Salford Star award winner, Brian Gorman, has a new exhibition of paintings and drawings featuring the 'magic' characters he has met in Ashton-Under-Lyne, together with some of his ace pictures of Mark E Smith, Ian Curtis, Peter Hook, Joy Division and other assorted Salford folk.

The exhibition, at the Top End Bar, Ashton, runs until the end of November but with a lockdown looming it's best to get down there now.

SALFORD HAS 284 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS SECOND LOCKDOWN LOOMS

SECOND NATIONAL LOCKDOWN ON THE CARDS...

Salford has 284 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the cumulative total to 8,611. As the number of daily cases continue to rise to record levels in the city, the seven day rate of cases per 100,000 people, which lags a few days behind the daily figure, continues to decline and is now 612.4, down from 617. There have been two new virus-related deaths announced at Salford Royal Hospital.

With The Times today reporting a second national lockdown to be announced on Monday (bar essential shops and education settings), Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, said yesterday "We can't have a national lockdown when it's London and the South that has the highest number of cases, but a regional lockdown when it's the North."

SALFORD HAS 280 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS RATES DECREASE IN HALF OF GREATER MANCHESTER BOROUGHS

SALFORD CASE NUMBERS AND RATES DECLINE SLIGHTLY

Salford has 280 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the cumulative total to 8,327. Over the last seven days of data there have been 1,598 cases, down from 1,611, with a case rate per 100,000 population of 617.4, which is down from 622.4. There have been two further virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Altogether, half of the Greater Manchester boroughs have seen a slight reduction in cases and rates over the last seven days of data – but this is just one day of data and things could change overnight. Meanwhile, the Regional Director of the World Health organisation says that the "greatest concern" at the moment is the "exhausted" health workforce.

OVER 100 SALFORD COUNCIL SOCIAL RENT PROPERTIES APPROVED FOR PLANNING IN ORDSALL AND CLIFTON

SALFORD COUNCILLORS IGNORE ORDSALL RESIDENTS' GREEN SPACE PLEA AS PLANNING APPROVAL PASSED

The Salford City Council Planning Panel of councillors this morning approved over one hundred social rent properties in Ordsall and Clifton, the first to be built by the Council for over ten years.

While planning for developments on Clifton Green and Ryall Avenue in Ordsall were passed without objections in the meeting, a plan to put twelve houses on "the last safe space in Ordsall" used by children on Brassington Avenue, was fiercely opposed by residents, to no avail, with local councillor Ray Mashiter actually speaking against the residents...

SALFORD HAS 227 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS NORTH WEST HOSPITALISATIONS INCREASE

SALFORD 7 DAY CASE RATE PER 100,000 POPULATION HITS 622.4

Salford has 227 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the cumulative total to 8,047, with 1,611 cases in the last seven days of data and a case rate per 100,000 population of 622.4. There have been three new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

In the North West, 335 COVID patients were admitted to hospitals on the latest data day, 25th October, and on 27th October there were almost 2,500 COVID patients in hospitals, 212 of whom were on ventilators. Looking at the patterns, very soon these figures could reach the peaks of April.

SALFORD HAS 293 NEW VIRUS CASES

Salford has 293 new confirmed coronavirus cases bringing the cumulative total to 7,820. It's the highest recorded number of new daily cases since the start of the pandemic, although Pillar 1 and 2 cases have only been counted jointly since the start of July.

Salford has had 1,525 cases of coronavirus during the last seven days of data, with a case rate per 100,000 of 589.2. There has been one new virus-related death announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Comparing the Government tactics on tackling COVID-19 to his own rubbish time as manager of Valencia, Salford City co-owner Gary Neville said today that "they're changing the system every single week, they're changing the tactics every single week, and the players don't quite know what they're doing; and we're the players".

Neville was speaking at the launch of #oneGM, a new initiative that hopes to help businesses, the voluntary sector and individuals affected by the virus... "It's about creating a new mood, a more positive, practical mood in Greater Manchester" said GM Mayor, Andy Burnham.

Salford has 243 new confirmed cases of coronavirus bringing the cumulative total to 7,527, with 1,483 cases in the last seven days of data and a case rate per 100,000 of 573. There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, the campaign to feed hungry children over half term is intensifying with two websites giving names of businesses, services and organisations offering meals, while there's also a Don't Let Our Kids Starve demo this Saturday, while Salford and Eccles MP, Rebecca Long Bailey will speak at a related online People Before Profit rally.

UP TO 1,400 HOUSES PROPOSED ON SALFORD GREEN BELT IN IRLAM BY GREATER MANCHESTER SPATIAL FRAMEWORK

SALFORD GREEN BELT IN IRLAM, BOOTHSTOWN AND MORE TO BE STRIPPED FOR HOUSING AND INDUSTRY

'Altogether the loss of the city's Green Belt will provide 262 truly affordable properties out of 2,000 proposed...'

The much awaited final draft of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework has been published with proposals for Salford Green Belt land to disappear in Irlam, Boothstown, Barton and Little Hulton for housing and industry. The land north of Irlam Station is earmarked for up to 1,400 houses.

