TEN QUESTIONS ON EVERYTHING FROM PAVEMENT PARKING TO CLIMATE EMERGENCY

A Manchester Friends of the Earth survey on the environment, to which all 105 candidates for this week's Salford City Council election were asked to respond, drew only 23 replies, with no Tory or UKIP candidates responding at all.

Questions ranged from supporting a climate emergency to agreeing that Greater Manchester Pension Fund should fully divest from fossil fuels in the next two years, and whether to support a ban on pavement parking.

This morning, at a very short notice rally at Bexley Square, a massive banner was unfurled stating 'No To Tommy Robinson; No To Fascism', as speakers railed against the far right activist who is making an appearance at Salford Quays this afternoon.

"Tommy Robinson has no place in our community" said MEP Julie Ward, urging people to use their vote in the Euro elections to ensure he is not elected "His politics of hate are a total anathema to everything we believe".

RECYCLED PLASTIC SHIP SETS SAIL FROM SALFORD TO RAISE AWARENESS OF POLLUTION

POLY-ROGER SETS SAIL FROM SALFORD QUAYS

This morning the Poly-Roger, a boat made from plastic waste, set sail from Salford Quays on a UK tour to raise awareness of the growing problem of plastic pollution in the country's rivers and canals.

The Poly-Roger, a twelve-seater punt built using funds from Starbucks' 5p charge on paper cups, is an initiative by environmental charity Hubbub and embarked on a Plastic Fishing Tour, collecting waste plastic from watercourses.

As the local elections stumble towards polling day next Thursday, last night the candidates for the European Election on 23rd May were announced, with nine parties and two independents standing.

While pro and anti Brexit groups feature heavily, amongst the throng are some Salford politicians whose names might be familiar on ballot papers, including Arnold Saunders standing for the Conservatives, Wendy Olsen standing for the Greens and Michael Felse standing for UKIP.

SALFORD COUNCILLOR ANGRY AS ‘CRAZY’ RETIREMENT GIFTS ARRIVE BEFORE LOCAL ELECTION

WEASTE COUNCILLOR WHO IS STANDING IN ELECTION TOLD TO HAND IN I.T. EQUIPMENT AND GIVEN RETIREMENT GIFTS

Weaste Councillor Paul Wilson, who resigned from the Labour Party in February citing 'moral corruption', and has since represented constituents as an Independent, was "angry and disappointed" when he was handed a 'retirement' certificate and gift, despite standing for re-election at next week's local council election.

He was also told to hand back his Council IPad, used for residents' casework, yet other Labour and Conservative councillors standing for re-election don't have to hand anything back and do not receive retirement gifts... "It's crazy" says Councillor Wilson.

HUNDREDS ATTEND SAVE SWINTON PARK GOLF CLUB PUBLIC MEETING

SWINTON GOLF CLUB SALE DRIVEN BY 'SELF INTEREST AND GREED'

Well over two hundred people attended a packed public meeting last night to Save Swinton Park Golf and Country Club, after it came to light that its own investors had approved a sale to Bellway Homes, subject to planning permission, that would see their initial investment increase thirty fold.

Club member, Dave Marsh, told the meeting that the deal was driven by "self interest and greed" and that it was "nothing short of contempt to members". Residents, members and activists vowed to fight any housing development on the site.

JUDGE RULES AGAINST SALFORD HOMELESS SHELTER APPEAL

ECCLES SAVING PEOPLE SHELTER LOSES RIGHT TO APPEAL  POSSESSION ORDER

Yesterday, at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre, the Eccles Saving People Shelter, which has provided a sanctuary for its homeless residents for five months, lost the right to appeal against a possession order by NHS Property Services handed out in January.

The possession order currently comes into effect from 7th May but the Shelter will decide whether to take the case to a higher court within 48 hours. What came out of today's hearing was the role of Salford City Council 'pressing NHS Property Services to bring proceedings', arguing that it could find suitable accommodation for the residents.

Last night, at a Scrutiny Panel 'call-in', both Salford Council Strategic Director, Ben Dolan, and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Paula Boshell, admitted a lack of openness and transparency over the decision to sell the Community Forest Garden site to Urban Splash.

As the call-in was successful, a full consultation was promised and the decision was referred back to Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett, the Salford Star called for resignations, with councillors arguing that a lack of openness is endemic throughout Salford Council.

As part of Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett's 'anti-poverty strategy', funding was found to open two new foodbanks in Eccles and Swinton, and Salford Foodbank states that it was "expecting further funding to sustain the food bank growth but have not received this which mean we will have to drastically cut our services".

