SALFORD COUNCIL REFUSES TO REVEAL PLANNING VIABILITY FIGURES UNDER FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT

Star date: 30th January 2015

AS SALFORD PEOPLE GET SCREWED FOR £MILLIONS BY DEVELOPERS, VIABILITY FIGURES TO REMAIN SECRET

After the Salford Star had publicised the disgrace of developers getting away with paying £millions in planning obligations for putting up huge blocks of flats, even Salford Council's Assistant Mayor for Planning called the practice a "public scandal of immense proportions".

Planners are getting away with it by submitting `viability assessments' showing their profits won't be big enough if they had to pay such fees. The Salford Star asked to see one of these `viability assessments' under the Freedom of Information Act – but Salford Council has refused, stating it's `in the public interest' for them to remain secret. You what?

One hundred years after the birth of Ewan MacColl, what is the legacy of the Salford icon? His traditionalist folk ballads and love songs, classic as some are, almost belong to a bygone era; his agitprop plays were of a bygone moment and the Communist Party to which he belonged is almost extinct in this country.

EWAN MACCOLL – A SALFORD TRIBUTE

PART 2: DIRTY OLD TOWN

Ewan MacColl perceived his home town Salford with a mixture of "love and hate". And he detested what Salford Council had done to the city... `cheap ...nasty...nothing but the worst for the working classes'.

Here, Ewan's third wife, Peggy Seeger, gives a unique insight into his views on Salford and those, like The Pogues, who, he reckoned, had wrecked Dirty Old Town. We also print the missing verse of that song. Plus did Salford Council really make him change the line from `Smelled the spring on the Salford wind'?
