Salford has 43 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 44, bringing the cumulative total to 15,017. The seven day average of cases has increased to 542, up from 535, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 209.4, up from 206.7.
Salford's current fall in positive virus cases might have something to do with Christmas testing numbers, as only four lateral flow tests were carried out on Boxing Day in Salford, with ten carried out on Christmas Day, compared to around double that figure during the previous days.
PCR testing statistics aren't yet available for the Christmas period but in the seven day run up to the festive period ending 22nd December, 7,807 people were tested with a positivity rate of 7.7%.
Elsewhere in Greater Manchester, the seven day average of cases in Bury is 431 (up from 413), with a seven day rate per 100,000 population of 225.7 (up from 216.2); Bolton 456 (up from 442), with a rate of 158.6 (up from 153.7); Manchester 1,136 (up from 1,113), with a rate of 205.5 (up from 201.3), and Oldham 446 (down from 464), with a rate of 188.1 (down from 195.7).
Rochdale has a seven day average of cases of 472 (up from 468), with a seven day rate of 212.2 (up from 210.4); Stockport 546 (up from 517), with a rate of 186.1 (up from 176.2); Tameside 359 (up from 338), with a rate of 158.5 (up from 149.2); Trafford 525 (up from 475), with a rate of 221.2 (up from 200.1); and Wigan 572 (up from 536), with a rate of 174 (up from 163.1).
While seven day rates of the virus have increased in all boroughs of Greater Manchester, bar Oldham, we are not seeing anything like the growth in cases seen elsewhere in the UK, although Trafford's rate is rising a bit too fast.
There have been three new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital, bringing the total to 450 since the start of the pandemic, with a rate of 173.9 per 100,000 population, 14th highest in the country.
Greater Manchester has the most boroughs with highest COVID-19 death rates in England, with Tameside on 222.1 per 100,000 population, Wigan on 218.8, Rochdale 214, Bury 195.3 and Bolton 179.1.
The latest data for Salford Royal shows nine COVID-19 patients admitted on 20th December, with a total of 152 COVID patients in the hospital on 23rd December, with 13 on mechanical ventilation. This compares to 163 patients in Salford Royal on 23rd November and 19 on mechanical ventilation.
