While everyone expected Hazel Blears to resign yesterday, she clung on to her Cabinet post saying "I know it will take many months and years for my reputation to recover."

As part of this process, today the Salford Star, on its 3rd Birthday, calls on Salford MP, Hazel Blears, to donate £13,332 to…the Salford Star.

Last night Hazel Blears waved a cheque for £13,332 that she reckons is the amount she would have had to pay in Capital Gains Tax on the sale of her flat in Kennington in 2004. And she intends to pay it straight away. But will the taxman tear it up?

We don't often doff our caps to articles in other publications but we urge everyone to read this piece by Julian Dobson on his Living With Rats blog. It traces the whole history of promises on community empowerment. 

The conclusion is that we're a "long way from the objective a decade ago of enabling communities to do things for themselves. Power resides within public bodies - what communities are encouraged to do is 'shape' and 'influence' rather than get on with what they want to achieve locally".
