Salford has 139 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 142, bringing the cumulative total to 18,549. The seven day average of cases has decreased to 979, down from 1,017, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 378.2, down from 392.9.
Elsewhere in Greater Manchester, the seven day average of cases in Bury is 758 (down from 781), with a seven day rate per 100,000 population of 396.9 (down from 408.9); Bolton 1,116 (down from 1,123), with a rate of 388.1 (down from 390.5); Manchester 2,461 (down from 2,470), with a rate of 445.1 (down from 446.8); and Oldham 721 (down from 722), with a rate of 304.1 (down from 304.5).
Rochdale has a seven day average of cases of 776 (up from 756), with a seven day rate of 348.9 (up from 339.9); Stockport 1,142 (down from 1,153), with a rate of 389.2 (down from 392.9); Tameside 822 (down from 825), with a rate of 362.9 (down from 364.2); Trafford 895 (down from 921), with a rate of 377.1 (down from 388); and Wigan 1,325 (down from 1,376), with a rate of 403.1 (down from 418.7).
There have been three new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital; however new statistics for the week ending 8th January and registered up to 16th January show no COVID deaths in Salford care homes or at home or in a hospice, although there was one in what is classed as an 'other communal establishment'.
Meanwhile, the Government is to impose fines of £800 for people attending house parties of 15 people or more, with each repeat offence doubling to a maximum of £6,400. This is a huge increase from the previous £200 fine or £100 if paid early
Home Secretary Priti Patel says the new rules are aimed at "small minority that refuse to do the right thing", and "To them my message is clear; if you don't follow rules then the police will enforce them." Organisers of big gatherings of more than thirty people will still face fines up to £10,000.
