Swinton Park Golf Club campaign is appealing to the community to donate towards legal fees as it prepares to fight again to save the site. Already, over £2,500 has been raised from a target of £5,000.

VACCINES WORKING AS OVER 60 INFECTION RATE FALLS

Salford has 32 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 46, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population has now stands at 102.4, down from 109.3. There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital

Meanwhile, the rolling rate of infection per 100,000 population continues to plummet for those over 60 years old at a much faster rate than for under 60s, as the vaccine data kicks in.

Salford has 46 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 42, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population has now crept back over 100 and stands at 109.3, up from 99.3. There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, a new UNISON survey of over 1,500 school support staff in the North West has found that the vast majority believe the 'big bang' opening of schools was a mistake, with 75% favouring a phased or staggered return.

SALFORD COUNCIL CLADDING MOTION IGNORES ITS OWN NINE PENDLETON BLOCKS

A motion on the cladding scandal by Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, and Councillor Ann-Marie Humphreys, to be put before a full meeting of Salford Council next week, has drawn accusations of hypocrisy from social housing tenants in the nine Pendleton blocks owned by Salford Council.

The motion centres on "thousands of private leaseholders" and the "cruel effect on Salford resident's mental health, leaving them in unsafe homes and facing life-changing bills" – but states nothing about tenants in its own Pendleton blocks who have suffered with similar issues, and generally been ignored, or "left to rot" as one tenant puts it..

Meanwhile, at yesterday's Greater Manchester Leaders' press conference, GM Mayor, Andy Burnham, relayed positive statistics, concluding that "the light at the end of the tunnel just got a little bit brighter".

GREATER MANCHESTER YEAR 10 PUPILS LOSE HOPE AND OPTIMISM

ONE THIRD OF YEAR 10 GIRLS NOT 'HOPEFUL AND OPTIMISTIC ABOUT FUTURE'

In the latest Greater Manchester Life Readiness Survey in which one in five Year 10 pupils participated, 72% of young people were 'optimistic and hopeful' about the future, down from 85% in 2018; while for girls this figure drops to 67% compared to 83% in 2018.

The figures were relayed by Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, who said "It's confirming what most people would have expected...Clearly this reflects a difficult twelve months for young people in Greater Manchester..."

No less than ten local councillors are set to retire ahead of the Salford local election in May when all sixty seats are up for grabs. Nine of the retiring councillors are from Labour, including senior councillor and planning head, Derek Antrobus.

PENDLETON, CLIFTON AND WORSLEY HAVE ALMOST NO VIRUS CASES

Salford has 56 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 42, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 97, down from 101.2. It's the first time the infection rate for Salford has dropped below 100 for over six months, and there have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, Pendleton, Clifton and Worsley have almost no coronavirus cases according to the new interactive map published by the Government yesterday.
