MAY DAY ONLINE RALLY AND PHYSICAL KILL THE BILL DEMO
MONDAY MARCH AND RALLY TO SUPPORT STRIKING BUS WORKERS

May Day this year will see three separate events, beginning with an  online rally at 1pm Saturday 1st May, followed by a physical Kill The Bill Demo in St Peter's Square at 4pm, followed on Monday 3rd May at 11am by a march from Piccadilly Gardens to the Queen's Road bus depot to support striking Go North West workers.

Salford has 27 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 11, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 36.3, up from 34.8. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, in the whole of Greater Manchester, just eight COVID patients were admitted to all hospitals in the week ending 27th April.

SALFORD COMMUNITY GUTTED AS SHALIMAR SHOP SHUTS IN FACE OF ‘REGENERATION’

MO'S SHALIMAR SHOP TO SHUT AFTER ALMOST 40 YEARS SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

The Shalimar convenience store on Chapel Street, which has served the Islington community for almost 40 years, is set to close on Sunday 2nd May.

The shop, which saw community protests a few years ago when the English Cities fund refused to allow owner, Mo, a unit in the new Vimto development, has constantly fought against closure in the face of the area's gentrification. Now that the 'front line' is going, residents will be worried about the fate of the rest of the estate.

Salford has 11 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 15, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 34.8, up from 33.6. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital for the 18th day in a row.

Meanwhile, yesterday, a court ruled that online council meetings must end after 7th May, with Salford politicians unhappy at the judgement.

Every year, citizens and journalists have the right to inspect their local council's accounts and any related documents, and object to spending which they believe is not in the public interest.

A new report called Democracy Denied: Audit and accountability failure in local government looks in depth at how this works in practice and concludes that it "undermines local democracy", including in Salford.

Salford has 15 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 17, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 33.6, up from 32.8. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital. Those aged 42 and 43 are now being invited for a jab.

Meanwhile, today is International Workers Memorial Day, and North West UNISON is remembering its 55 working members who have died as a result of COVID-19. There is also an online event from 11:55am with speakers including Salford MP Rebecca Long Bailey, and Salford UNISON's Ameen Hadi..."More than ever, remember the dead, fight for the living" states the union.

Over the last two weeks in Salford there were more coronavirus cases in females aged 20 to 29 than any other age group, with the highest number of cases in males aged 30 to 39. Meanwhile, a petition has been launched to publish numbers of people with long COVID.

Meanwhile latest data shows that just 16 COVID patients were admitted to Greater Manchester hospitals in the week ended 20th April, while Salford's over 60s currently have the lowest 7 day rate of cases per 100,000 population in the region at 6.2.

SALFORD CITY COUNCIL NOT PAID PRECINCT CONTRACTOR FOR MONTHS AS WORKS GO Ł1.2MILLION OVER BUDGET

Since November 2020, Salford City Council has been unable to pay contractor Eurovia additional costs of Ł1.265million for work on improvements to highway infrastructure, subways, landscaping and lighting around Salford Precinct.

The original total costs for the works was for Ł3.14million, paid via Greater Manchester Growth Deal funding, but due to the pandemic, 'drainage redesign' and knotweed, the cost has mushroomed to Ł4.4million, and the Council might have to stump up the extra costs from its own budget.

The Ł35million RHS Garden Bridgewater is to open on 18th May, and tickets go on sale tomorrow, 19th April, with Salford people getting free access on Tuesdays for the first year, after a massive Ł19million investment by Salford City Council.

The big question is whether the promised boycott by Salford people, following the horrendous deer cull by the RHS last year, will happen.

Salford has 10 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 8, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 38.6, down from 39.4. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital for the fifth day in a row.

On 14th April there were forty COVID-19 patients in Salford Royal, compared to almost double that figure a month ago. Meanwhile, Salford's Director of Public Health expects cases to start rising again within the next few weeks, following easing of the lockdown.

Meanwhile, people aged 45 and over can now obtain a vaccination..."We've now delivered a first dose to over 32 million people and are on track to offer a vaccine to all adults by the end of July" Matt Hancock told the House of Commons yesterday.

Meanwhile, 19 out of 20 of those most at risk from the virus have now been vaccinated, and, today, the Moderna vaccine comes into use which will provide an alternative to the AstraZeneca jab for those aged 18 to 29.

LESS THAN TEN HEALTHY PATIENTS HAVE DIED OF COVID-19 AT SALFORD ROYAL HOSPITAL

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION RESPONSE SHOWS VERY SMALL NUMBER OF COVID DEATHS IN THOSE WITH NO UNDERLYING HEALTH CONDITIONS

A Freedom of Information response from the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group, shows that the total number of patients who have died with a positive COVID-19 test within 28 days of their death with no previous existing health conditions between March and 8th December 2020 at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust is less than ten.

The Salford Public Health Director says there are reasons for this, including that Salford Royal admits more patients with complex conditions than other hospitals.

