MARY BURNS AWARDS
DAY 9
THE `YOU WHAT? £130,000 TO DO UP A TERRACE HOUSE!' AWARD
Who could charge over £130,000 to refurbish terrace houses in the Top Streets of Higher Broughton?
Could it be Gordon Brown? Nah, the Prime Minister replied to a resident, via his Communities and Local Government Department two years ago estimating the cost at around £70,000 per terrace.
Could it be local builders? Nope. A local builder reckoned it would cost between £50,000 and £70,000 per property.
What about City West Housing? Not them either – they did up similar houses in Irlam this year for around £37,000
How about Urban Vision – Salford Council's own joint venture company? No. They quoted a price of £64,313 to refurbish a terrace in Gainsborough Street, literally across the road from the Top Streets.
Who could it have been then????
