TORY GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES £24MILLION FOR MAINTAINED NURSERIES BUT NOTHING FOR SALFORD

NO NEW GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR SALFORD COUNCIL NURSERIES

Tory Children and Families Minister, Nadhim Zahawi, has announced an extra £24million funding for maintained nursery schools during the next academic year – but no new funding or help for Salford Council's five threatened local authority nurseries.

The Minister, who will be speaking at the Manchester School Readiness Conference today, will also announce more funding to train health visitors to spot children's early language and communication skills. Commenting, GM Mayor Andy Burnham says, the announcement is "good news for our children and families" – unless they live in Salford, of course!

"I say to these fake socialists it's time they look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves who the real socialist is..."

Councillor Paul Wilson, who represents Weaste, sensationally resigned from the Labour Party today at a full meeting of Salford City Council, voting against the Party's budget, citing "fake socialists", "bullying", "factions and patronage", "vanity projects" and a "morally corrupt party"...

"Paul Dennett had joined the old guard of Labour politicians and seemed to have forgotten that he was once opposed to private consultants and expensive homes built at the expense of Salford people" he stated.

SALFORD CITY COUNCIL NURSERIES TO REMAIN OPEN FOR THE ‘FORSEEABLE FUTURE’

NO SUITABLE BIDS FOR NURSERIES SO COUNCIL TO KEEP THEM OPEN WHILE RE-TENDERING

Salford City Council's bid to hive off its five OFSTED rated 'outstanding' nurseries has failed, as no 'suitable bids' were received during a tender process. Now the 'disappointed' and 'frustrated' City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has committed to "keep local day nurseries open under council control for the foreseeable future", and to look at a further re-tender process to find a new provider.

"This is a very good day" states Steven North, UNISON's branch secretary who has supported the Save Our Nurseries Campaign.

SALFORD LIFEWAYS CARE WORKERS DEMAND END TO PRIVATISATION

LIFEWAYS WORKERS LOBBY SALFORD LABOUR GROUP AND MAYOR

Last night, over three dozen care workers currently employed by Lifeways lobbied the Salford Labour Group and Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett to demand their service is brought back in-house at the Council when the contract expires at the end of May.

"Care work is a rewarding job, but it is a difficult job and we deserve respect; we are sick of being messed around" says Melissa Thomas, care worker and UNISON representative for Lifeways workers "We want fair and consistent treatment, so we are demanding that Salford Council listen to us and take us back in-house."

A company which set up and ran a top grotto in the Lowry Outlet during the festive period hasn't paid its elves and Santas around £25,000 in wages, despite being paid by the shopping centre. Company director Tony Jennings, originally planned to liquidate the company but this process has now stopped

"We all loved it, it was a super fun job but a positive has turned into a negative" says elf, Emily Davis "Nobody's really experienced anything like this so we're just, like, 'What do we do?'. He's just left us hanging..." Now a GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for legal action.

NO HOUSES IN BUILE HILL PARK CONFIRMS SALFORD CITY MAYOR

OFF SITE LAND DEVELOPMENT MIGHT PAY FOR MANSION RESTORATION

At a meeting last week of the Buile Hill Mansion Support Group, Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett confirmed that there will be no residential development in the Park as part of a deal to renovate the Mansion.

Meanwhile, Tim Heatley, of developer Capital and Centric, tells the Salford Star that one way of paying for the Mansion restoration would be for Salford City Council to provide land off site from Buile Hill Park, and that the rental would offset the costs.

The racist graffiti on the home of a Salford family has been condemned by Unite Against Fascism (UAF), which is jointly organising the protest against far right Tommy Robinson at Media City this Saturday, 23rd February.

"Worryingly, we are seeing a number of racist attacks, such as the disgraceful graffiti on this family's Salford home" states Paul Jenkins of UAF "These attacks are part of a toxic atmosphere in which all forms of racism are being whipped up." Also backing the protest against Robinson are a host of trade unions and Worsley and Eccles South MP Barbara Keeley.

This afternoon, Salford Councillor Heather Fletcher urged the majority of "tolerant like minded decent people" to stand up to "nasty bigots" at a vigil in Whitefield condemning this week's attack on Philips Park Jewish Cemetery.

At the vigil, supported by Stand Up To Racism, this attack was linked to other racist attacks and the growing threat of the far right. Today, news also broke of an attack on a ten year old black boy's house in Salford.

