SALFORD STAR SECURE FOR NEXT SIX MONTHS

The 14 year old Salford Star has received $5,000 from the Google News Initiative Journalism Emergency Relief Fund, set up to support local newsrooms over the whole globe.

This funding, together with regular donations from Mary Monson Solicitors and from an array of readers, means the Star will continue for at least six months.

SALFORD COUNCIL CUTS LOOM FROM VIRUS FALL-OUT

Salford has two new confirmed cases of coronavirus bringing the total to 982, as a new Council report states that its senior team views data on "COVID-19 cases, shielded/vulnerable households, deaths in the city, staffing levels, school attendance and requests coming into our help hub". Why isn't it sharing this information?

The report also states that "If we are unable to manage the [financial] pressures, we will be forced to consider service reductions"...

Salford TUC and the Salford Retired Trade Unionists have pledged support for Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long Bailey who was sacked from the Shadow Cabinet by Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer this week.

The joint statement argues that the Shadow Education Secretary was "disgracefully sacked" as part of a "cynical bid by Starmer...to get rid of a shadow minister..."

SALFORD HAS THREE NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS 336 PEOPLE WITH DISEASE DISCHARGED FROM SALFORD ROYAL HOSPITAL

After four consecutive days of no new confirmed coronavirus cases in Salford, there have been three new ones, taking the total to 980, as Salford Royal Hospital states that it has treated and discharged 336 patients who had the virus.

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, has extended free bus travel for young people who, he says are "at risk of being a lost generation if we don't put in place the support they need now..."

Salford has recorded no new confirmed cases of coronavirus as the total stays at 977 for the fourth consecutive day, although Salford Royal Hospital announced one new sad virus-related death.

Meanwhile new figures from the Office of National Statistics show that male security guards, construction workers and cleaners have the highest virus-related death rates, but 43% of adults reported that some aspects of their lifestyle had changed for the better since the pandemic.

Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long Bailey has been sacked as Shadow Education Secretary by Labour Party Leader, Keir Starmer, this afternoon after re-tweeting a Maxine Peake interview that featured in the Independent.

The actress had said in the interview that "The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd's neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services", an allegation that the paper later wrote was "unfounded".

Salford has recorded no new confirmed cases of coronavirus and no new deaths at Salford Royal Hospital for the third time in four days. Over half of the Greater Manchester areas have also seen no new virus cases.

Meanwhile the economic effects of the pandemic in the region have been laid bare in a new Greater Manchester report which shows a 90% increase in the volume of welfare claims, with a 45% drop in exports from the region.

Salford has recorded no new confirmed cases of coronavirus and no new deaths at Salford Royal Hospital for the second time in three days, although there was one sad virus-related death recorded in a care home in the week of 12th June.

Meanwhile, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority reports the total cost to local authorities of the pandemic by the end of the financial year as £732million, with a net deficit of £368million.

Walkden North councillor and chef, Sammie Bellamy, began baking cakes and cooking meals at the beginning of the coronavirus crisis for a few dozen vulnerable people in the community. But the scheme has since mushroomed to 1,500 meals a week cooked and delivered by an army of volunteers, and leading to the creation of a huge meals on wheels service, For The Love Of Food Salford.

Salford Victoria FC, which plays in the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur Football League, has set up an annual scheme which sees the club's kits donated to amateur teams in regions of Africa that suffer from extreme poverty.

"It's worth it because as well as helping others, it helps us to get the club's name known far and wide" says Salford Victoria Chairman Chris Carney.

Today, a small gathering took place at St Augustine's Church in Pendlebury to remember the Clifton hall Colliery disaster of 18th June 1885 in which an explosion killed 178 people, including young boys. Words were spoken and bouquets laid on the commemorative stone in the churchyard.

Three years after the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, the dangerous cladding on the side of Thorn and Spruce Court in Pendleton is finally being removed – but the Salford Star believes that the blue compound at the base of the blocks is actually built from Reynobond panelling which has a flammable core.

The Star has seen a video of a sample from the panels which caught fire in seconds. When asked about the scenario, Pendleton Together didn't respond but has since either changed the panels or stripped off their identifying marks.

Salford has the third highest average death rate from coronavirus in the country outside London, with 159.9 deaths per 100,000 people, new figures from the Office for National Statistics show. The rate is an average between March and May, but in May itself, the highest number of virus-related deaths in Salford were in Higher Broughton, Weaste and Seedley, and Eccles.

The AJ Bell Stadium, joint owned by Salford City Council and Peel Holdings, could be in financial peril as one of the major current tenants, Sale Sharks, has announced plans to build its own stadium at Crossfield Bridge to 'bring the club home'.

The stadium company, according to the last financial figures available, has debts of £31.84million, including recent loans of £1.32million from its owners.

At next week's remote meeting of Salford City Council, it is being proposed that both the Labour Party and Conservative Party employ 'political assistants' on wages of £34,986 each plus on-costs.

