At today's Greater Manchester Leaders' press conference, Andy Burnham talked of the "very difficult milestone that we passed yesterday with the 100,000 people and more sadly now having passed on due to COVID..."
In Salford so far this week alone there have been 15 deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital, including five more today, plus a further six Salford deaths reported this week (four in care homes, one at home and one in a communal establishment) registered up to 15th January. The total Greater Manchester COVID-19 death toll now stands at 5,880.
"We have to start with names not numbers and it's really important to focus on this because, for us, those 5,880 people are all someone's mum, dad; someone's nan, granddad, brother, sister, neighbour, work colleague" Andy Burnham explained "They are all people who have contributed to life here in Greater Manchester in one way or another...who built the place, lit up the place...
"In this pandemic we need to take a moment to think about that and to say to all of those families grieving, and I know it will have been difficult and that it brought back the pain of every single family that has been bereaved during this terrible time that we've been living through, that we have been thinking about you" he added.
There is now a GM Remembers online book of remembrance, with support from Manchester Cathedral and all the region's faith leaders..."It does create a very personal space where people can remember their loved ones" Burnham said "...It might create some comfort for people who are struggling..."
