FOREVER MANCHESTER CHARITY FUNDS FOR SALFORD COMMUNITY

£1,000 FOR SALFORD COMMUNITY GROUPS

Ace Greater Manchester charity, Forever Manchester, is offering community groups in Salford grants of up to £1,000 via its partnerships with the Auto Trader Community Fund (deadline 26th March) and the CDL Fund (deadline tomorrow 1st March).

Forever Manchester also raises money for groups via its Captain Manchester Magical Tombola which has a prize on 12th March of £1,000 to celebrate its fiftieth draw, and by selling top local affordable art prints.

SALFORD INFECTIONS DECREASE AGAIN

Salford has 40 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 58, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 166.9, down from 179.7. Yesterday, the Star reported that half the boroughs in Greater Manchester had seen case rates rise, while today, most boroughs have seen a decline.

There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital, as the Salford NHS Vaccination Service is now inviting people aged 55 to 59 for a jab, although its website invites anyone over 50, and the NHS nationally is calling those aged 60 to 63. Confusing?

HELP TO IMPROVE CARE IN GREATER MANCHESTER

Research for the Future is an NHS supported initiative, and is looking for adults in Salford and Greater Manchester to get involved in health research and help discover new ways to prevent, diagnose and manage illnesses.

The team are particularly keen to hear from people living with long term conditions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or respiratory disease, although everyone is welcome to join, whether they have a health condition or not.

SALFORD HAS 58 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS WALKDEN AND LITTLE HULTON AREAS HAVE HIGHEST INFECTION RATES

PRESSURE EASES AT SALFORD ROYAL HOSPITAL

Salford has 58 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 49, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population has remained the same, standing at 179.7. While Salford's infection rate is stable, half of the ten Greater Manchester boroughs have seen 7 day infection rates rising slightly.

According to new Government data, the Little Hulton and Walkden areas of Salford have the highest infection rates in the city, while Langworthy Buile Hill and Lower Irlam and Cadishead have the lowest. Meanwhile, pressure from COVID at Salford Royal Hospital is easing, and there have been no new virus-related deaths at the hospital.

TWO CONSULTANTS PAID £250,000 TO MANAGE SALFORD CYCLE AND TRAFFIC SCHEMES

HUGE SALARIES FROM PUBLIC FUNDS TO MANAGE SALFORD INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

Salford City Council is to continue paying infrastructure firm, Aecom, around £250,000 for two project and programme managers to handle a further twelve months of walking, cycling and traffic infrastructure projects, including Chapel Street, Trafford Road and the New Bailey Gateway.

While funding for the consultants paid by Salford Council can be claimed back from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, even Council officers state that "there is still a cost to public funds, alternative employment options could reduce the overall costs".

Meanwhile, residents aged sixty and over can now book appointments for a vaccination, and teachers' union, the NEU, gives the Government withering support for its school graded exam strategy, calling it "the least worst option".

COST OF REPAIRING SALFORD CHAPEL STREET MUSHROOMS TO OVER £1.5MILLION

RUBBISH ROAD TO BE RESURFACED, LAY-BY FOR CATHEDRAL AND £23,000 ON TREE AUTOPSY

In 2019, the Salford Star reported that, just seven years after completion, Chapel Street was about to have £490,000 worth of repairs, after a botched job on the original road 'improvements'. Now the cost has trebled as Salford City Council is set to blow £1.559million on the scheme. It also includes a lay by for Salford Cathedral in Great George Street, and a £23,000 tree 'autopsy'.

Meanwhile, a further £4.8million is to be spent on walking and cycling routes along a section of Chapel Street, on the so-called 'Bee Network' between New Bailey Street and Blackfriars Street.

Salford has 60 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 38, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 183.9, down from 199. There have been three new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, has welcomed the Government's "cautious, phased approach" to the release of lockdown, adding that the roadmap "feels like our voice has been heard". 34% of the region's adults have now been vaccinated and pressure is easing on the hospitals.

