ECCLES POLICE ISSUE 'WHY ARE YOU HERE?' TICKETS

As the confirmed number of coronavirus cases in Salford increases by twelve, to 104, the Eccles team of Greater Manchester Police is issuing tickets to motorists asking 'Why are you here today?', in relation to those using vehicles to travel to parks and similar places for exercise.

Meanwhile, a banner has been placed outside Salford Royal Hospital stating 'You are not alone, Manchester is with you', while the Sounds of Salford radio station has been re-born for those staying home.

SALFORD STILL HAS HIGHEST NUMBER OF VIRUS CASES IN GREATER MANCHESTER AS VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT TO SEW SCRUBS

Confirmed cases of coronavirus in Salford have now leapt to 92, up by 24 from the previous day. The city still has the most cases in Greater Manchester, with Manchester itself now having 91.

Meanwhile a Facebook site, set up by a nurse, and called For The Love Of Scrubs – Our NHS Needs You, is looking for volunteers to sew together scrubs for frontline staff.

SALFORD NOW HAS MOST CORONAVIRUS CASES IN GREATER MANCHESTER

Salford now has 78 confirmed cases of coronavirus, up by twenty on the previous day, and has jumped ahead of Manchester (76) as having the most cases in Greater Manchester.

It is still a lot less than the country's top virus hotspot today, Birmingham which has 428 confirmed cases, followed by Hampshire (384) and Sheffield (361).

SALFORD NOW HAS 31 CASES OF CORONAVIRUS

Salford now has 31 officially confirmed cases of coronavirus, up from 25 previously. Stockport has 42 confirmed cases, while Hampshire has 207 cases and Lambeth 188.

Meanwhile, the Post Office has put out a plea to customers asking them to practice good hand hygiene and to maintain 'a sensible distance between other customers and our colleagues'.

WALKDEN AND LITTLE HULTON VOLUNTEERS OFFER HELP DURING VIRUS CRISIS

CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT GROUP IN WALKDEN AND LITTLE HULTON

Volunteers are offering everything from a friendly phone call to dog walking and collecting prescriptions for people in Little Hulton and Walkden... "It's to help our local community with whatever they might need" says Gemma Fish who has set up the group.

Walkden High School Year 11 students have produced a brilliantly funny video showing their footy skills with a toilet roll to entertain whilst isolating at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. And it's subsequently had thousands and thousands of views.

Salford now has 23 official cases of coronavirus, almost double yesterday's figure of twelve cases and is now not too far behind Manchester which has 31 cases but is well below places in the south, where 156 cases have been confirmed in Hampshire.

Meanwhile, Loaves and Fishes is running a reduced service and almost all Salford Council and Salford Community Leisure public spaces have shut.

PETITION CALLS FOR MORE HELP FOR SELF EMPLOYED

As the coronavirus crisis kicks in, self employed people, including cabbies, journalists and those working in the gig economy, are losing all forms of income with potentially horrendous consequences.

Now, Rob Berrisford has launched a petition calling for the Government to pay the self employed 80% of last year's turnover, while the National Union of Journalists is calling for a 'base salary' or compensation.

FIDDLERS LANE PRIMARY SCHOOL IN IRLAM RECEIVES £1,000 FROM SOLAR PANELS

Greater Manchester Community Renewables (GMCR) has awarded a grant of £1,000 to Fiddlers Lane Primary School in Irlam, as a result of having community-owned solar panels installed on its roof. The grant will be used to fund an in-school recycling scheme and a video link to the school's bird box.

SALFORD VIRUS CASES UP BY TWO

Salford now has twelve confirmed cases of coronavirus, while Manchester now has 28 cases. Wigan, which formerly had the lowest cases in Greater Manchester with four, now has nine cases.

Salford Royal Hospital is asking people to limit visits to patients and is only letting in immediate family members and carers for one hour per day.

Meanwhile, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust has stated that, sadly, two patients have passed away at the Hospital..."Both patients had tested positive for COVID-19. Both patients were female, in their 80s and had underlying health conditions".

Salford Quays Community Forum states that it is 'utterly horrified' by Salford City Council's decision to go ahead with today's planning meeting where an application for a huge development at Pier 7 has been met with almost one hundred objections.

The Forum states that that the decision to continue with the meeting 'flies in the face of the direction of travel by the government and potentially puts our members (many of whom are elderly) at risk of illness (or worse)'.

NEU ADVISES VULNERABLE TEACHERS TO 'STOP ATTENDING' SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES FROM MONDAY

The National Education Union, NEU, has written to the Prime Minister this morning stating that "We intend to advise all our members in these [vulnerable] categories or caring for people in them to stop attending schools and colleges from next Monday at the latest. Some will do so earlier. We also assume that the children of parents with those conditions should also avoid school or college."

TWO SALFORD SCHOOLS HIT BY STAFFING ISSUES

Two Salford schools have announced partial closure due to 'staffing issues' following new Government guidance on the coronavirus. The Holy Family Catholic Primary School has closed two nursery and reception classes 'due to staffing issues', while the pupil referral unit, Alder Brook Primary Partnership Centre, has closed two classes today 'due to staffing issues following new guidance'.

Yesterday saw five Salford schools close for deep cleaning, and the National Education Union has written to the Government asking why schools aren't closing if mass gatherings are to be suspended. Many parents are taking matters into their own hands.

Salford social housing company, Salix Homes, is to close its public reception at Diamond House from tomorrow, 16th March, due to the coronavirus outbreak and is telling residents that if the situation escalates "we may have to put some measures in place to help minimise the risk of further spread".

