Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

VIRUS CASES CREEPING UP IN GM BOROUGHS

Salford has 14 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 6, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.9, down from 32.1. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, eight of ten boroughs of Greater Manchester are currently experiencing a rise in virus rates, including Bolton which currently has a rate of 228.5, compared to Salford's 30.9. Health leaders are continuing to call for caution in people's behaviour if/when restrictions are eased tomorrow.

Greater Manchester charity, Forever Manchester, has given out a staggering £3million to 655 community groups since the start of the pandemic, including to almost one hundred groups in Salford.

Now a new Forever Manchester fund is open called Made By Sport, with grants of £2,021 for community sports groups working with children and young people that have been affected by the pandemic.

INDIAN VARIANT VIRUS CENTRES ON BOLTON AND LONDON

Salford has 15 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 10, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 33.2, down from 35.5. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, Public Health England has revealed that cases of the so-called 'Indian' variant of the virus have increased to 520 from 202 in the country with the majority of cases in London and the North West, predominantly Bolton, which borders Salford.

ANDY BURNHAM STORMS ELECTION FOR GREATER MANCHESTER MAYOR

BURNHAM GETS 67.31% OF VOTE FOR GREATER MANCHESTER MAYOR

The Labour Party's popular Andy Burnham absolutely stormed the election for Greater Manchester Mayor at today's count, polling a massive 67.31% of the vote, or 473,024 votes. His nearest rival, the Conservative's Laura Evans was way behind with 137,753 votes.

A massive 11,743 ballot papers were rejected during the count, and the average turnout for the whole of Greater Manchester was 34.74%.

LABOUR PARTY WALKS SALFORD CITY MAYOR ELECTION

DENNETT GETS 59% OF FIRST PREFERENCE VOTES IN CITY MAYOR ELECTION

Incumbent Paul Dennett walked the election for Salford City Mayor at today's count, as the Labour Party candidate polled over double the votes of his nearest challenger, the Conservative's Arnie Saunders. Dennett took a total of 59% of the first preference votes.

The turnout was again very low, at 28.76%, while almost nine hundred voting slips were rejected.

SALFORD HAS LOWEST TURNOUT IN GREATER MANCHESTER MAYOR ELECTION

JUST 28.77% OF SALFORD ELECTORATE VOTE IN GM MAYOR ELECTION

Salford had the lowest turnout in Greater Manchester for the Greater Manchester Mayor Election, with just 28.77%, or 53,522 verified ballot papers out of an electorate of 186,058. Trafford had the highest turnout with 44.88%, followed by Bury with 40.82%. The results of the GM Mayor Election and the election for Salford City Mayor will be announced later today.

Meanwhile, virus cases are beginning to slowly rise in Salford, with Walkden North and South, and Broughton having the largest increases... ELECTION SEES ANOTHER LOW TURNOUT WITH JUST 19.5% IN LITTLE HULTON

The Labour Party saw off challenges from the Core Independents and the Conservatives to reaffirm its power in Salford, albeit on another low turnout of 28%. In Little Hulton just 19.53% of the electorate voted.

The Labour Party won 52 seats, the Conservatives seven seats and the LibDems one seat. The Core Independents lost their only councillor, while Labour won a seat in Worsley and Westwood Park, and the LibDems won a seat in Kersal and Broughton Park. Two seats were decided by just six votes.

This afternoon, Salford Red Devils fans protested on the steps of the Civic Centre in Swinton as they believe that Salford Council is about to sell the AJ Bell Stadium to Sale Sharks, partnered by Salford City FC.

As well as Salford Council, fans slated Gary Neville, co-owner of Salford City, joint stadium owner Peel Holdings, and Sale Sharks... "It would be an absolute tragedy if we get thrown out" said Peter Brady, Chair of the Salford Reds Supporters Trust "Sale do not want Salford in that stadium it's as simple as that...we can't stand by and let them do that..."

