UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD ATTEMPTS EXEMPTION FROM FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT

SALFORD UNIVERSITY TRIES TO STOP FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUESTS

The University of Salford has tried to get itself and other universities exempt from the Freedom of Information Act on the grounds that "they are not `Public Authorities'". The bid was made in written evidence to the Justice Committee which is currently scrutinising the Act.

Salford University admits in its evidence that it cost well over £75,000 to stop one Freedom of Information request, while last year, the Information Commissioner found that Salford University had breached the Act five times in its dealings with Salford Star.

PEEL HOLDINGS EMPEROR JOHN WHITTAKER SEES WEALTH GROW BY £100MILLION

Peel Holdings emperor, John Whittaker, saw his personal wealth grow by £100million last year, which puts him at the 29th richest person in Britain and Ireland, according to The Sunday Times Rich List published today.

Whittaker, who's based in the tax exile country of the Isle of Man, is now said to be personally worth £2.175billion – yet Salford tax payers are still throwing millions of pounds at Peel projects like MediaCityUK, Port Salford and the Salford City Stadium.

When the Salford Star tried to contact John Merry, Leader of Salford City Council and a governor at The Albion, he didn't return our call.

Rumours are sweeping East Salford that Charlestown Primary School - shut down last year despite parent protests, warnings from the Salford Star and misgivings from the National Schools Adjudicator - is to re-open to cope with a shortage of primary school places in the city.

Salford Council has bulldozed and merged many primary schools in the city creating the crisis, and is now discussing creating two new schools, plus costs of £850,000 or more to fund extra teachers and classes.

Tapp has also been stopped from handing out leaflets by the new Morrison store across Trafford Road where the streets have now been privatised. Is Salford, home of the BBC, now becoming a democracy free zone?

A new report by Salford City Council shows that even on its own figures Salford people have not been getting decent jobs at MediaCityUK or even at the wider Salford Quays.

At MediaCityUK the vast majority of jobs, as predicted, have been working in security, shops and in part time hotel work. Also, as predicted, the Council report states "A number of companies located at MediaCityUK have re-located from elsewhere and as such have bought a substantial workforce with them"

Until now, developers had to provide 20% affordable housing everywhere in the city where they were building over 25 properties. In the future this won't be the case, as developers cash in to the tune of millions of pounds…
