SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2009

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 10

THE `I'LL GIVE YOU THREE BROKEN MARBLES AND A DEAD WHITE MOUSE FOR YOUR HOUSE' AWARD

This prestigious award is given for services in undervaluing houses that Salford Council would like to demolish as part of its plan to clear…sorryhelp the community.

The usual pattern is that the Council weighs in with some ridiculously low offer, which is rejected…then it comes back with a slightly better but still ridiculously low offer, which is also rejected. Then, you have the option of bringing in the `independent district valuer', who will give you a true independent valuation for your home.

So…Ladies and Gentlemen.  THE `I'LL GIVE YOU THREE BROKEN MARBLES AND A DEAD WHITE MOUSE FOR YOUR HOUSE' AWARD…goes to…

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 9

THE `YOU WHAT? £130,000 TO DO UP A TERRACE HOUSE!' AWARD

Who could charge over £130,000 to refurbish terrace houses in the Top Streets of Higher Broughton?

Could it be Gordon Brown? Nah, the Prime Minister replied to a resident, via his Communities and Local Government Department two years ago estimating the cost at around £70,000 per terrace.

Could it be local builders? Nope. A local builder reckoned it would cost between £50,000 and £70,000 per property.

What about City West Housing? Not them either – they did up similar houses in Irlam this year for around £37,000

How about Urban Vision – Salford Council's own joint venture company? No.  They quoted a price of £64,313 to refurbish a terrace in Gainsborough Street, literally across the road from the Top Streets.

Who could it have been then????

Ladies and Gentlemen.  The winner of the `YOU WHAT? £130,000 TO DO UP A TERRACE HOUSE!' AWARD…goes to…

DAY 9

THE `GO STAND IN THE CORNER' AWARD FOR SCHOOL BUILDING

What a year it's been for Salford schools!

We got them too small…We got them too big…We even got them with escape routes!  Schools opening...Schools closing…Schools that don't know whether they're opening or closing or too big or too small…Schools that can only wonder about the motivation and maths of those who are in control.

Ladies and Gentlemen. Put on your dunces hats and give it up for the winner of the `GO STAND IN THE CORNER' AWARD FOR SCHOOL BUILDING…

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 9

THE `I'M GONNA SUE YER ASS' AWARD

Lots of contenders for this category – from Chek Whyte's `people' who threatened to sue the Salford Star while we were investigating his bankruptcy (never happened), to John Carberry, head of Salford Council press dept, who suggested the Star might get sued if it didn't remove a pair of 'inverted commas' from a story (like who can be bothered going to court over a pair of `inverted commas'?)…to Urban Splash's Tom Bloxham who has been chucking legal letters and gagging agreements around this year, (although not to the Star) – unfortunately we can't give details because they've all got gagging orders…

However, while there were many worthy nominations, again there can only be one winner…a winner who has threatened to sue the whole world's media!

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 9

THE `ERROR OF JUDGEMENT' AWARD

This MARY goes to the person who has made the biggest `errors of judgement' in 2009. While the queue of potential winners would stretch from Little Hulton to Lower Broughton, and include virtually everyone in Salford's regeneration industry, there can be only one supreme winner…with some supreme `errors of judgement'.

THE QUOTE OF THE YEAR AWARD

DAY 8

THE `MY GOD! YOU'RE ACTUALLY SPEAKING THE TRUTH!' AWARD

It's nice when one of Salford's fat cats comes out with a quote that would have everybody in the city nodding in agreement. And here it is…

"Communities have grown understandably cynical over the years, having been promised so much… and so little delivered…"

Quite right…here, here…etc etc…

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 7

THE WEBSITE OF THE YEAR AWARD

This year it has been incredibly difficult to pick an overall website winner – there's Salford City Council's impossible to find anything effort; there's the North West Development Agency's `put nothing on it no-one will notice' site; and the NDC's ongoing absolutely useless waste of the internet…

These were all contenders. But in the end the judges decided to share the MARY between two stunningly incompetent sites, both with a brief to let everyone know what they're up to.

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 4

THE `Of Course We're Not Trying To Clear The Community Out Of Central Salford That's Next To Manchester, The River, The University and the BBC Media City Site'  AWARD

Yes, almost 1500 family houses are to be bulldozed in Salford over the next four years, to add to the 220 that will have been trashed during 2009-10…and the 2500 homes that have been demolished before that in Central Salford.

And, of course, these homes are to be replaced with even more towerblocks, or `apartments' as they're now known.

Ladies and Gentlemen. We're sure you can all guess the winner of this MARY but the `Of Course We're Not Trying To Clear The Community Out Of Central Salford That's Next To Manchester, The River, The University and the BBC Media City Site'  Award…goes to…

DAY 3

THE `£53,000,000 DOWN THE DRAIN' AWARD

Is it really possible that £53million ploughed into a "deprived area" over ten years can make virtually no difference?

MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 3

THE `WHERE ARE YOU SPENDING OVER £122M OF PUBLIC MONEY? NEVER HEARD OF IT!' AWARD

This is an Award that the whole of Salford can join in with…

Yes, until the year 2014, £122.6million of public money will be spent on Salford's `Corporate Centre'.  But where is Salford's `Corporate Centre'?
No-one seems to know.

A few months ago the Salford Star sent out an e-mail to a cross party selection of councillors asking where they thought the city's `Corporate Centre' was. Not one single councillor who replied got it right… `Is it at Salford Quays?' they asked …`Probably the Civic Centre?'…Nope they all got it wrong…

SALFORD UNEMPLOYMENT RISES

Star date: 17th December 2009

SO MUCH FOR REGENERATION

Unemployment has fallen everywhere in Greater Manchester – except Salford.

The total number of people claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance fell by 3.9% in Oldham, 1.7% in Trafford, 1.6% in Rochdale and 1.2% in Wigan. But in Salford it rose 1% to 7,847.

These are incredible figures when the sheer volume of public money that’s been pumped into the city for `regeneration’ is taken into account…hundreds of millions of pounds. So where has it gone? On creating jobs for the regenerators who live outside Salford? Shocking!

It's about the knackered `regeneration'...it's about Hazel virtually ignoring Salford while she was a Minister and now scurrying round looking for support...and it's about the full expenses claims...over £9000 for food?