Meanwhile, land at the West Salford Greenway plus four other sites are destined to be added to the city's Green Belt, while over the next 17 years, 12,500 new properties could be built at Salford Quays, and a "vast urban forest close to the City Centre" is also on the cards.

SALFORD ROYAL HOSPITAL VIRUS ADMISSIONS INCREASE 191%

Salford has 207 new confirmed coronavirus cases, bringing the cumulative total to 7,284, with 1,428 new cases in the last seven days of data, and a rate per 100,000 people of 551.7. Only four areas of Salford now have a case rate below 400 per 100,000 people.

There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital but COVID-19 admissions have risen from 24 in the first nine days of the month, to 70 in the following nine days to 18th October, an increase of 191%.

CHRIS DIFFORD'S SONG CLUB ALBUM FEATURES GRAHAM GOULDMAN TRACK

Salford star Graham Gouldman has donated a track called I See You to a new Song Club compilation album curated by Chris Difford. The songs have all been inspired by photos of front line NHS staff by nurse Hannah Grace Deller, and proceeds are going to the Royal College of Nursing Foundation COVID-19 Support Fund.

The album also features tracks by Nick Heyward, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Mark Nevin, Julia Fordham, Robert Vincent and Judie Tzuke.

ERRATIC CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES 'IS NOT AN OPTION' STATES TEACHERS' UNION

Salford has 223 new confirmed cases of coronavirus bringing the cumulative total to 7,077 and the case rate per 100,000 population to 518.1. There have been two new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, the teachers' union, NEU, has called for the Government to explore a rota system for school and college openings as the "increased erratic closure of schools and colleges is not an option". GM Mayor, Andy Burnham, has also issued a statement saying that the region has now got more money from the Government than the £65million requested.

Meanwhile, following the Government rejection of Marcus Rashford's plea to feed hungry children over the holidays, Salford City Council is to provide £10 per week for every child currently in receipt of free school meals for the half term and Christmas. The Spirit of Salford Network will be looking to raise £20,000 from the community to help fund the scheme.

NUMBER OF SERIOUSLY ILL COVID PATIENTS RISES SHARPLY IN NORTH WEST

As Greater Manchester moves into Very High Alert level restrictions today, Salford has 186 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the cumulative total to 6,677. There have been three new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital, as the number of COVID patients admitted to hospital and on ventilators in the North West has risen sharply over the last month.

Meanwhile, pupils in a Year 5 bubble at Lark Hill Community Primary School are self-isolating, while St Patrick's RC High School in Eccles has cases in Year 8, 10 and 11. And the backlash against Boris continues with banners strung across the region's bridges.

ACORN COMMUNITY UNION MEMBERS STAGE PROTESTS IN SWINTON AND CHAPEL STREET

Members of ACORN community union protested outside Thornley Groves letting agents offices on Chapel Street, in Swinton, in Sale and in Manchester today to protect tenants who were on furlough during the coronavirus crisis from an ongoing eviction threat.

Nancy Hughes, of ACORN Manchester, slated the company for its "heartless attitude towards renters in Salford and Manchester who have been financially impacted by COVID-19..."

OVER 50% CHILD POVERTY IN FIVE SALFORD WARDS AFTER HOUSING COSTS

SALFORD REGENERATION WARDS HAVE HIGHEST LEVELS OF CHILD POVERTY

A new interactive map of Salford produced by Greater Manchester Poverty Action shows five wards in the city with over fifty per cent child poverty after housing costs. Highest is Ordsall with almost sixty per cent child poverty, followed by Broughton and Kersal.

It seems no coincidence that the five wards with the highest child poverty after housing costs are those that were at the centre of the city's so-called regeneration housing programmes over the last decade.

SALFORD COUNCIL TURNS PUFFIN CROSSINGS LGBTQ+ RAINBOW

Salford City Council receives loads of petitions every year which normally get binned – but it has responded positively to one that no-one ever signed, not even the bloke who created it.

Now, two puffin crossings on the Crescent outside Salford University have turned rainbow to celebrate Pride in the city..."At the end of the day I'm just happy that the rainbow crossings have been done" says Kevin DeVulder who came up with the idea and launched the petition.

SALFORD RESIDENTS IN DE-CLADDED PENDLETON BLOCKS OFFERED LESS THAN £1 PER DAY FOR EXTRA HEAT BILLS

Pendleton Together, which manages nine blocks of flats for Salford City Council, is offering less than £1 per day to residents to cover extra heating bills this winter with the insulated but dangerous cladding removed from the outer walls.

"The amount being offered in compensation is appalling" says one tenant "Not only are residents still struggling with the expense of running the NIBE systems, they now have to contend with them running overtime during the winter period."

Meanwhile, the war of words around Tier 3 restrictions continues with a leak this morning showing that by last Friday "the resurgence of the disease had left hospitals in Salford, Stockport and Bolton at maximum capacity", and another press story revealing that Boris Johnson is set to "buy off corona revolt". Last night, GM Mayor Andy Burnham called for a "fair resolution".

