150 HOUSES IN PENDLETON TO BE DEMOLISHED – TO BE REPLACED BY WHAT?

Salford Council is set to approve the demolition of 150 now empty houses on the High Street Estate in Pendleton, near Salford Precinct, at a cost of £1,112,161. As yet, no details have been released publicly as to what type of properties will replace them. Three years ago, the Council stated that only 52 'affordable rented homes' would be provided for displaced families.

SALFORD 'AT RISK' VICTORIA THEATRE GETS £21,000 VIABILITY GRANT

The Grade II listed, Victoria Theatre in Lower Broughton has moved a step closer to being saved, with a grant of £21,000 from the Theatres Trust handed to the Salford Victoria Theatre Trust for a viability study to determine the best use for the building.

BREXIT PARTY WINS IN SALFORD AND NORTH WEST

Salford's European Election results saw the Brexit Party come first with 14,867 votes, followed by the Labour Party with 11,376, LibDems with 7,110 and Green Party with 6,689.

This broadly follows the results for the whole North West constituency where the Brexit Party got three seats, with the 'soft' Brexit and Remain parties getting the majority - Labour two seats, LibDems two seats and Greens one seat.

PROGRESSIVE PEOPLE URGED TO VOTE IN EURO ELECTION TO STOP 'ALARMING' RIGHT WING PARTIES

The largest poll of how people will vote in this week's Euro Election shows Nigel Farage's Brexit Party on 32%, ten points ahead of Labour in the North West, which has 22%. The LibDems are forecast to poll 17%, with the Greens and Tories on 9%.

The poll was carried out by YouGov and Datapraxis for the anti-Brexit Best for Britain, and anti-racist HOPE not hate, whose CEO Nick Lowles says: "These results are incredibly alarming. They envision a populist right party storming to victory in these elections...That's why it is so important that progressives get out and vote on Thursday."

Today, residents of the Swinton Saving People Shelter are due in court in relation to a possession order made by Trafford Housing Trust but the action, the Salford Star understands, will not be contested as everyone in the building has been offered alternative accommodation.

On the day that Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, announced that his A Bed Every Night initiative was to be extended for a year, the Sheriff's Office enforcement agents evicted the Eccles Saving People Shelter which catered for homeless people who had fallen through the scheme's net.

Around a dozen agents arrived, complete with stab vests and dog handlers but most of the residents had already been moved out – to a new occupied building in Swinton.

Hundreds of people attended today's May Day parade, which began in Bexley Square and meandered to the Sacred Trinity Church, complete with dancers, banners, a pipe band and a samba band.

A feeder march from the Eccles Saving People Shelter drew attention to the eviction of over a dozen homeless people from the Shelter next Tuesday, with one of its occupants speaking at the subsequent rally slating Andy Burnham for false promises.

Today, Saturday, sees the annual Salford May Day rally in Bexley Square at 1pm, followed by a march to Sacred Trinity Church. Guest speakers will include Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long-Bailey and Steve Turner, Assistant General Secretary of Unite the Union.

There is also a march against homelessness to Bexley Square, from the occupied doctor's surgery in Eccles which is due to be evicted next Tuesday 7th May.

LABOUR LOSES IRLAM TO INDEPENDENT BUT SCRAPE CADISHEAD

Independents Alliance candidate, Darren Goulden, took the Labour Party seat of Irlam with a majority of 125 at last night's Salford Council local election, but Labour scraped Cadishead with its candidate, Lewis Nelson, elected with a majority of just 64 over Independent Dave Pike.

While Irlam was the only seat that changed hands, it was also a good night for UKIP and the Green Party, while Independent Alliance candidate, Carol Boyce, came second in Swinton South, cutting the Labour Party majority to 250.

Today is voting day in the Salford City Council local election, with the polls open between 7am and 10pm. There are 19 seats up for grabs, with the Walkden South ward election postponed due to the death of the Conservative Party candidate.

ST GEORGE'S PLAYING FIELD PROPOSED FOR 209 HOUSES, WHILE LOWRY MILL POND AND WEASTE RESERVOIR TO BE FILLED

At next week's Planning Panel of Salford City Council, Bellway Homes is proposing to build 209 houses on greenspace land, formerly used as St George's School playing fields in Little Hulton.

Meanwhile councillors will also discuss an application to convert one of the ponds at the Lowry Mill in Swinton into a car park, while the Planning Inspector has ruled that the reservoir at Weaste Trading Estate can be filled in for a commercial unit and car parking, as Salford's environment is set to suffer another blow.
