FAT CAT SALARIES AT GREATER MANCHESTER COMBINED AUTHORITY REVEALED

£220,000 FOR CHIEF EXEC, £162,000 FOR DEPUTY, £110,000 FOR GM MAYOR

The latest accounts from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, revealed this week, show some truly staggering salaries, including £110,000 for GM Mayor Andy Burnham, £220,000 for the Chief Executive, a package of £162,000 for the Deputy Chief Exec and £162,000 for the Treasurer.

Meanwhile, the number of staff earning over £50,000 almost doubled, from 89 in 2017-18, to 160 in 2018-19. With more to come...

'Digital News Instead of Media Relations...'

Salford City Council has rubber stamped its new Communications Strategy which will see it use "behavioural science for reinforcing or changing behaviour", "become content publishers", use social media "as a source of intelligence", and move towards "Digital News Instead of Media Relations"...

The Council report adds that "Communications will play a key role in encouraging self reliance amongst residents...". In other words, it will use propaganda to cover up for cuts.

CORNERSTONE COMBATS HOLIDAY HUNGER

Salford charity, the Langworthy Cornerstone, is helping to combat holiday hunger by providing free lunches for local children during the school holidays.

"The issue of holiday hunger is really prevalent in the local area" says Cornerstone Manager, John Phillips "If we can go some way to tackling that by offering free meals for kids in the school holidays we can take some of the pressure off local families."

In June, the Salford Star ran an article about Salford girl, Hannah Gaffey, who had been accepted for a prestigious place at Cambridge University to do a Masters course in Education but was being thwarted by tuition and living fees of £24,000.

Now she is in with a chance of winning a £20,000 scholarship, having made it to the final 15 of a Future Finance competition but she needs to win an online vote and there's only two days left. The voting takes two clicks with no sign ups or costs.

Salford charities and community groups can apply for grants of between £500 and £20,000 from the People's Postcode Lottery between Wednesday 31st July and 14th August.

Themes range from promoting human rights, combating discrimination and the prevention of poverty, to health and wellbeing, flood prevention and reducing isolation.

Planning panel councillors yesterday rejected a deferred application by Bellway Homes to build 209 houses off Hilton Lane in Little Hulton on the grounds of increased traffic, while local councillors also objected to some terms of the Section 106 payments from the scheme.

Cash strapped Salford City Council is spending over £277,000 on a variety of outside consultants, ranging from £142,000 on the secret Swinton Transformation Masterplan, to £75,000 on 'Strategic Economic Development'.

Virtually none of this money is subject to much scrutiny or transparency, and it's almost impossible to work out what it's all for.

Hazel Blears, the former Salford MP and Cabinet Minister who was at the centre of the MPs expenses scandal ten years ago has been recognised with an honorary doctorate from the University of Salford.

Blears has been recognised for her work fighting dementia, rather than her political career, and says "If you want something enough and work hard for it then you can achieve whatever you want..."

PUBLIC SERVICES ACROSS GREATER MANCHESTER SET TO BE 'UNIFIED'

On Friday, members of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority are set to rubber stamp a white paper on a Greater Manchester Model for public services reform. It seeks to integrate and unify public services across the region to bring 'economies of scale' and eventually cover areas like housing and schools.

"It is about leading and making decisions as one" states the white paper, a brainchild of GM Mayor, Andy Burnham.

Dogs4Rescue is a unique kennel-free dog sanctuary run by Emma Billington and Louise Fields from their home in Irlam, where around forty dogs are able to run around freely in an open space and sleep in the house.

Tonight, Sunday 21st July, at 8pm, the amazing sanctuary, which has rescued over one thousand dogs, features in a Chanel 5 documentary My Houseful of Animals, as Emma and Louise hope to raise £175,000 to open up the UK's largest free running rescue and re-homing centre.

The Charity Commission has slammed the trustees of the Fred and Maureen Done Charitable Trust over a "conflict of interest" after £290,000 was donated to improvements to the Old Warke Dam in Worsley – which Fred's mansion, The Aviary, overlooked.

The Trust also loaned money to one of Fred Done's private companies, which was also criticised by the Charity Commission.

For six months, members of the Swinton community have been trying to reinstate the Swinton and Pendlebury Community Committee, given the huge issues around homes of the golf club site, Campbell Road and the Swinton Transformation plan.

At yesterday's full meeting of Salford City Council the community committee reinstatement was again refused in response to a question from former Labour councillor Paul Wilson who told the Salford Star; "I'm disgusted...It's like the councillors have something to hide..."

SAVE BODDAN LODGE CAMPAIGN TAKES PROTEST TO SALFORD CITY COUNCIL

DOZENS OF ELDERS DESCEND ON SALFORD CIVIC CENTRE TO LINE DANCE, PLAY BOWLS AND PROTEST

This morning, dozens of members and supporters of Boddan Lodge Over 60s Club in Monton descended on Salford Civic Centre to lobby councillors wanting to axe its meagre £15,000 subsidy which could see the fifty year old club close.