The unelected political assistants will have access to inside information, attend meetings, write speeches and, er, 'monitor the local media'. Basically these are glorified spin doctors paid for out of public money.

BOYSON'S THREATENED THREE SHIPS MURAL CELEBRATED ON CHARITY T-SHIRTS

The late sculptor, Alan Boyson, whose listed Salford work, the Tree of Knowledge, is about to become the centrepiece of a housing project in Charlestown, is currently being celebrated on a charity t-shirt and tote bag with images of his threatened Three Ships mural in Hull by artist Esther Johnson.

Proceeds will go to food banks via the Trussell Trust and FareShare, and a film featuring readings of Philip Larkin's The North Ship is also helping to promote saving the sculpture and the charities.

THOUSANDS ATTEND BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTEST IN MANCHESTER

PROTESTERS PRAISED BY MANC COUNCIL LEADER

Manchester City Council leader, Richard Leese has praised the thousands of people who attended the Black Lives Matter protest in Manchester this afternoon for their "exemplary behaviour", adding that "The discrimination and victimisation of anyone because of their race is an abhorrence that has no place in our world."

The peaceful protest saw a rally and a march through the city centre with people chanting 'Black Lives Matter'...

NORTH WEST R RATE ABOVE ONE AS SALFORD SEES TWO NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES

SALFORD, MANCHESTER ET AL HAVE HIGHEST R RATE IN ENGLAND

The North West, including Salford, Manchester et al, has the highest 'R' rate in England at 1.01, when everywhere else apart from the South West is below 1. The R rate measures the average number of people who could be infected by one person with coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Salford has seen two new cases of the virus, bringing the total to 942, there have been no new deaths at Salford Royal Hospital, and from 15th June, face coverings must be worn on all Greater Manchester public transport.

SALFORD SEES TWO NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AND NO DEATHS

CLIFTON PRIMARY SCHOOL SHUTS AS 'CHILD UNWELL ON PREMISES'

Salford has seen two new cases of coronavirus, taking the total to 940, as, happily, no new deaths are reported at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, Clifton Primary School is closed until next Wednesday 10th June, due to a child being 'unwell on the premises'. Salford City Council states that it's "taking medical advice from public health". It's not known whether this is linked to cornavirus or not.

SALFORD HAS THREE NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AND TWO SAD DEATHS

DESPITE LOCKDOWN EASING VIRUS IS STILL OUT THERE

Salford has three new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the total to 938, as no definite pattern is emerging from which any conclusions can be drawn. There were also two sad deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital yesterday, bringing the total number of virus-related deaths at the hospital to 166.

SALFORD STILL TOPS CORONAVIRUS CARE HOME DEATHS IN GREATER MANCHESTER

FIVE NEW VIRUS CASES IN SALFORD AS CARE HOME DEATHS HIT 122

Salford still tops the sad number of care home coronavirus-related deaths in Greater Manchester with a total of 122 up to 22nd May but registered up to 30th May. That is six more deaths than the previous week. However there were no new deaths reported by Salford Royal Hospital yesterday.

Meanwhile, Salford has five new confirmed cases of the virus, up to 935, from the previous day's 930.

SALFORD TOWERBLOCK CLADDING FINALLY BEING REMOVED BUT PROBLEMS REMAIN

AFTER ALMOST THREE YEARS DANGEROUS CLADDING IS REMOVED

Almost three years after the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, similar dangerous cladding is finally being removed from Spruce Court and Thorn Court in Pendleton.

Tenants are being told to keep windows shut in up to 30 degrees of heat, and one resident told the Salford Star that people in the blocks are "upset and concerned about the quality of care and support they are being given during this work".

SALFORD CORONAVIRUS CASES DECLINE AS COMPANY LAUNCHES TELCO-FRIENDLY FASHION

NO SALFORD VIRUS DEATHS AND REDUCTION IN CASES AS NEW NORMAL FASHION LAUNCHES

Salford has actually recorded a decline in coronavirus cases, with the number reduced by one, down from 931 to 930, while no new deaths have been announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, for the 'new normal', a Finnish company has launched a new range of 'telco-friendly' fashion, 'combining formal upper parts with less formal bottoms into striking outfits' for those virtual meetings where only the top half of the body can be seen!

ONE NEW CORONAVIRUS CASE IN SALFORD AS SCHOOL OPENING RISK ASSESSMENTS SHOW CONCERNS

Salford has just one new confirmed case of coronavirus and no deaths reported by Salford Royal Hospital.

As 33 primary schools are involved in the wider reopening of classes today, Salford National Education Union rep, Judith Elderkin, tells the Salford Star that, of 31 school risk assessments she has read, all had concerns. "Personally, if I had a Y6 or Y1 or Reception child, they would not be going to school yet" she says.