Meanwhile, Salford's one case of coronavirus is not showing up in official figures, and supermarkets around Salford Precinct and beyond are being stripped of goods.

SALFORD UNIVERSITY SUSPENDS FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING

Salford University has suspended face-to-face teaching, except for final year students and post grads... "In light of the rapidly changing global health situation, we have made the decision to suspend some face-to-face teaching from 16th March" states the University.

Students have reacted favourably, with one stating "Our government is not doing enough! Which is what many experts believe as well. Well done Salford Uni", while another wants the shut-down extended to final year students too.

ELECTORAL COMMISSION RECOMMENDS DELAYING ELECTIONS UNTIL AUTUMN

The May elections for all local councillors in Salford, the election of Salford City Mayor and Greater Manchester Mayor could be cancelled due to coronavirus, after the Electoral Commission wrote to the Government today.

"We cannot be confident that voters will be able to participate in the polls safely and confidently, nor that campaigners and parties will be able to put their case to the electorate" wrote Bob Posner, Chief Executive of the Electoral Commission.

THREE SALFORD PRIMARY SCHOOLS SHUT AS PARENT CONFIRMED WITH CORONAVIRUS

LARK HILL, CHRIST CHURCH AND LEWIS STREET SCHOOLS CLOSED

Three Salford primary schools have been closed until Monday at the earliest after a parent at Lewis Street Primary School was confirmed as having the coronavirus. Christ Church and Lark Hill Community Primary School have also closed as a 'precaution' in order for a deep clean to take place.

One Salford person described the scenes at the school today as 'chaotic', including 'vitriolic racist abuse' towards a Chinese mother.

Meanwhile Salford City Council reveals that there were over 20,000 missed bin collections, and our recycling rate is the third worst in Greater Manchester. But fear not! There's four 'Behaviour Change Officers' about to be employed.

77% OF RESIDENTS LIVING IN GREATER MANCHESTER CLADDED HIGH RISES CONCERNED ABOUT FIRE RISK

HIGH RISE TENANT SURVEY BY SALFORD CITY MAYOR SHOWS FIRE HORROR

A survey of private renters, social renters and owners undertaken by Greater Manchester High Rise Task Force, led by Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, underlines the confusion and potential panic felt by those living in high rise properties and living with the risk of fire.

65% of those responding to the survey said they were concerned about having a fire in their home; 77% of those who lived in blocks with cladding issues were concerned about fire risk; and one third of respondents didn't know evacuation procedures for their building. Residents were also concerned about the effect on their mental health.

SALFORD EURO ARTISTS EXHIBIT AT EARTS FETE 2020

Today, two artists from Poland who have made Salford their home exhibited at EARTS Fete 2020 at Whitworth Locke in Manchester.

Magdalena Kij, now living in Langworthy, displayed a dress 'recycled' from a floor in Upper Camp Street, Broughton, together with one of her trademark masks she makes, sometimes with communities, to highlight hate, environmental issues and human rights.

SWEARING COUNCILLOR TO BE MADE GOVERNOR OF MONTON GREEN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Swearing Eccles Councillor, Mike McCusker, is set to be made a governor of Monton Green Primary School next week, much to the disgust of opposition leader, Les Turner who says "I don't think it's a very good example to set..."

McCusker has been referred to Salford City Council's Monitoring Officer and his own Labour Party Chief Whip for social media comments on 'Tory pigs' and Fine Gael 't***s'.

CORONAVIRUS DETECTING CCTV CAMERAS COMING TO SALFORD?

SMART CCTV CAN DETECT VIRUS

Nope, it's not April Fool's Day. A company is looking to install smart CCTV cameras with built in temperature sensors in workplaces. The smart camera relays data back to the building's security personnel to help isolate those with higher than normal temperature – a key sign of Coronavirus.

"Automating the detection process...is the best form of defence to protect against large offices being shut down completely" says Jonathan Ratcliffe from Offices.co.uk, which is pushing the technology.

GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE HORRENDOUS FAILURES ON CHILD PROTECTION AND DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS

iOPS COMPUTER SYSTEM FAILURES LET DOWN MOST VULNERABLE

A new report out today by the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services, or HMICFRS, lists failures of the Greater Manchester Police computer system, or Integrated Operational Policing System (iOPS), which let down hundreds of vulnerable people in the region.

The report states that system failures led to the number of high risk domestic abuse referrals reducing by more than 50% in some areas, and in one area, only 28% of child protection incidents were referred to children's social care.

SWINTON PARK GOLF CLUB NOT BEEN SOLD TO YOUR HOUSING

NO DEAL BEEN SIGNED TO SELL SWINTON PARK GOLF CLUB

Following a meeting between the Save Swinton Park Golf Club group and Your Housing, potential £10million buyers of the Club, it has been confirmed that the housing group has only signed an option to buy which runs until November.

The campaign group is now urging members and residents to step up the pressure against any potential future planning permission by showing the Salford golf club is a viable business.

WOMEN'S DAY IN SALFORD AND MANCHESTER

To celebrate International Women's Day, there are two events on Saturday 7th March, beginning at 2pm. At Salford's Working Class Movement Library there's an afternoon focusing on Sylvia Pankhurst, with her biographer Katherine Connelly.

At the Friends Meeting House in Manchester, Doctor Who writer, Una McCormack, will be discussing the work of science fiction writers Ursula K. Le Guin and Vonda N. McIntyre in a Mary Quaile Club event.