VENICE ARTISTS MYSTERY IN JOHN HARDING NOVEL

John Harding, known to many in Salford as the author of the ace Shelagh Delaney biography, Sweetly Sings Delaney, has his first novel out, The House with Three Eyes, a mystery featuring an old rock star, the death of a world famous artist and the ingénue ecology student caught up in page turning, police siren screaming, model and muse malarkey macabrism, set against the watery magnificence of Venice.

NEW SALFORD BIKE PARK IN LITTLE HULTON NEEDS VITAL ACCESS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

SUPPORT NEEDED FOR DISABLED YOUNG PEOPLE'S CYCLE LESSONS

The old bowling green at Peel Park in Little Hulton, is currently being turned into a new bike park, to give young people a safe space to cycle and skate. While the track is paid for, the Access Sport charity is fundraising to teach 150 disabled young people to ride a bike, or improve their cycling skills, by bringing in specialist coaching and equipment.

SALFORD HAS 19 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS CITY HAS LOWEST INFECTION RATE IN GREATER MANCHESTER

SALFORD INFECTION RATE NOW 34.8 – LOWEST IN REGION

Salford has 19 new coronavirus cases, up from nil the previous day when there was a readjustment of statistics. Meanwhile the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 34.8, down from 44, and is currently the lowest in Greater Manchester. There have been two new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Salford Red Devils put aside any fears about the sale of the AJ Bell Stadium to crush Widnes Vikings 68-4 in this year's Challenge Cup. Salford were expected to win against lowly opponents but still put in an impressive performance as Gareth Lyons reports.

SALFORD LOCAL ELECTION SEES 172 CANDIDATES STANDING IN TWENTY WARDS

20 WARDS HAVE 60 SEATS UP FOR GRABS

172 candidates will be standing in the local council election on 6th May vying for sixty seats in twenty wards, including a few new ones. As well as the four main parties, there are nine Independents standing, plus four Core Independents, one TUSC and one Women's Equality Party candidate.

Ex Labour Party councillor, Howard Balkind is standing for the Green Party, while former LibDem councillors Mary Ferrer and Joe O'Neill are giving it another shot as Independents.

SALFORD HAS NO OFFICIAL NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS REPORTING CHANGES DECREASE NUMBERS

REPORTING CHANGES DECREASE SALFORD CASES

Salford officially has no new coronavirus cases as there have been changes to reporting and a "revision of historical case data in England" states the Government. So Salford actually had 15 cases but had 32 historical cases removed.

All of which leaves the seven day average of cases in Salford at 114, down from 139, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 44, down from 53.7. There have been no new deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

NINE CANDIDATES FOR GREATER MANCHESTER MAYOR

Current Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, is to face eight other candidates in the 6th May election, including retired Greater Manchester Police Inspector David Sutcliffe. As well as the four main parties, there are three Independents, plus the Reform Party and English Democrats standing. None of the candidates are from Salford.

Stephen Ord, the Labour councillor, who alleged the 'local government scandal of the decade' at a full meeting of Salford Council before resigning, is to stand as an Independent candidate for Salford City Mayor.

Stephen Ord joins the race alongside the four main parties plus a Republic Party candidate, and tells the Salford Star that current Labour Party Mayor, Paul Dennett "has been captured by the establishment, and reprogrammed quicker than a Stepford Wife"...

SALFORD HAS 16 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS CONTINUE TO FALL

JUST 34 COVID PATIENTS ADMITTED TO ALL GREATER MANCHESTER HOSPITALS

Salford has 16 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 8, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 53.7, down from 59.5. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, just 34 COVID patients were admitted to all Greater Manchester hospitals in the week ended 6th April, as the pressure continues to ease for the NHS.

SALFORD CITY COUNCIL COULD SELL AJ BELL STADIUM

NO ACCOUNTS FOR SALFORD COUNCIL STADIUM WHICH COULD BE SOLD TO SALE SHARKS AND SALFORD CITY FC

After zillions of social media rumours that Sale Sharks and Salford City FC have put in a joint bid to buy the loss-making AJ Bell Stadium, owned jointly by Salford Council and Peel Holdings, today the Council and Salford Red Devils issued a joint statement confirming that an approach to buy the stadium has been made and that the Red Devils are also considering a bid.

The accounts for the City of Salford Community Stadium Ltd are now overdue and the company has not approached the Council for its annual loan to keep it from going bust.

Andy Burnham, standing for re-election as Greater Manchester Mayor, yesterday slammed the bosses of Go North West, currently in a 'fire and re-hire' dispute with bus drivers...

"I do not believe that the way in which this has been handled by Go is right...I do not believe the Go North West drivers have been treated fairly" he said, adding that he would not allow bus franchising in Greater Manchester to be a "race to the bottom" for employment standards.

Meanwhile, Andy Burnham, currently standing to be re-elected Greater Manchester Mayor, said yesterday that he backs vaccine passport pilots as the region thrives on live events, music and sport..."We have a real strong interest in allowing those events to return as quickly as possible."