SALFORD CITY COUNCIL PASSES BUDGET AND COUNCIL TAX RISE

TORY NO RISE COUNCIL TAX AMENDMENT DEFEATED

Salford councillors this morning passed the Salford City Mayor budget for 2021-22, including a Council Tax rise of 3.99%, plus a GM Mayoral Police and Crime precept rise of £10 per household.

Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, added that the city continues to face "significant financial risks" in the future, with an expected shortfall of £21million in the two years following this year's budget.

WORK STARTS ON £68MILLION SALFORD ROYAL HOSPITAL TRAUMA CENTRE

SALFORD SET TO TAKE 90% OF ALL GREATER MANCHESTER TRAUMA PATIENTS

Work has started on a new £68million major centre at Salford Royal Hospital, which will take ninety per cent of all Greater Manchester's trauma patients. The James Potter Building, as it will be called, will open in 2023, complete with a helipad.

"The facility will be purpose-built for the sickest patients – whom for many, time is of the essence in relation to their care and treatment" says Northern Care Alliance NHS Group Chief Executive Raj Jain.

SALFORD MPS CALL FOR MORE FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND SAFER SCHOOLS

This afternoon, after Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out his roadmap for the end of lockdown, beginning with all schools returning and named visitors allowed into care homes from 8th March, Salford MPs and the Greater Manchester Mayor reacted to specific issues.

Worsley and Eccles South MP Barbara Keeley, told the Prime Minister in the Commons that he needed to give people the financial support that they need, while Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long Bailey tweeted the call for a "sensible, phased approach" to opening schools "along with vaccination of key workers".

3-4 'YELLOW CARDS' FOR EVERY 1,000 VACCINE DOSES IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR NEW VACCINE

Salford has 61 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 63, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 206.3, down from 207.5. There have been five new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has published the latest findings on reactions to COVID vaccines, with around three or four members of the public and health professionals reporting 'yellow card' short-lived side effects for every thousand doses, which it states is "not unusual for a new vaccine". Severe reactions are very rare, with one or two cases for every 100,000 doses.

Council Tax for the average Band D property with two adults in Salford is set to rise by £75.45 from April, states Salford City Council in a new finance report. The rise includes a £10 'precept' for the Greater Manchester Mayoral Police and Crime Commissioner, although there will be no increase in the GM Mayoral precept.

Salford Council is raising its Council Tax by 3.99%, the GM Mayoral Police and Crime precept is rising by 4.8% and the GM Mayoral precept is rising by 0%, which averages out at 3.89%.

UTC LOSES PUPILS AS OASIS ACADEMY INCREASES PUPILS

A new report by Salford City Council shows the gains and losses of pupils in all of the city's primary and secondary schools. The main winner was Oasis Academy MediaCityUK, which increased pupil numbers by 123 and its budget by over £1million, while Aldridge UTC MediaCityUK lost 91 pupils and over £455,000 of its budget.

Overall, Salford Council's schools block funding for individual school budgets is £185.1million, an increase of £13.7million for 2021-22.

INDUSTRIAL UNITS FOR LAND BY AJ BELL STADIUM

Salford City Council's ideal of a retail/leisure wonderland around the AJ Bell Stadium is all but over as the Council considers selling three plots of 37.47 acres for the construction of what it calls "industrial/distribution units".

The Council, together with partner Peel Holdings, used the land they own around the Stadium as security on the original £22million cost of constructing the AJ Bell, with money paid back from sales. However, in over ten years, only two plots of land have been sold and every year the stadium company comes calling for more loans.

The clothes are ultra 'climate positive', and the company is looking for local tree planting projects it could get involved with, as for every product sold it plants a tree.

AS PENDLETON FIGURES IN GRENFELL INQUIRY, FIRE EXIT BROKE IN MALUS COURT

As Pendleton has featured in the Grenfell Tower fire Inquiry this week, apparently a fire door exit has been unable to be opened for almost a week in Malus Court, one of the nine blocks owned by Salford City Council and managed by Pendleton Together that had the dangerous cladding on them.

