KERSAL CONSERVATIVE COUNCILLOR TO STAND FOR SALFORD CITY MAYOR
|
|
Star date: 16th March 2021 ARNIE SAUNDERS TO TAKE ON PAUL DENNETT FOR SALFORD CITY MAYOR Councillor Arnie Saunders, who wrestled the Kersal ward seat away from Labour in 2017, has been chosen as the Conservative candidate in the forthcoming election for Salford City Mayor. The jovial rabbi is likely to be the main opponent for current Labour Party Mayor, Paul Dennett. Full details here...
|
|
Back in March 2017, at the height of the controversy over the Class of '92 plans for the Moor Lane Salford City FC site, an Independent candidate, Johnny Wineberg, stood in a local Kersal by-election and split the vote in the formerly safe Labour Party seat, allowing Arnie Saunders to win the ward for the Conservatives for first time in years. Since then, Rabbi Saunders has been re-elected and been a vocal and jovial presence in the Council Chamber, while also standing for MP in the Worsley and Eccles South constituency, coming a relatively close second to standing MP Barbara Keeley. His policies seem relatively thin at the moment, with a press release stating that, "If elected, he will focus on 'jabs and jobs' - helping to continue the incredible roll out of jabs and exploiting post Brexit and post pandemic opportunities to bring jobs, trade and business to Salford. "He will also work to protect Salford's Green Belt, improve Salford's streetscene, reduce crime, improve public transport and keep Council Tax as low as possible" the release adds, explaining that "He describes himself as a 'caring capitalist' who understands the concerns of ordinary people..." . Fun Facts About Arnie Saunders (as relayed in the press release) * 'Arnie claims to be the only known politician to be allergic to money! Among his various allergies, he has been medically diagnosed (at Salford Royal) to be allergic to nickel - a major component of coins.' * 'His first experience of a council chamber was in 1971! He was presented with a trophy for winning the former Prestwich Council's annual school cycling competition!' The Salford City Mayor Election is set to go ahead on Thursday 6th May. At the same time there is also the Greater Manchester Mayor Election and the local election for all sixty of the city's council seats. Candidates for all seats have until 8th April to declare they are standing, and need only two proposers rather than the usual eight. With three seats up for grabs in each ward, for winning councillors at the election the terms of office are... A 3 year term (until 2024) for first placed candidate; a 2 year term (until 2023) for the second placed candidate; and a 1 year term of office (until 2022) for the third placed candidate. | Just look at Ray Boyle's comment about Arnie. I wonder whats going on here? It seems Ray Boyles computer is having the same problems as Rayofsunshines computer. Both computers seem to be putting pronunciation marks all over the place, mainly over the vowels, and occasionally over the R. As I am
led to believe, Ray Boyle is an IT expert at Salford council. Is this another example of Salford Council workers professional expertise?
Anyway , back to Arnie. I got a gut feeling he's going to win. A lot of people I have chatted to, all labour voters, have all said they are not voting this time.As much as I would like to be rid of labour, voting Tory would breach my strict principle of skeptical neutrality, so I won't be voting for Arnie. |

What could he possibly do worse than labour in our city? Come on Ray ,think of something, what could a Tory mayor do to make life worse for Salford people? And just think,a Tory mayor, even if he did exactly the same as Dennett, would garner much more public anger than Dennett does. There would be a mass demonstration each day outside the town hall. The rent a mob gang would love it. I would join in as well. Just think,I would be on the same side as Ray and paul. I bet its good fun all that demonstrating. I tell you what a tory mayor could do,he could really get going inside that town hall and find out what the rats have been up to.Just look whats happened, 9 of them jumping ship, they know whats going to happen.Look at them carefully ,its the more intelligent ones, look at them. |

| @Truth Hurts: Same here, natural Labour voter but they’re unelectable, just like the Tories. People like Ray are so rabid and ideologically boxed in that all they see is black and white, or red and blue as it is. If you’re not Labour then you’re Tory, as not voting Labour is helping the Tories win. I’m betting Ray was the type to denounce G.W.Bush’s “You’re either with us or with the terrorists” statement. Yet, he’s doing the exact same thing here. You dare question Labour, and you’re automatically the enemy, called a Tory and told to fuck off (Ray’s not said that yet, but I’ve seen others do it). There’s no civil debating, asking you why you think how you do or an actual presentation of evidence to back his own view. It’s just insults and lame excuses, and that’s it. Just how the Labour Party itself behaves nationally. “We know best, you don’t, but we have your best interests at heart. We want ‘fairness’, ‘equality’, ‘justice’. So vote for us or get the Tories! Better the devil you know, right?” That’s their pitch, and has been for some time. |