Salford student, Connor Watson, has raised hundreds of pounds for charities providing mascots, ranging from Paw Patrol characters to daleks and cybermen, through Dalek Operators UK Squadron, while his Pawfect Parties company makes kids events even more fun.

Connor says he was "destined to be the person who carried on the legacy of these characters; the person who said 'You can raise more money for charities, do events and make kids happy'"...

Tomorrow, the City of Salford Sitting Volleyball team will be taking on some of the best teams in the country in the nationwide Grand Prix tournament at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering.

Gareth Lyons caught the team in training at Irlam and Cadishead Leisure Centre where he discovered the game is great for both abled and disabled players.

136 FLATS AND HOUSES FOR PRIVATE RENT ON VITA WORKS SITE WITH NONE AFFORDABLE

Countryside Properties has submitted plans for 136 units of houses and apartments off Seaford Road in Charlestown, and is not proposing to provide any affordable housing, despite Salford City Council policy stating that 20% should be affordable.

The get out, as usual, is a 'viability' assessment, plus the Government's Vacant Building Credit, as the development is to be built on the site of the old British Vita Works. Countryside is also stating that it is "not able to support the full requirement of Section 106 contributions as it would render the delivery of housing on the site unviable".

RESIDENTS IN DANGEROUSLY CLADDED SALFORD BLOCKS TO SEE BIG RENT AND SERVICE CHARGE HIKES

Salford City Council is to increase rents in its Pendleton Together blocks by 3.4%, while service charges are set to rise by 4.97% in high rises, 1.2% in low rises and 5.77% in sheltered accommodation.

Residents in the dangerously cladded towerblocks, Spruce Court and Thorn Court, will see their payments rise by over £250 per year.

Manchester City Council is launching a consultation today to 'promote a safe and welcoming environment across Manchester city centre' – by introducing a Public Space Protection Order, or PSPO, to ban 'Occupying a tent or other temporary structure...', 'Aggressive or intimidating begging' and 'Continuing to obstruct a building entrance/exit, stairwell or highway after being asked to move'.

Salford City Council already has six PSPOs in place, including, controversially banning swearing at Salford Quays.

HOMELESS HEADING BACK TO THE STREETS STATES ECCLES SAVING PEOPLE SHELTER IN OPEN LETTER TO SALFORD CITY COUNCIL AND ANDY BURNHAM

An emotional open letter to GM Mayor Andy Burnham and Salford City Council by residents of the Eccles Saving People Shelter and supporters, accuses the authorities of 'setting us up to fail'.

"We have had nobody return to the streets from the Shelter and that, unfortunately, cannot be said for the 'A bed every night' scheme" the letter states, as it documents the experiences of Shelter residents who have been "offered unsuitable accommodation or no accommodation at all". The letter also accuses Salford Council and NHS Property Services of 'misrepresenting' residents in dealings with the press.

DISABLED SALFORD GIRL CAN’T SKYDIVE SO IS CUTTING OFF HER HAIR FOR CANCER CHARITY

At noon next Saturday, 16th February, 19 year old Courtney Davies, who was born with cerebral palsy and is a wheelchair user, will be getting up to a foot of her hair cut off at Samuel Charles Hair Salon in Walkden to help the Little Princess Trust which make wigs for young cancer sufferers.

"I lost my great gran about a month ago to cancer" says Courtney who is hoping to raise £1,000 for the charity "I can't run a marathon and I can't do a skydive, so I thought I'd do this."

LEAKING ROOF SEES MUSHROOMS GROWING IN CANTEEN RATHER THAN IN GARDEN CENTRE!

The welfare and canteen building at Princes Park Garden Centre in Irlam, which provides opportunities for people with long term learning disabilities and mental health needs, has a roof that is badly leaking.

The grotty, seeping water has forced the closure of both toilets and an office, while mushrooms are growing inside the building, instead of in the garden centre. A Go Fund Me page has now been launched to replace the building.

Winners included Salford design legend Trevor Johnson and community group Eccles Together, while entertainment included trad Indian dance by Salford Malayalee, a DJ set by Dave Haslam and a stunning solo performance by Denise Johnson.

Salford legend and actor Albert Finney has passed away, aged 82. The huge star never forgot his Salford roots, backing the first ever Salford Film Festival with the words "Give my regards to Broad Street..."