AS LOCKDOWN EASES RATES OF INFECTION CONTINUE TO OSCILLATE

Salford has 11 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 15, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 38.2, down from 41.3. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile the seven day rate of positive cases in the over 60s in Salford has fallen to 12.3 from 14.4, and the number of COVID patients in intensive care has fallen in the region from 26 to 20, although weekly admissions to Greater Manchester hospitals and the number of COVID patients have risen slightly.

LOCAL ONE PARTY STATES ARE 'A GIFT FOR CRONIES AND LOBBYISTS'

A new missive from the Electoral Reform Society warns that "Local one-party fiefdoms plague local government in England – with growing powers often wielded with shrinking oversight. It is a potential gift for lobbyists and shady contractors".

It's an update to a previous report which named Salford as a 'one party dominated' city, and concluded that lack of a proper opposition in local councils is a "cause for concern across England in terms of quality of public services, value for money and government responsiveness to citizen needs". The Society recommends proportional representation to end it all.

153,000 CHILDREN AND SCHOOL STAFF COULD BE SUFFERING WITH LONG COVID

Meanwhile, a coalition of unions, scientists and parents have urged caution around the Government's plans to stop requiring children to wear face coverings in secondary school classrooms from 17th May. A letter to the Education Secretary states that as many as 153,000 children and school staff could already be suffering from Long COVID.

Salford Red Devils supporters are to protest peacefully outside the Civic Centre at 3pm on Thursday 6th May, election day, to highlight the lack of information around the sale of Salford City Council's joint venture AJ Bell stadium and the possible de-homing of the Super League rugby club.

Before the election everything around the potential selling of the stadium to Sale Sharks has gone very quiet. The supporters are determined to change that.

ONLINE LIFE DRAWING EXHIBITION BRINGS TOGETHER GLOBAL ARTISTS

On 10th May, a unique Larger Than Life Drawing exhibition brings together works from around sixty artists, both amateur and professional, from all over the world who have taken part in mad themed online life drawing classes during the pandemic.

Representing Salford is Brenda Hird who helps to run life drawing classes in Eccles and has three pieces being exhibited, and Àgata Alcañiz, a Catalan contemporary artist, who lived in Lower Kersal for many years, ran life drawing classes at Islington Mill and has organised the Life Drawing+ classes during the pandemic.

HUNDREDS OF MANCHESTER AND SALFORD WORKERS MARCH FOR MAY DAY

Hundreds of trade unionists marched from Piccadilly Gardens to Queen's Road depot today for the annual May Day parade and in support of bus drivers at Go North West who have been on strike for two months.

At the subsequent rally, they heard Colin Hayden of Unite say that Go North West, the drivers' employer, has withdrawn its fire and re-hire contracts which caused the longest bus strike in UK history.

CROMWELL ROAD AND BROAD STREET, AND CLIFTON HAVE HIGHEST VIRUS RATES

Salford has 12 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 39.4, up from 37.1. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

While rates in Salford remain low, there are eight areas, including Cromwell Road and Broad Street, and Clifton, with higher than average seven day rolling rates of infection.

KINOFILM 25TH ANNIVERSARY SEES SHORT FILMS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

The Kinofilm Festival of short films has been postponed three times during the pandemic but is now set to launch initially online between 10th and 16th May as around two hundred short films are screened, with in-person screenings to follow in October.

"We now can't wait for everyone to see the amazing films we have lined up" says Festival Director John Wojowski "With the first part of the festival being online this year, it's a chance for everyone to experience the festival, no matter where they're from."

40 YEAR OLDS CAN NOW BOOK JABS

Salford has 14 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 27, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 37.1, up from 36.3. There has been one new virus-related death announced by Salford Royal Hospital, the first for almost three weeks.

Meanwhile, people aged 40 or over can now book a COVID-19 vaccine, as a new NHS comedy video encouraging people to take up the offer stars Lydia West, Liz Hurley, David Walliams, Lenny Henry, Navin Chowdhry and, of course, Elton John.
