ANTI FRACKING CAMPAIGNERS SHUT SWINTON CIVIC CENTRE

Salford Council's Civic Centre in Swinton was dramatically shut down this afternoon as five anti-fracking campaigners from the Barton Moss Protection Camp locked on in the reception area.

The campaigners' action was against Government attempts to bribe Salford Council to allow fracking in the city.

SALFORD STAR BACKS BARTON MOSS POLICING PUBLIC INQUIRY CALL

PUBLIC INQUIRY PETITION DRAWS ALMOST 1000 SIGNATURES IN LESS THAN A DAY 

A call for a judge-led Public Inquiry into the way that Greater Manchester Police has acted at the Barton Moss Community Protection Camp has drawn almost 1,000 signatures in less than a day.

The petition on the official Government website follows over one hundred arrests of anti-fracking campaigners at the IGas exploratory drilling site at Barton Moss. The Salford Star is backing the call for a Public Inquiry.

In an interview with Salford Star, an IGas rep said that fracking fluid "is less radioactive than mineral water". Last night, the BBC showed evidence of "levels of radium ninety times higher than naturally occurs in drinking water".

Someone ain't telling the truth, as Salford becomes not only the front line for fracking in the UK but also the front line for real information. So, will IGas debate publicly with Barton Moss protectors?

The Local Government Association has revealed that Salford families are losing an average of £1,600 a year in benefits due to ConDem Government policies, while those affected by the Bedroom Tax are losing an average of £726.

Meanwhile, 33% of applicants to Salford Council for its discretionary Housing Payments Scheme are being rejected, as poverty takes an even firmer grip in the city. So let's build a new bridge, employ a new Fat Cat and underwrite the Ugly Sisters to the tune of over £4million!

BARTON MOSS SEES HUGE TURNOUT TO SUPPORT ANTI FRACKERS

SALFORD AND BEYOND SHOWS MASSIVE SUPPORT FOR BARTON MOSS CAMP

Around 1,500 people turned out today to show solidarity with the Barton Moss Community Protection Camp – almost double the number of the last rally a few weeks ago.

With one march going from Irlam and another going from Salford City Stadium, the two met up at the entrance to the Camp for a rally with speakers and music, as passing motorists again beeped their horns in support.

The Barton Moss Community Protection Camp has answered what it calls `smears and intimidation' by Greater Manchester Police, which yesterday put out a controversial press statement accusing campaigners of all sorts of odd deeds.

The Camp has called for a massive show of solidarity this Sunday when anti-fracking campaigners from all over the country will be descending on Salford.

ANTI-FRACKING CAMPAIGNERS AND GMP IN OFFICIAL WAR OF WORDS AS ARRESTS MOUNT TO 82.

As images of Greater Manchester Police brutality against a Barton Moss campaigner in Salford were beamed live around the world this week, and as the total number of arrests at Barton Moss hit 82, Frack Free Greater Manchester and the Barton Moss Protection Camp have accused the GMP of being "out of control".

Meanwhile, this morning, GMP Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts said that the "majority of people who are arriving on the site are not there to protest against fracking but are there to disrupt and intimidate the local community and to antagonise police".

MAYOR SENDS SOS TO PUBLIC ON CUTS WHILE TRYING TO FUND £2MILLION MEADOWS BRIDGE

Salford Mayor Ian Stewart yesterday hailed the winner of the £30,000 Meadows Bridge beauty contest, saying that the "iconic" design by Tonkin Liu with Arup would "add to the city's global reputation". The Bridge, which will run from the Crescent to the Meadows has a budget of `up to £1.9million'.

Earlier this week the Mayor sent an SOS - Suggest Our Savings – to Salford Council staff and the public urging them to come up with ideas on how to save money as another £25million of cuts loom.

SALFORD SOCIAL HOUSING RENT HIKE BY ALMOST £20 PER MONTH

SALIX RENTS TO RISE BY 5.13%

Salix Homes rent and service charges are to rise by up to almost £20 a month from April, a Salford Council report reveals.