"It's coming off its hinges by the looks of it, you can't push it open" says a resident "We've not been told it's broken, so if there had been a fire I would have been going to this door thinking I'm getting out."

OVER FIVE YEAR WAIT FOR AN ALLOTMENT IN SALFORD

915 PEOPLE ON SALFORD ALLOTMENT WAITING LIST

A new Salford City Council report shows that there's a waiting list 'upward of five years' for an allotment in the city, with 915 people currently on the waiting list, with demand having increased by 33% since the lockdowns.

The Council is looking to get more allotment sites through the planning process, although it wants them to be self-managed to get external funding and 'reduce officer time and Council resources'.

Meanwhile, Elton John and Michael Caine have teamed up to film a short, very funny video urging people to have the vaccination..."It helps protect ourselves and the people we love", says Elton who sends himself up mercilessly in the film.

Salford has 54 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 109, although this could be through a lag in reporting. The seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 260.4, down from 273.9, and there has been one new virus-related death at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, everyone aged 70 and above is urged to now contact the NHS to get a vaccination, rather than waiting for an invite. Registered carers should be in cohort 6, which is two down from the current top four priority groups.

SALFORD LOCAL ELECTIONS TO GO AHEAD ON 6TH MAY

LOCAL WARD, MAYOR AND GM MAYOR ELECTIONS TO GO AHEAD

Cabinet Office Minister Chloe Smith, has today said that local elections will go ahead as planned on 6th May this year, arguing that "Democracy should not be cancelled because of COVID".

The Government is handing councils an extra £31million for plastic screens in polling stations and hand sanitiser, and people will be asked to bring their own pens and wear a mask, or use postal voting. Elections are to be held for Salford City Mayor, all sixty local council seats and for GM Mayor.

SALFORD HAS 96 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS ALMOST 10% OF CITY HAVE HAD THE VIRUS

OVER 20,000 SALFORD RESIDENTS HAVE NOW HAD VIRUS

Salford has 96 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 105, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 280.9, up from 280.1. The cumulative number of virus cases now totals 20,092, which means that ten per cent of adult Salford residents have now had infections.

There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital, and latest figures show that hospital cases are now stabilising, although at a high rate.

HANGING GARDENS OF SALFORD BUILDING GETS PLANNING APPROVAL

12 STOREY GREEN BUILDING GETS COUNCILLORS RAVING

This morning, planning approval was unanimously passed by Salford City Council's planning panel for a twelve storey green office building, with a planted facade, described by Councillor Warmisham as "the Hanging Gardens of Babylon comes to Salford".

The building, which aims to be "as sustainable as possible" and has been designed for the English Cities Fund, will be sited off Stanley Street in New Bailey.

Salford has 105 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 111, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 280.1, up from 274.3. There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, at yesterday's GM Leaders press conference, Health Lead Richard Leese explained that the peak of infections and hospital admissions had been reached but is likely to remain at that level for three weeks. The Leaders also stressed that a proper test, trace and isolate system is crucial to negotiate a way out of restrictions.

SALFORD TO SEE NO CUTS BUDGET THIS YEAR BUT £21MILLION SHORTFALL OVER NEXT THREE YEARS

NO CUTS THIS YEAR BUT COUNCIL BRACED FOR £21MILLION SHORTFALL

Salford City Council is to announce a no cuts budget this year, apart from what has already been announced, but the following two years will see a shortfall of over £21.8million – and that is after £40million projected savings for the three year period have been achieved. The Council blames 'the impact of COVID-19 upon council tax and business rates income'.

Meanwhile Council Tax is set to increase by 4.99%, although no final figure has been disclosed. Salford Council passed a motion at its last meeting calling on the Government to increase funding 'to mitigate the impact on local council tax payers'.