| I just get fed up with people name calling all the time. If as a voter, decide NOT to vote for a left wing labour faction why should i be immediately labeled a Tory supporter and all the other name calling blah blah blah. The benefits of not having a Corbyn/Abbot/Wrong-Daily government are now being seen - we have left the Euro Club/Trough HURRAH, we are not in the failed Euro Medicine Procurement Scheme HURRAH, the value of the Great British Pound has risen by over 10% against all major currencies in recent months HURRAH. So thats 3 big HURRAHs for not having a left wing labour government who ignored the working class they are supposed to represent. I'd rather vote a monkey into power than that shambles. So call me what you will - I am in reality a natural labour voter - but the labour team at the last election didn't represent my views, and I won't be voting for Sir Kier NonStarter either - as while he was director of public prosecutions he knew about but chose to ignore all these big grooming cases.. his polical correctness knows no bounds but did nothing to protect our children. Maybe the labour party will one day sort itself out with real leadership, and quality local mps and councillors.... but I'm not holding my breath |

I just didn't make as much as labour MP Hazel Blears friend did.If they had given me the £60 000 grant, we would have made good wages doing it up, and we could have rented it to someone we know, a bit of pension money if you like. Now, like I said ,only rich yuppies and councilors can live in that area..The house I bought off them, where I live, is worth 6 times what I paid them. I am not flogging it though, I live there rent free now. When I am 6 feet under, I can be trusted to make sure a Salford person lives in it. One of my grankids. Like I have said before many times, houses are not for profiteering, they are for us to build and own and look after and live in them. Salford council have prooved they cannot look after the houses they own."Its the torys fault" they say,"they don't give us any money". Well the torys don't give me any money, and I know how to look after houses. Waste of space Salford council, just look at the thousands of good houses they have pulled down, thats why were short of them.Tell you what, lets vote for Arnie, then we will have a Tory here in charge. He flogged them for a fortune. Now, only Yuppies and labour councilors can afford to live there. The council took the piss out of me, because the law said they could. | @ Ray of sunshine: You’ve just proved me right in everything I’ve said. You never learn and that’s why you’re condemned to a weak opposition and condemning the rest of us to Tory rule. The Labour party being unelectable is Labour’s fault and no one else’s. You can blame the media and Tories all you want, the fact the red wall went blue is entirely Labour’s fault. As for ideas did you not see my bit about holding developers to account? Or was the steam coming out of your ears and the froth from your mouth blinding you? If the Council held developers to account, like other GM Councils do, they wouldn’t fail to deliver on what they’re supposed to. The Council has lost thousands of social homes, land and money to these developers, and you sit there and defend it. Yes the Council’s using ‘Derive’ to build new social housing, but the numbers are small compared to what’s needed and what has been either knocked down or flogged. So, again... if the Council sets a precedent and stands up to developers and get the money where it’s due and housing, and to stop knocking perfectly good housing down, then we would be in better position regarding social housing. The Council won’t though because they want to gentrify. In many of the plans these developers have basically said they’re getting rid of “Economically inactive households” to replace them with “Young professionals”, and the Council says nothing. The ultimate Tory wet dream of gentrification in working class areas enabled by a Labour Council and you’re cheerleading and defending it. And again, I’m not a Tory, I don’t vote Tory and I never well. Also Boris is a plank and I don’t trust him or his cabinet as far as I could throw them. Having said that, given the state of Labour with their leadership, the way they view their voter base and defenders like you, I don’t trust them either. Why should I vote for a party that’s gentrifying my area, tells me I’m “thick” and “racist” for voting Brexit and is a “... unreconstructed Tory lickspittle!” for questioning the Council? |

| @ Truth Hurts: Exactly that! When the ‘red wall’ turned blue he blamed it on the Tories tricking people and not themselves ignoring and insulting their traditional voter base. Since Brexit Labour had be calling it’s voters racist and thick and tried to overturn the vote, then they got their arses smacked for it at the last election. And yet people like Ray still haven’t learned from it. Not only that but Ray continues to cheer for the Council as they flog land and houses to developers. His excuse “The Council doesn’t have the money to challenge every developer!” And “It’s the Tories policy!” Both are weak and laughable excuses. The Council finds money when it needs to, but not to fight developers (unless it’s Worsely) as they’re content to let them gentrify and get away with no or very little contributions. And yes Ray, again, if they set a precedent and stood up and said no to developers and get the contributions then we’d have more money and housing. As for it being Tory policy, that’s only half right, as you well know, the Council’s own policy doesn’t help. And no, Ray, I’m not a Tory. That’s another problem with people like Ray and a lot of Labour, anyone who questions or criticises Labour is automatically a ‘Tory’. You don’t win voters that way, or debates. You’re primary response to everything is insult and make excuses for the Council or Labour. Keep it up and Labour will keep getting it’s arse smacked. It’s ok though, Ray, just denounce me as Tory and stick your head back in the sand and ignore me, it’s what you do best. |