Social housing rents are to rise by £3.64 a week, while service charges are to rise by up to 83p per week, meaning tenants will have to find an extra £232 per year. This comes on top of the Bedroom Tax and cuts to Council Tax benefits. Meanwhile, the Council reckons it's losing £1million a year in housing rent arrears and bad debts due to the ConDem Government's `welfare reforms'.

DISABLED MAN SUFFERS BROKEN EYE SOCKET AT HANDS OF POLICE IN SALFORD  

"Why are you kicking me?...Oh my head…You've smashed my skull on the ground" Kris during live arrest footage.

Yesterday a protector called Kris at the Barton Moss Community Protection site was left with a broken eye socket and multiple injuries, after Greater Manchester Police arrested him for apparently obstructing them. Kris filmed the whole incident which was streamed live around the world.

Those who attend the daily demonstrations against the IGas exploratory drilling site have taken to holding mirrors up to the police, as in other parts of Europe, to help them reflect on their actions.

Trafford Council's challenge to Peel Holdings' Barton Renewable Energy Plant, or the Davyhulme Incinerator, is to be heard at the Civil Justice Courts in Manchester on 10th and 11th February.

The incinerator, just a toxic breath away from Salford, has been fought all the way by the Breathe Clean Air Group which is also opposing an upcoming fracking-related permit application next door to the incinerator site.

ANTHONY GRAINGER POLICE KILLER ESCAPES CHARGES

NO CHARGES TO BE BROUGHT AGAINST SALFORD MAN'S KILLER – BUT CHIEF CONSTABLE TO BE CHARGED UNDER HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK

The family of Broughton's Anthony Grainger, shot dead by Greater Manchester Police in March 2012, today declared that they were "bitterly disappointed that the Officer that shot Anthony will not face criminal proceedings".

While the police officer himself escapes charges, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Sir Peter Fahy, is to be charged under the Health and Safety at Work Act – although he doesn't have to appear in court.

Around 150 people laid siege to Salford Civic Centre today as Mayor Ian Stewart got a meeting of the full council to rubber stamp approval for the appointment of a new £150,000 Fat Cat `Head of Paid Services', while announcing cuts of £24.5million and the loss of 300 jobs.

Councillors going into the meeting ran a gauntlet of trade unionists and anti-frackers shouting `Shame on you…Shame on you'…

Over eight hundred people marched from Salford City Stadium to the Barton Moss Community Protection Camp this afternoon as part of a Solidarity Day with the anti-fracking campaign in Salford.

All afternoon local people in passing cars tooted their horns in support of the protest, while a Salford City UNISON speaker derided the national press over its coverage of the Camp.

After Salford Council ditched former Chief Executive Barbara Spicer and her exorbitant £175,000 salary (plus add ons), Mayor Ian Stewart is set to appoint a new `Head of Paid Service' on a wage range of between £144,702 to £150,489 (plus add ons).

This, despite announcing £24.5million cuts yesterday aimed at the most vulnerable people in the city – and despite originally hinting that a new Council manager would cost around £70,000.

Children's Services and Adult Services - with budgets axed by a total £10.3million - are taking the brunt of Salford Council's £24.5million cuts for the 2014-15 financial year. Also going is a children's home, the Tourist Information Centre at The Lowry and budgets for helping the most vulnerable people in the city.

Salford City UNISON has declared the cuts "devastating", adding that "we cannot and will not rule out any action in opposition to these cuts".

Greater Manchester Police has found no evidence suggesting that anyone from the Barton Moss Community Protection Camp fired a flare at the police helicopter over the weekend, despite a press release sent out by the Force and subsequent high profile mainstream media coverage which seemed to point the finger at the campaigners.

Meanwhile, this morning lorries are being delayed further with two women locked on to a car at the entrance to the IGas drilling site.
