The EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) is the system that allows UK residents who are EU, EEA (European Economic Area) and Swiss citizens and their families to apply for status to remain in the UK, post-Brexit.
Applications must be made by 30th June in order to legally remain in the UK, and only those who started living here by 31st December 2020 can apply.
By the end of September 2020, there were 20,580 applications from Salford - the second highest number in Greater Manchester. And, of those applications that were concluded, 430 had 'other' outcomes - refused, withdrawn or void, or invalid. 'Other' outcomes do not result in a grant of UK residence status.
Just over a quarter of Salford applications came from Polish people - one of the highest proportions in Greater Manchester. And 3,270 of the applicants were under 18 years of age. Parents and guardians must apply for EUSS for all children (including new-borns) and young people if eligible, to access benefits and lawfully apply to high-level education in the UK when the time comes. Meanwhile, only 1.4% of applications came from people 65 years old or above - the joint lowest in Greater Manchester.
Overall in Greater Manchester, the nation with the highest number of applications to the end of September was Poland, followed by Italy, Non-EEA countries (those who do not hold citizenship of EU or EEA countries but are eligible to obtain a status under EU law), Spain and Romania (see graph).
Currently, over 8,800 applications from the ten GM boroughs are still outstanding, and Europia, which represents EU nationals in Greater Manchester and offers advice and help, states "We know how many people have applied so far, but we don't know how many have not, and we're not even aware of their situation..."
