Those in the Top Streets of Higher Broughton who had their homes forcibly taken off them by Salford Council never got the true value. Up to £44,000 less than they were worth, we believe.

Now for the first time, the Salford Star has produced a graph which shows, we think, the tens of thousands of pounds difference between what house owners should have got and what they were actually paid.

HOW SALFORD COUNCIL DUPED AND DESTROYED A COMMUNITY – PART 1

Yesterday Salford Council made a decision to spend £350,000 refurbishing six houses in Devonshire Street, Higher Broughton, which are the only original houses left out of over 400 in the Top and Bottom Streets.

Salford Council was supposed to refurbish 23 houses for the community but in April 2009 sent a letter out to residents stating it would cost "up to £130,000 per property" to refurbish and therefore the programme wasn't viable. These latest Council figures show that it is now possible to do the refurbishment for an average of £58,333 per property. So has Salford Council been telling the truth to the now destroyed community?

The Salford Star, again, calls for a Public Inquiry.

But opposition is growing with two public meetings planned by Salford City UNISON against academies…

SALFORD PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS TO BE TOLD `SORT IT OUT YOURSELVES'!

Caring, sharing Salford Council is to make people with mental health problems sort themselves out, as it proposes to axe three community care workers who organise group activities and drop-ins.

The plan is part of a bid to save £80,000 a year. UNISON trade union and the Salford Service User Network have now written to Mayor Ian Stewart asking him to intervene. The Mayor is currently advertising for both a PR person and a Person Assistant at a cost of almost £60,000 a year.

SALFORD MAYOR COULD GET £79,500 WHILE ASSISTANTS GET HUGE PAY RISE 

Salford Mayor, Ian Stewart, could be heading for £79,500 a year if the Independent Panel that decides his salary follows Liverpool's lead.

Meanwhile, following yesterday's Salford Council meeting, there are three less councillors paid on higher levels than basic allowance, but five councillors whose new jobs will be paid £3,500 more than previous similar roles. This at a time when there is a pay freeze across Salford Council

PEEL HOLDINGS TO AXE SECURITY JOBS AT MEDIA CITY

Peel Holdings is to cut security staff at MediaCityUK with a possible loss of up to 20% of jobs, the Salford Star understands. Peel has a security contract with G4S and has informed the company that it is revising its security levels.

This comes in the wake of recent national media attention over perceived crime levels around Salford Quays, where BBC workers were told via e-mail that Salford was "a different kettle of fish" to their London HQ and were offered personal security guards to their cars and trams.

A dignified memorial service was held yesterday by campaigners and relatives of those interred at the controversial Unitarian Burial Ground, at the rear of Swinton Precinct. 

ASDA want to build a new 24hour store on the Precinct and the Burial Ground will be dug up if plans are passed by Salford Council in the coming weeks. Gareth Lyons witnessed the real tears shed at the graves…

New statistics show that unemployment in Salford has risen by almost 20% over the last year, the highest rise in Greater Manchester and over double the national average.

The stats, based on Job Seekers Allowance claimants, show that these highest annual rises in unemployment go across the board, hitting men, women and youth in Salford. Meanwhile, long term unemployment has rocketed by 56% over the last year…

Salford's new Mayor, Ian Stewart, has announced his nine `assistant mayors' who will make up his `new' cabinet. And seven of them already had positions of power in the last administration.

The Deputy Mayor is Councillor David Lancaster, who was also Deputy Leader previously, while there are still places at Salford Council's slightly re-shuffled top table for John Merry, Bill Hinds, Derek Antrobus and Peter Connor. The major casualty is John Warmisham but the message sent out by the underwhelming appointments is `More of the same'…

Lower Broughton's unarmed Anthony Grainger was shot dead by police last March as he sat in a car in Culcheth. Now his family and friends want answers, and have launched a campaign for justice. This Saturday there is a benefit at the Old Pint Pot to raise money for both the campaign and to support his children, which will be followed by a Father's Day protest in June.

SALFORD MAYOR STEWART MEETS HIS MAY DAY MATCH

`THINK MORALITY, JUSTICE AND SECURITY FOR THE PEOPLE OF SALFORD – OR I'LL COME KNOCKING ON YOUR DOOR'

New Salford Mayor, Ian Stewart, got his first ear bashing threat today when he appeared in Bexley Square to address the Salford May Day Rally.

Alice Searle, speaking to the rally on behalf of the Salford Pensioners Association, waved a newspaper from 1942 at the Mayor which announced the birth of the Welfare State. She then warned him not to be "conned by the money" or she would "come knocking on your door".

Over 300 people attended the annual May Day Rally at Bexley Square before marching into Manchester to a further rally in Cathedral Gardens.

PAUL MASSEY TO TAKE ON HAZEL BLEARS AT GENERAL ELECTION

Paul Massey, who failed to defeat Ian Stewart in yesterday's Mayor contest, has vowed to take on Hazel Blears at the next General Election to become Salford MP.

Massey polled almost 2000 votes in the Mayor election, and told the Salford Star that he intends to stand in 2014 either as "part of another party or I'll build my own party…I think it's time for a change."

Blears, who was at the centre of the MPs expenses scandal, might well have met her match…

Salford's new Mayor, Ian Stewart, promised a more open and transparent Council in his first speech yesterday, explaining that Salford politicians need to "learn from the past where our judgement could have been better".

Quoting Salford's city motto, that "The welfare of the people is the highest law", Stewart, who won the new Mayoral office with over double the number of votes of his nearest rival, also promised a "change agenda…designed to meet people's needs". Really?

SALFORD MAYOR IS IAN STEWART

IAN STEWART FIRST ELECTED MAYOR OF SALFORD  

Ian Stewart became Salford's first elected Mayor this afternoon, promising a more open and transparent Council. Stewart polled 46% of all the votes in Round One, just 4% less than the 50% required to avoid a Second Round. 

In the Second Round play off, Stewart amassed more than double the votes of Tory contender Karen Garrido – 23,459 votes to Garrido's 10,071.

The turnout was a shocking 26.05% and almost 3000 voting slips were rejected, more than many of the candidates managed to get in total.

SALFORD LABOUR LANDSLIDE AS LIB DEMS PUNISHED FOR CLEGG

LABOUR GAINS EIGHT SEATS AS LIB DEM LEADER NORMAN OWEN DEFEATED…

A shockingly low turnout of just 26.85% saw Labour gain eight seats in the local election early this morning. The Lib Dems were completely wiped out and now hold no Salford seats, with leader Norman Owen defeated in Claremont. Labour now holds 52 out of 60 seats on the Council

Owen said that the Labour monopoly was "a sad day for the city" and blamed the "Clegg and Cameron factor". Meanwhile Salford Council Leader, John Merry, said that "the people of Salford have sent a very clear message to the Coalition Government".

DEBT, DEPRESSION, POVERTY AND MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS FOR SALFORD PEOPLE AS A RESULT OF GOVERNMENT CUTS, STATES SALFORD COUNCIL REPORT…

A Salford Council report detailing horrific ConDem Government welfare cuts has been seen by the Salford Star. It lists all the changes to be made by the Government's Welfare Reform Act and concludes that the affect will be to "reduce the incomes of many vulnerable groups within the City, particularly families with children, people with disabilities, long-term ill health and those unable to find work".

The report estimates that £28million will be taken from Salford people, with the loss of over 1000 jobs and an increase in debt, depression and mental health. Salford Council is, of course, proposing huge cuts to its Welfare Rights and Debt Advice service, just when people need it most…
