Saturday 1st September Bop Local
Sunday 2nd September One Play One Day

There's a triple headed cultural weekend at The Black Lion, starting tonight, with a `Folkin Brilliant Folk Night', starring Emmott and the Folkestra, and Harp and a Monkey. It's followed on Saturday with Mike Sweeney as guest DJ for the Bop Local night. And Sunday sees One Play One Day, with aim of creating and performing a play in the space of 24 hours.

Both contain historic graves, including those of South African Prince Lobengula, Salford's first MP and founder of the Vegetarian Society, Joseph Brotherton, and the `Salford Poisoner'…

NEVER MIND THE GREEN LANE INCINERATOR HERE COMES PEEL HOLDINGS WITH ANOTHER ONE!

The Planning Inspector finally chucked out plans for a `waste treatment centre' on Green Lane in Monton. This is great news – but a few miles up the road, Peel Holdings is planning a nasty new incinerator on the Trafford side of the Manchester Ship Canal which, campaigners claim, will have major health and environmental affects on Salford.

Will those who campaigned against the Monton plant now join the Breathe Clean Air Group?

A delicatessen, a café and soon to be a bar, the aptly named Deli-Lama is out to create a new Salford vibe. Standing out on The Crescent, at the corner of Bexley Square, the deli-café-bar is aiming to encourage artists to exhibit on its walls, sell local goods and host a few gigs, as well as creating the cutest food fare in town…

Salford City took the first steps to Wembley yesterday, as Yorkshire's Hemsworth Miners Welfare FC felt the full force of an Ammies team two divisions higher up the league pyramid. A wonder effort by Osebi Abadaki, two strikes from Rob Kinsella, and goals by Adrian Bellamy and Chris Thompson sealed the win.

Salford City FC has received sponsorship from Salford Shopping City which will see the logo included on the club's kit and on an advertising board at the Moor Lane stadium.

The Ammies, who play at home in the preliminary round of the FA Cup tomorrow, needs all the sponsorship the club can get – so today the Salford Star is issuing a challenge to all Salford councillors, Mayors and Assistant Mayors…

SALFORD MAYOR TO IMPLEMENT TORY CUTS FOR ALMOST 20,000 PEOPLE…

On Monday, Salford Mayor Ian Stewart is expected to agree a consultation on policy that would effectively pass on ConDem Government cuts for Council Tax benefits to some of the poorest people in Salford.

The Council report which will be seen by the Mayor states that "the funding cuts will have a substantial impact on working age claimants". Will the Mayor pass on the Government cuts? He doesn't need to – the Salford Star has the alternative!

SALFORD CHARLESTOWN SPENDING REVEALED

OVER 70% OF BUDGET FOR NDC LEGACY COMMUNITY GROUP SPENT ON CONSULTANTS, MARKETING, ONE PART TIME WORKER AND A CHAIR

After almost ten weeks Salford Council has finally, sort of, replied to the Salford Star Freedom of Information request surrounding the finances of the Charlestown and Lower Kersal Development Framework Group – the `community led' organisation set up to guard the legacy of the ten year £53million NDC atrocity.

It's not pretty reading… Nearly £43,000 from a budget of £60,000, or over 70%, was spent on staff, consultants and marketing - while only £15,155 was spent on grants for community projects.

Salford City, under new manager Darren Sheridan, began the season today with a home draw against last year's play-off losers Curzon Ashton. Despite being down to ten men, as the referee sent off captain Jimmy Holden, the Ammies held firm to start the Evo-Stik marathon undefeated.

The play is well worth watching and entrance is by donation.

LOWRY OUTLET MALL SOLD AS SALFORD COUNCIL RETAINS LAND…but is it the end of free parking?

The Lowry Outlet Mall, which stands on land owned by Salford Council, has been sold by the Emerson Group to Peel Holdings. The future of the Mall, estimated to bring in around £1million in ground rents to the Council, is uncertain, as Peel plans to massively extend its MediaCityUK operation, while retail space on the Quays is set to increase fivefold.

THE BLACK LION VOWS TO RE-BUILD

A couple of nights ago The Black Lion pub, community arts venue and cinema, was broken into with over £1000 worth of booze nicked, plus charity collection tins and money collected for local artists who sell their work at the pub.

Future Artists, who run the Black Lion on Chapel Street, are asking for Salford's community to support the re-building by popping down for a pint and boosting staff morale, and there's also a top live comedy sketch show on tonight - Davies and Jowett's Comedy Jumble Sale.

Salford Council is to try yet another £3million `new approach' to Whit Lane and Charlestown - after ten years of £53million NDC funding, a zillion masterplans and six months after a vision for the area which might never see the light of day.

Properties bought for demolition and currently tinned up in the community-dubbed `Forgotten Estate' will now be offered back for sale to the original owners, in their "current condition", which we're sure they will be thrilled about…