| Now Felse is out of the race it puts Arnie in a strong position as more floating votes will get carved up. Genius one from Felse. He has put pressure on the main Parties to have to prove they are worthy of the job. |

| If we guess that 80-90% of the Brexit party voters against Barbara Keely were likely Tory voters, then Arnie did really well. Without them,it would have been even closer. If we have a situation with a head to head debate, like the one held on radio at BBC when Stuart got elected (Stuart ducked that one,a wise move),Arnie will run rings round Dennett, I dont know how good Arnie is, but there will be so much flak waiting for Dennett, he will be crippled without Arnie Saunders saying a word. Will Arnie go out to meet the people? Will he go and talk to them on Salford precinct, eccles ,swinton and walkden precinct.? Dennett wouldn't show his face on any of these places, and if he does,I for one will have a few questions to ask him while the cameras are going. Also ,what is the position of advertising for candidates in the media, media such as this. I guess candidates would be allowed paid adverts on journals such as this, but would the Star take them? If so, that would put labour in a strange position ,as they would surly have to respond in kind. I for one would love to see a live debate, perhaps at somewhere like our university, question is, would Paul and our Ray like to see Dennett on stage against terminator Arnie? |

| Considering the Current Mayor Paul Dennett says Quote from the guardian “He rejects gentrification, recently celebrating the council’s purchase of Islington Mill, a popular arts venue, using £3.3m of EU money, by saying: “This is about protecting and cultivating the production of culture – not just the consumption of culture. Ownership is key and, moving forward, the project we are embarking on with the Mill will be crucial in creating models for communities to resist gentrification. It’s about putting power into the hands of local communities.” And “ In December, Dérive announced the largest council housing scheme for 50 years in Salford – 417 new council and community-owned homes, with the potential for 3,000 more. Dennett’s administration has previously been criticised for letting developers build huge blocks with no provision for affordable housing.” Some whoppers there Ray of Sunshine gone a bit quite in there run up to the local election 🗣 .............. 👂 it will be a barn sell for you to convince your supporters that Uncle Pauli Dennett isn’t able to use his muscle to get developers to build affordable and social rent homes in the numbers required 417 homes doesn’t even scrape the barrel |

| Paul Kelly, before you start running this candidate down with your usual diatribes, let us give him a chance please.
I have only met Arnie Saunders once, when ne canvassed at the last General Election, when Barbara Keeley was nowhere to be seen and he was quite knowledgeable about the points that were put to him.
Let’s look at his opponent in May-
Is the current Mayor representing all the people? No
Does the current Mayor actually visit all parts of the city?No
Are we getting full value for money from the Mayor? No
Is everybody happy with the Mayors performance.?No
Does the Mayor deserve another term?No
Does anyone take Paul Kelly seriously ?No |

| I welcome Arnie Saunders as he will make an excellent Mayor. I hope he and Paul Dennett will stick to local politics with so much needed doing at grass roots in Salford. People are suffering post Covid with job losses, evictions and poverty about to rampage. In schools children need mental health support along with many parents that live them but cannot see a healthy way ahead. We must end litter dumping, protect green spaces and build social housing. I feel this is going to be a close run election, either can win but facing fact we know Labour will keep overall control. I will not stand as I am against this election in the Covid months and will not risk adding to the epidemic spread which takes me to beg a joint effort by candidates to put safety first. I will vote and feel our Salford will become stronger, happier and healthier if Party politics stay focused on local needs. Every child matters and all adults must feel safe and secure. Personally I am horrified by the acceleration of Nuclear and trust whichever becomes our Mayor will make Salford a nuclear free City from day one. Remember communities must live together and we have to share the planet by doing our best to protect all people and save our environment. |

Thats got the Tory flag wavers jumping up and down of course the Tory arms dealers will be very happy until one day one of these mad missiles go off and destroy the planet the Tory decisions made the world a more dangerous place and of course Salfordians will pay for tory imperialism through cuts to the services we need to live decent lives and remember if you vote for jovial Arnie the caring capitalist his party have just given the nurses and health workers a one per cent pay increase and other public service workers the same. |

| Wineberg did not split the Labour vote in that by-election. If he had not stood, Arnie would have won by more - as has been borne out by subsequent elections in the ward. |
