Today the Vodafone store in Manchester was closed by people protesting against the phone company's tax avoidance policies, which they claim has cost the country somewhere between £1and £5billion, while the ConDem Government is making the poor pay for the deficit.

"How can we take the government seriously when they let off tax dodgers?" said campaigner Andi Sidwell "Public sector cuts are not the only way out, there are better ways to save money."

All the Salford Star wanted to know was how much the opera is costing Salford and whether the Council thought it was wise to sponsor the Manc Fest when it's about to make cuts to public services.

SALFORD GPS PRESSURED TO CLOSE HOPE MATERNITY UNIT

SALFORD DOCTORS `PRESSURED' INTO HOPE MATERNITY CLOSURE

Salford's doctors have been `pressured' into backing the closure of Hope Maternity Unit, according to a letter from the Salford Maternity Forum to Government Health Minister Andrew Lansley.

The letter, seen by the Salford Star, adds that the decision to close Hope's birth unit has been made by Salford's health bosses with "breathtaking arrogance". A separate letter accuses the Salford doctors' committee of considering the lives and well-being of Salford mothers and babies as "low priority" and urges it to re-consider its decision "in the interests of safety".

The Forum, made up of mums and midwives, is staging its last battle to save Hope Maternity Unit with an open meeting tonight at the Eccles Gateway.

Salford Council's Planning Committee today gave Tesco the go ahead to build its giant superstore opposite Salford Shopping City.

Chris Beckerman, from Salford Estates which bought the Precinct for £40million earlier this year and had presented councillors with an 8000 signature petition against the Tesco plans, declared the decision "very upsetting" and added "This will inevitably lead to job losses"…

A Salford pupil from Cyces Education has been inspired to draw again after he saw a photo of Joe Coffey's sculpture on the front cover of Salford Media Scene magazine.

Mason, age nine, from Langworthy, copied Joe's image in his own unique style and his picture is now being exhibited at the Langworthy Cornerstone as part of Coffey's increasingly popular HoodLife exhibition.

Last night Joe Coffey's HoodLife exhibition was formally opened at The Cornerstone in Langworthy in a blaze of rap, lightshows and prints selling like hotcakes.

Even Peter Hook tried to get his hands on a print of the Hacienda but they had already sold out.

HoodLife is on until January 2011 and is not to be missed.