ALMOST TWO THIRDS OF SALFORD DISTRICTS HAVE RISING VIRUS CASES

Salford has 167 new coronavirus cases, bringing the cumulative total to 5,558, as a new interactive map published by the Government shows more local district detail of cases, the rolling seven day rate and the percentage of rise or falls in cases – Salford Central and University district has the most cases, while 19 of 30 areas have percentage rises.

Meanwhile, there have been two new deaths announced at Salford Royal Hospital, while the number of patients admitted to North West hospitals continues to rise, along with the number of people on mechanical ventilation beds.

Salford has 155 new confirmed cases of coronavirus bringing the cumulative total to 5,391. The city has had 1,056 cases in the last seven days. There have been no new deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Last night the leaders of Greater Manchester released a statement saying that no further talks had taken place with the Government but "we are ready to meet at any time to try to agree a way forward". Meanwhile, the so-called Moonshot testing trial in Salford has been 're-focused'.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, to reconsider his stance against Tier 3 restrictions and support. Speaking this afternoon he said "I urge the Mayor to reconsider and engage constructively...Of course if agreement cannot be reached, I will need to intervene..."

Burnham hit back on Twitter by referencing the Chief Scientific Adviser in casting doubt on whether Tier 3 will work..."And yet I'm the one putting health at risk?" asked the GM Mayor.

Meanwhile, Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long Bailey revealed in the House of Commons last night that Salford Council's 'Moonshot' saliva testing scheme had been put on pause until yesterday. Questions remain about why Salford Mayor Paul Dennett has not kept the community informed.

SALFORD IN HIGH TIER BUT NOT VERY HIGH TIER

This afternoon, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new three tier system for COVID-19 restrictions, with Salford and Greater Manchester in Tier 2, classified as High, but not the Tier 3 Very High category.

It means that restrictions remain more or less what they are at the moment – except that people can now meet in private gardens in groups of six or less. After the announcement Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer accused the Prime Minister of 'serial failure'.

Salford has 167 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the cumulative total to 4,628. There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Latest data shows five COVID-19 patients admitted to Salford Royal during the week 23rd-30th September, compared to over twenty per week around mid-May. Today the Government will announce which new restriction tier Salford is in.

"To accept the Chancellor's package would be to surrender our residents to hardships in the run up to Christmas and our businesses to potential failure or collapse, and we are not going to do that."

ECCLES GIRLGUIDER AND COVID-19 RESPONDER GETS MBE

THE MOTHER OF 18,000 COMFORTS

Pat Mayle, from Eccles, has been awarded the MBE for services to Girlguiding and to the COVID-19 response. From Pat's initial idea for Girlguides to create comfort bags for bereavement wards five years ago, around 18,000 have now been made throughout the North West.

The scheme has been has been extended to include hospital emergency and homeless admissions, and for COVID-19 patients and NHS staff.

Salford has 155 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the cumulative total to 4,257. The city's seven day rate of positive cases per 100,000 population is now 342 compared to 95.8 for the week ending 12th September.

Meanwhile, Salford Royal Hospital has announced no new virus-related deaths, although there are now 1,098 COVIF-19 patients in North West hospitals with 185 admitted on 6th October.

Salford Red Devils, about to play in their first Challenge Cup final for 51 years, have been told that, not only are fans banned from going to Wembley to see the team play Leeds Rhinos on 17th October, but that there can't be a live fans screening at the AJ Bell Stadium.

"Greater Manchester is currently under tighter restrictions than many other parts of the country and it is therefore our responsibility to abide by these decisions and act in the best interest of our community" states the Club.

Meanwhile, Salford has the second highest COVID-19 positivity rate, and the third highest rate of positive cases in Greater Manchester.

Salford has 164 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the cumulative total to 3,948. There have been three new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital and there are 996 COVID-19 patients currently in North West hospitals.

Meanwhile new figures from the Office of National Statistics for the week 25th September show that there were three virus-related deaths in Salford care homes and three in Salford Royal Hospital.

Former councillor and leader of the LibDems in Salford, Norman 'Stormin' Norman' Owen, has passed away. After leaving the LibDems following the collapse of the party nationally he joined the Labour Party in Salford.

"I am very sorry to hear of Norman's passing" says colleague Councillor Kate Lewis "I knew him as a person always dedicated to serving his community."

SALFORD CITY COUNCIL TO SPEND £160,000 ON TREES

COUNCIL AND DEFRA TO SPEND OVER £700 PER TREE FOR SALFORD

Salford City Council is set to agree to spend £159,951, its share of £344,902 match funding with DEFRA, on planting 489 large trees on verges and in parks across the city. It works out at over £700 per tree to plant, protect and maintain each tree.

The trees will be planted, Salford Council states, at sites across the city that have least tree cover.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation is trying to tackle apathy, demotivation and fatigue in relation to COVID-19 which, it states, has reached over 60% in some cases. It lists three ways forward to solve the problem, with community at the heart.
