NO VISITORS, OPENINGS PLANNED FOR 1ST AUGUST ON HOLD

Salford last night had new restrictions imposed as part of a Greater Manchester clampdown following rising cases of coronavirus. From today, visitors to homes and gardens from other households are banned, although you can go to the pub with members of your household or bubble. Further openings set for 1st August have also been put on hold.

Salford has eleven new confirmed cases of the virus and new data shows outbreaks in ten areas of Salford, including Broughton, Irlam, Swinton and Pendleton.

Analysis of prescriptions during the early period of lockdown shows that NHS Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) prescribed more medication than any other CCG in the Greater Manchester region, and more anti-depressants than any other CCG with 155.8 prescriptions per thousand patients.

Salford has eleven new confirmed coronavirus cases, bringing the cumulative total to 1,435 in the city, up from the previous day's 1,424. There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, Vue cinema on Salford Quays has announced that it is reopening on 7th August with tickets available from today..."Vue believes cinema has a vital role to play in providing escapism from everyday life" the company states.

The My City Salford website, launched in 2017 with £180,000 public money from Andy Burnham's Greater Manchester Transformation Fund, had an average of just over 43 people per day visiting it during 2019, with a tiny 678 total visits this year.

The site, lauded as a "groundbreaking citizen-centric project" and a "21st century digital neighbourhood" was unobtainable and derelict recently, but is now back online as just a directory.

Salford has five new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the total to 1,424, as new figures for the week ending 19th July show small numbers of positive tests concentrated in four areas – Walkden North West, Ordsall and Salford Quays, Ellenbrook and Boothstown, and Swinton West.

Meanwhile there has been one new virus-related death at Salford Royal Hospital announced yesterday, and one care home death in the week up to 17th July.

Meanwhile, charity Forever Manchester has launched Phase 2 of its Community Support Fund for organisations supporting those suffering hardship as a result of the pandemic. It also has a Community Centre Support Fund to help with COVID-secure adaptations at centres.

Over the past decade the Salford Star has documented how Salford City Council has flogged off community owned land to developers and speculators. Yet over in Duchy, a local cab driver whose family has lived on the estate for donkeys' years wants to buy a small plot of unused land to build a forever bungalow for himself to live in.

The Council states that the land is not 'surplus to requirements' and that he can't have it, even though he is willing to pay the market rate in an open tender. Should the Council be selling land to local residents rather than to big business and foreign investors?

Salford has seven new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the cumulative total to 1,394, as the Office for National Statistics publish a map of COVID-19 death numbers by local areas.

Overall, Higher Broughton and Broughton Park have the highest numbers, followed by Eccles, Little Hulton North, Worsley and Swinton. No area in Salford has escaped a COVID death. New figures also show that half of all Salford's care homes have had outbreaks of the virus since March.

In June, Salford City UNISON secured protective support for the city's care workers looking after vulnerable people. Known as the 'Salford Offer', it included full sick pay for those workers who have to self-isolate and shield.

Now, it emerges, some care companies are not implementing the offer, despite compensation via funding from Salford City Council and the NHS..."They should forget about how many days you've had off and focus on what's important; staff and service users not dying..." says one worker.

Firstly, the Intro to the draft Salford Council accounts for this year announces that the city has gone from being the 22nd most deprived district in the country in 2015, to being the 18th most deprived. While measurements against its own raft of progress criteria from 2016 scream 'Failure' on health, education and more...with £72million of cuts, or 'interventions' by 2023/24 to come.

SALFORD UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT LEAVES STUDENTS BEHIND

The University of Salford has ranked 126th out of 152 in the new National Student Survey which is based on student satisfaction. The University had already culled professors in its Business School and is looking to make a further £21.5million savings.

However the University's estates programme – the Salford Crescent and University District Masterplan – in league with Salford City Council, and costing around £2.5billion, is going ahead with English Cities Fund the approved contractor.

SEVEN YEAR OLD WALKS 150KM AFTER STRAY RABBIT SADNESS

Seven year old George Jones adopted a stray rabbit from the Manchester and Salford branch of the RSPCA and decided to help other stray animals by walking 150km with target of £150. By the time he finished the walk at Salford Quays he'd raised over £1,800.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) patient, Karen Morris, from Salford, has been campaigning for better treatment for sufferers for a number of years.

At the last full meeting of Salford City Council, a recommendation to appoint Political Assistants for both Labour and Conservative political groups, as set down by law, was proposed and seconded by Conservative councillors with no formal dissent.

Now a motion has been put to this week's full Council meeting trying to reverse the decision – even though an advert has already been placed for a Political Assistant Graduate Trainee for the Conservatives with a salary of £17,364. Under a different piece of legislation, the Labour Party City Mayor already has an Assistant, paid almost £35,000. What on earth is going on?

A LETTER BOX IN BOOTHSTOWN JUST FOR KIDS

Salford poet, Jenny Berry has devised a scheme for kids to get creative during the coronavirus crisis by placing a letterbox outside The Coal & Cotton pub in Boothstown in which they can post poems, stories, pictures and whatever else, while taking out another kid's output.

SALFORD CORONAVIRUS CASES CREEPING UP

Salford has seven new confirmed cases of coronavirus, bringing the total to 1,338, up from 1,331 the previous day. Over just three days Salford has seen 23 new cases of the virus, compared to nine new cases in the first three days when the new Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 statistics became available. There have been no new deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Salford City Council's proposed anti-litter campaign has been posted on its website asking the community for responses...and it's been met with absolute scorn so far judging by social media responses...

Slogans including 'Pick It Up Bro' and 'Pick It Up Love' have been branded 'sexist', 'cringey', 'ill thought out' and like 'someone from the council trying to be down with the kids'...Ouch!

The Salford City Mayor and MPs have written to Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, slating the lack of information on positive test data which "falls far short of what we need to...effectively prevent the spread of the virus".

Even aspects of the new Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 data, which they say was only received for the first time on 2nd July, is "incomplete", while a "complex labyrinth of information" is "at best unhelpful and at worst dangerous."

GREATER MANCHESTER DISABLED PEOPLE SURVEY FINDS ISOLATION, AND LACK OF ACCESS TO FOOD, MEDICINE AND INFO

A new survey of almost 1,000 disabled people in Greater Manchester has revealed the shocking state in which many of them were left during the coronavirus crisis.

The survey by the Greater Manchester Disabled People's Panel, made up of 14 disabled people's organisations, reveals that disabled people were being disproportionately affected by the pandemic, experiencing social isolation, reduced social care support, issues relating to access to food, medicine and information, and a severe impact on mental health.
