SALFORD VICTORIA THEATRE STILL HIGH ON AT RISK REGISTER BUT HOPE IS IN THE AIR

RESTORATION OF LOWER BROUGHTON THEATRE 'WOULD NOT BE UNACHIEVABLE'

The Grade 2 listed Victoria Theatre has been placed as the joint second most 'at risk' theatre in the country by the Theatres Trust, with an in peril score of eight out of nine.

However, consultants currently working on the viability of restoring the Lower Broughton theatre state that "it is unlikely that any other project could make such a positive contribution to regenerating and improving that part of Salford", while the Theatre's campaigners add that "the funds required to restore the building would not be unachievable".

A planning application will be heard by Salford City Council next week for two 14 and 17 storey blocks of 280 apartments to be built at MediaCityUK on the current car park next to Booths.

Despite Salford Council's new 'refreshed' planning policy there will be no affordable housing required nor any planning fees for public realm, infrastructure etc.

CONTROVERSIAL SALFORD DEVELOPMENT TO GET £2.6MILLION PUBLIC MONEY LOAN

GREATER MANCHESTER TO LOAN BOOTHSTOWN DEVELOPMENT £2.6MILLION

A controversial development of twenty detached and semi-detached houses by Mulbury Homes in Boothstown is earmarked to get a public money loan of £2.671million from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, or GMCA, this week.

The development brought 23 objections from local residents when it got planning permission last month from Salford City Council, mainly concerning loss of green space and traffic problems.

COMIC POET TONY KINSELLA SCOOPS STAR AWARD

Tony Kinsella has won the Salford Star Best Performer Award for 2019 for some unique shows, including one about The Undertones, one about sixties girl group The Shangri-Las and one about cult left wing German footie club FC Pauli.

Salford Star Live Editor, Ian Leslie, describes Tony as a 'sharp, informative and uniquely off-the-wall comic poet', as he chats with him about winning the well deserved Best Performer Award.

AJ BELL PRESENTS SPEEDO MICK WITH £50,000 CHEQUE

For ages, Everton supporting Speedo Mick has been collecting funds for his Leave The Light On charity wearing just a pair of Speedos and a blue and white scarf, and in the process has become a Goodison legend.

This week, Mick passed through Manchester as part of his charity walk in familiar garb from John o'Groats to Lands End, and was met by Salford company AJ Bell's Kirsty Wardlaw, who presented him with a cheque for £50,000 from the AJ Bell Trust.

Walking Football adults with learning difficulties were presented with new football shirts this week as part of the ongoing success of a new project initiated by Princes Park Garden Centre.

"This project has been and is an amazing success" says Alec McFadden, of the Centre "All of our service users love their weekly football...But most of all, the massive improvement in their confidence is improving their quality of life."

ONLY 7.6% OF HOUSES BUILT IN SALFORD CLASSED AS ‘AFFORDABLE’

SALFORD HAS SECOND LOWEST PROPORTION OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPLETIONS IN GREATER MANCHESTER

A new report being discussed today by the Greater Manchester Planning and Housing Commission, chaired by Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett, reveals that Salford had the second lowest completion of affordable housing in Greater Manchester last year.

Just 7.6% of all properties built were classed as 'affordable', compared to almost double that in Manchester and 36.5% in Bury.

SEEDLEY AND LANGWORTHY TRUST GOT £THOUSANDS OF SHOP INCOME WITH NO PAPERWORK

The Seedley and Langworthy Trust, or SALT, has received rental from at least two shops owned by Salford City Council on Langworthy Road since 2007, one of which is now the HQ of Salford MP Rebecca Long Bailey.

The income is estimated at over £100,000 - around £12,600 per year – but there was no formal contract or agreement between the Council and SALT. Nor did anyone actually have to submit reports on how the income was used.

'INTERNAL CONTROL DEFICIENCIES' AS COUNCILLORS IGNORE REGISTER OF INTERESTS

Salford City Council auditor, Mazars, has written an official letter to the Council pointing out 'internal control deficiencies', in that one third of the city's councillors did not complete their annual declarations of interests.

Senior officers are also supposed to disclose their interests but the Salford Star can find no record of this being publicly available.

SALFORD AJ BELL STADIUM TO GET FURTHER £1.32MILLION LOAN

STADIUM DEBT TO RISE TO £31.84MILLION AS NEW LOANS SOUGHT

Salford City Council and Peel Holdings, the joint venture partners of the City of Salford Community Stadium Ltd, or the AJ Bell stadium, are poised to provide a further £1.32million in loans to keep the company afloat, bringing the estimated total outstanding debt to £31.84million by the end of March this year.

This is the debt after a plot of land near the Stadium was sold to Aldi for £1.183million, and a report discloses that any interest that Salford Council makes on the loans does not go into providing services but instead is squirreled into a reserve fund "to compensate the council for the risk of default"...

The Woolpack pub on Belvedere Road in Pendleton, which shut in 2008 but was earmarked for other various hubs, is to be demolished this week.

"The existing building is in a poor state of repair and is surplus to requirements" states a Salford City Council report "Due to its age the building is not attractive to potential tenants due to its high maintenance and running costs..."

Salford schools and their pupils are being encouraged to take part in this year's Show Racism the Red Card competition that launches this week with the backing of loads of footballers and sports stars.

Young people just need to produce original creative designs on the theme of anti-racism using a range of formats from artwork, creative writing and film, to fashion designs and music.

SALFORD STADIUM OWING £31MILLION IN LOANS IS "A REALLY GOOD NEWS STORY" SAYS MAYOR

At this week's full meeting of Salford City Council, Mayor Paul Dennett, in answer to a question about £2million losses at its AJ Bell Stadium replied that it is "actually a great success" and a "really good news story".

Latest accounts for the Stadium, joint owned by Salford Council and Peel Holdings, showed that the Council is owed over £25million in loans, while creditors were owed over £33million. The Mayor revealed that more public money loans to the Stadium were imminent.

Salford City Council made sure everyone knew about its 'refreshed' planning policy that would end the scandal of developers avoiding the provision of affordable housing. It also promised that the 'viability assessments' which help the developers avoidance tactics would be made public.

The first planning meeting since these changes takes place next week – with one affordable house offered for almost 1,000 properties seeking planning permission in Ordsall and Greengate. And no publication of the viability assessments.

Wow! Fred Done's company, Salboy, is actually going to be providing 20%, or 25 affordable housing units, in his new 17 storey building on Queen Street in Greengate, according to a planning application submitted to Salford City Council.

Done's previous two huge apartment schemes in Blackfriars and on the Crescent, produced no affordable housing and one was actually subsidised by public money.

AJ BELL STADIUM DEFICIT CONTINUES WITH CREDITORS OWED OVER £33MILLION

Accounts released this week for the City of Salford Community Stadium, known as the AJ Bell Stadium, reveal a loss for the financial year ending March 2019 of £1.973million, with creditors owed over £33million.

The Stadium, joint owned by Salford City Council and Peel Holdings, still owes the Council £19.105million for a development loan, plus £6.05million to each joint venture partner for other ongoing loans.

Meanwhile, Louise Morrissey, Peel's director of land and planning, who was involved in the case has had her directorship terminated by the company, along with others, as profits have collapsed in various Peel offshoots.