Albert Finney starred in everything from Saturday Night Sunday Morning to Erin Brockovich and was five-times nominated for an Oscar..."Albert Finney, aged 82, passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side" reads a statement put out by his family.

NO DEAL BREXIT WOULD COST £2,730 PER SALFORD RESIDENT

UNDER NO DEAL BREXIT, GREATER MANCHESTER ECONOMIC GROWTH WOULD BE £8.2BILLION SMALLER – OR £2,730 PER RESIDENT

A report by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) states that under a no deal Brexit, "Greater Manchester economic growth would be £8.2billion smaller - £2,730 per resident."

Other Brexit scenarios will see the GM economy shrink by between £5.1billion and £1.9billion, according to the report. Meanwhile, exercises have already taken place "to understand the civil contingencies risks and potential impacts".

DISABLED MAN LEFT IN FIRE BLOCK DURING EVACUATION

A few weeks ago, during a small fire at Salix Court – one of the nine dangerously cladded Pendleton blocks owned by Salford City Council – a disabled man with hearing impairments was left in his flat during evacuation by fire marshals, despite management company, Pendleton Together having been informed about his conditions.

Last week, in a statement to the Salford Star, Pendleton Together insisted the evacuation went well "despite some erroneous rumours".

SMASHING BALCONY GLASS JUST MISSED CHILDREN AS SALFORD HOUSING COMPANY DENIED REPORTS OF WINDOWS FALLING OUT OF BLOCK

At Salford City Council meetings and in a letter to Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long-Bailey, Pendleton Together has batted away concerns by residents that windows had fallen out at Holm Court, even confirming that "there had not been any reports of windows having fallen onto the ground".

When the Salford Star confronted Deputy Mayor, John Merry, with proof of glass falling from height at Holm Court, narrowly missing children, he confirmed that it was a glass 'Juliet' balcony that had fallen and not a 'window' as such. Meanwhile, the mother of the children got no apology, just a tenancy warning.

IGAS AND INEOS TO RETURN TO BARTON MOSS FOR SALFORD FRACKING

LICENSE RENEWAL FOR BARTON MOSS FRACKING DUE ON 30TH JUNE

IGas, which caused a storm of protest at Barton Moss with its fracking intentions, has to renew its operating license on 30th June this year. Now that IGas is in bed with INEOS, the Oil and Gas Authority, which lists consents, states that INEOS intends to "submit planning application to drill a well by 30 June 2020, and drill, hydraulically fracture and flow test a well by 30 June 2021".

A petition has been launched to give IGas "the red card from Chat Moss".

NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, OVER £350,000 PLANNING FEES AVOIDED AS HISTORIC SALFORD THEATRE GOES BEFORE PLANNING PANEL

This Thursday, Salford City Council planning panel will consider plans for the controversial conversion of the Grade II listed Crown Theatre in Eccles into 82 apartments plus commercial units.

The scheme will have no affordable housing and over £350,000 planning fees will be avoided by the developer Foregate Limited. Twelve residents and the Theatres Trust have objected to the plans.

Around 1963 Salford lad, Jim Auton, borrowed a classic book called A Handbook of Marxism from Bert Cottam an AEU shop steward at Lankro but subsequently lost the tome much to Bert's ire. By the time it had turned up recently Bert had unfortunately died. Now Jim is trying to track anyone from the Cottam family to return the book..."It has niggled me all these years" says Jim.

At a meeting last night with campaigners trying to save Salford Council's five OFSTED-rated outstanding nurseries, it was disclosed that funding had been found to keep them open under local authority control until April 2020.

"If no further funds can be made available after April 2020 and an alternative provider cannot be found, the nurseries could once again be at risk of closure" states Steven North from Salford City UNISON which has been at the centre of the campaign to save the nurseries.

ECCLES HOMELESS SHELTER RESIDENTS WILL NOT MOVE OUT DESPITE EVICTION ORDER

"I'M GOING NOWHERE BECAUSE I'VE NOWHERE TO GO..."

Residents at the Eccles Saving People Shelter say that they will not be leaving quietly on Monday, despite a judge ordering them to do so yesterday, after ruling in favour of NHS Property Services which owns the old doctor's surgery that has become a homeless refuge.

"I'm going nowhere because I've got nowhere to go" says resident Stacey "They kept promising me 'a bed every night' over and over again, and I've been waiting for over a month now since my initial assessment." Meanwhile, barristers are preparing a legal challenge to the judge's ruling.