It is now appealing for "urgent financial support to prevent having to close the foodbank"...

DESPITE SPECULATION SWINTON GOLF CLUB INSISTS IT HAS NOT BEEN SOLD

As rumours circulate on social media that Swinton Golf Club has been sold to developer Bellway Homes for around £30million, this morning management of the company told the Salford Star that "It's not been sold, there's a lot of Chinese whispers going about at the moment..."

Meanwhile, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has written to the club, expressing his "disappointment...that the future of the Club is in real doubt", and stating that he has been made aware that "a house builder is seeking information about the planning status of the site". A source told the Star that, at a recent meeting, twenty investors approved the sale, subject to planning permission.

URBAN SPLASH £250,000 FOR BLACKFRIARS COMMUNITY FOREST GARDEN SLATED BY COUNCILLORS

After councillors 'called in' the secret land deal between Salford Council and Urban Splash in relation to the Blackfriars community forest garden sale, details have been publicly released, with the developer paying £250,000 for the site, reduced from £350,000 because of flood risks.

The land was originally part of the failed £400,000 Biospheric Foundation project for 'sustainable urban gardening' and, states the councillors' call-in statement, "None of the relevant background information was contained within the officer's report...we do not believe that an accurate and informed decision was made", as they slate the lack of consultation and transparency.

Salix Homes is currently building 108 rent to buy 'affordable' apartments in the grounds of Canon Green Court, whilst refurbishing existing blocks – which is a double whammy for disabled woman Sharon Hooley who is living a drilling, clanging, dusty nightmare and cannot get a decant to another property.

"The whole place is vibrating, and even my dog is having anxiety attacks! I feel like I'm being forced out of my property every time the drilling starts" says Sharon, who has now been forced to seek a Section 184 Homelessness Act move due to her disability, depression and anxiety.

Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has just published its draft Housing Strategy, led by Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett. However, the Strategy accepts that "there is no single agreed definition of affordability, no single agreed point at which housing is 'unaffordable', and an ever wider official definition of 'affordable housing'".

With 'affordable housing' one of Salford's top priority issues, a definitive definition would certainly help!

As Salix Living develops a new 'exclusive' housing scheme within the Poets estate in Swinton, residents are complaining that the company is chopping down mature trees in bird nesting season, which runs from March to August.

"The felled trees...had been used by small nesting birds for years, particularly sparrows and tits" says resident Tracy Holroyd who has submitted data on the birds for BTO Garden Birdwatch "I can't prove that there were nests in those trees – but they can't prove that there weren't..."

The Salford Sainsbury's store on Regent Road was targeted yesterday by campaigners after research by Greenpeace showed that the store is the worst performer on plastic reduction of all major UK supermarkets.

The store's doors were 'decorated' with posters, and shoppers were invited to write messages of disgust to the company.

The candidates for twenty seats in the May 2nd Salford Council local election have been announced, with eight independents standing, many within a newly formed Alliance of Independents, including ex-Labour councillor, Paul Wilson (Weaste), Saving Our Neighbourhood activist, Carol Boyce (Swinton South), and the CORE activists Darren Goulden (Irlam) and Dave Pike (Cadishead).

The Conservative Party, UKIP, Greens and Labour are standing in all twenty wards, with ex LibDem Leader, Norman Owen standing for the Labour Party in Worsley. The LibDems themselves will be fielding eleven candidates.

"It's very disingenuous that this plot of land had the community making it into an orchard...and then it's taken away from the people" a source tells the Salford Star "The last thing we need is another apartment block..."

George Watt, a 63 year old disabled man, has had to go public to seek funds to bury his own father after around £700 of benefits per month were stopped following an assessment, which he is currently appealing.

"He is the most lovely guy, does lots for homeless teams and was homeless himself a number of times" says friend Louise "The DWP has been cruel, taken his car and sanctioned him to the limit, and he can't afford to give his father a send off. His father passed away on St Patrick's Day and is still in the hospital."

BIRD OBESITY TO BE TACKLED AT SALFORD SHOPPING CENTRE

Salford Shopping Centre has taken the extraordinary step of launching a 'pigeon slimming club' to tackle bird obesity, bringing in state of the art technology to avert the problem.

"The pigeons have no self-control and we therefore needed to take drastic measures and not just do something on a wing and a prayer" says Centre Manager Nick Pitt "The only other option is to ask our shoppers to stop feeding the birds, but this slimming club seemed like a more sensible approach."