To showcase their activities, members played bowls on the Council lawn and line danced, while actor and journalist Nigel Pivaro lent support. Inside the meeting, questions were asked about a 'borderline ludicrous' rescue business plan, drawn up by councillors, that expected 80 year olds to set up a self financing business!

SALFORD CITY COUNCIL HAS STAGGERING £53MILLION INTEREST PAYABLE ON LOANS

SALFORD COUNCIL INTEREST ON BORROWING, PFI AND LOBO HITS £53MILLION TO BE TAKEN FROM FRONT LINE SERVICES – AS BODDAN LODGE FACES AXE FOR £15,000

Salford Council's interest payable on borrowing for things like office blocks and the RHS Garden, PFI costs for new schools and sorting out dodgy LOBO loans mushroomed from almost £33million in 2017-18, to over £53million in 2018-19.

The Council confirmed to the Salford Star that "Interest payments are always a revenue charge". In other words, this money is taken from the budget for front line services, including the measly £15,000 the Council wants to axe from the Boddan Lodge Over 60s Club.

The Council wants to axe the small grant for the fifty year old club based at Monton Green which is a lifeline for over one hundred elderly people. Expect placards but also sequence dancing and bowls as members showcase what would be lost.

240 DEAF SALFORD CHILDREN DENIED COMMUNICATION AIDS

The National Deaf Children's Society has slammed Salford Council, for withholding "life-changing technology" from 240 young deaf children in its care. The Council is one of 43 local authorities that don't provide 0-4 year-old deaf children with radio aids to use at home

The Society states it's a "tragic waste of potential" when deaf children miss out on radio aids because of where they live, calling on Salford to end the "radio aid lottery".

Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, has announced his Cabinet for this year with the same people as last year - plus one new position for 'Executive Support Member for Planning, Housing and Sustainable Development' filled by Councillor Mike McCusker, who will pick up a further £10,688 on top of his basic councillor allowances of £10,826.

There are now 14 members of the Cabinet; the Mayor and 13 Deputies, Lead Members and Executive Support Members. Last year, councillors picked up an extra £245,000 in 'special allowances' on top of their £692,000 councillor allowances.

Investors in the new company stand to gain huge sums of money after laying out £1.2million, with an offer from Bellway Homes of £30million to develop the land for housing. The campaign is also looking for a guarantee by 23rd July from the Salford City Mayor and councillors that no houses will be built on the site.

THOUSANDS JOIN YOKO TO RING BELLS FOR PEACE IN MANCHESTER

Thousands of people flocked to Cathedral Gardens in Manchester last night to join Yoko Ono in her work Bells For Peace..."Together we will change the whole vibration of the planet just with the sound of these bells" she told them "Now hold up your bells and ring for peace...Peace is power!"

CHAPEL STREET SALFORD ROAD TO BE RIPPED UP JUST SEVEN YEARS AFTER COMPLETION

AFTER REGENT ROAD PREPARE FOR HUGE ROADWORKS ON CHAPEL STREET

Just seven years after completion, Chapel Street is set to be ripped up again this summer after the original contractors, Urban Vision and Galliford Try, apparently cocked up the original road 'improvements'.

Following a legal case brought by Salford City Council, the £490,000 repairs are due to go ahead this summer, after the Regent Road works are complete. A Council report states that there is "the likelihood of the works causing major disruption on Chapel Street". And next up for disruption is Trafford Road...

TUNNEL OPTION FOR M60 TRAFFIC THROUGH SALFORD

M60 NORTH WEST QUADRANT PLANS TO SORT 'CONGESTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS'

Last week, in secret, Salford City Council's Scrutiny Panel discussed an 'update' on the M60 North West Quadrant trying to juggle "congestion and environmental problems" around Junctions 8 to 18, which are within the worst 10% of national motorway links in terms of journey time and reliability.

A tunnel solution is one of the options being considered but the public is not being consulted at this stage 'because they don't want to cause them unnecessary anxiety about something which may not happen'.

SALFORD AND MANCHESTER CATCH THE BUS WEEK – BUT NO DECENT BUSES TO CATCH!

BUS CAMPAIGNERS QUEUE OUTSIDE GM MAYOR'S OFFICE

This week is Catch The Bus Week, sponsored by the big profit making transport companies. But last night Better Buses for Greater Manchester which is campaigning for more public control, formed a queue outside the office of Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, demanding that he stands by his pledge to regulate the buses.

"We would catch a bus, if there was one to catch" said Pascale from Better Buses "One that was affordable, easy to use, integrated to link with trams and train timetables, accessible, and regular."

MANCHESTER METEOR TO LAUNCH AS AN ALTERNATIVE MEDIA CO-OP

PERFORMANCE, STALLS AND TALKS WITH THE METEOR

The Meteor, Manchester's alternative media, is to launch as a co-op on Thursday 4th July, with an event at the Methodist Central Hall on Oldham Street in Manchester from 6pm featuring performance, talks and a marketplace for local community groups..

"A media co-operative, with democracy as a core value, we believe is the best way to alleviate the democratic deficit caused by the decline of traditional media" says Meteor co-editor, Conrad Bower.
