SALFORD HAS 95 NEW CORONAVIRUS CASES AS CHRISTMAS DAY ADVICE GIVEN BY PUBLIC HEALTH DIRECTOR

Star date: 24th December 2020

GREATER MANCHESTER INFECTION RATES UP BUT NO 'WILDFIRE' GROWTH

Salford has 95 new coronavirus cases, up from the previous day's 94, as the seven day rate per 100,000 population stands at 179.7, up from 168.1. While Salford's case rate increases, in Greater Manchester as a whole, three boroughs have seen decreases, and we're not yet seeing the 'wildfire' growth of the virus that other areas are experiencing. There have been five new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, Salford's Director of Public Health has given out Christmas Day safety advice..."Stick to games like quizzes rather than cards or board games" etc.

While Salford's case rate increases, in Greater Manchester as a whole, three boroughs (Rochdale, Oldham and Wigan) have seen decreases, and we're not yet seeing the 'wildfire' growth of the virus that other areas are experiencing.

There have been five new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital.

Meanwhile, Salford's Director of Public Health, Dr Muna Abdel-Aziz, has provided advice for Christmas Day festivities, explaining that "Now is the time to follow even more carefully the guidance on face coverings, social distancing and hand hygiene so you and your loved ones can stay well this winter.

"You should limit your contact with other people as much as possible to reduce the chance of picking up the virus before Christmas" she adds "The virus doesn't know it is Christmas..."

For Christmas Day itself, Dr Muna Abdel-Aziz advises...

• Keep your time together short (in time) and small (in number)

• Consider your seating plan and use the whole room to stay as far apart as possible from each other

• Keep on your face covering as long as possible, for example only removing it for eating or drinking

• Keep the room ventilated while you are together, with some windows open

• Serve portions and avoid passing round food dishes or bottles

• Stick to games like quizzes rather than cards or board games

• Wash hands frequently and put hand sanitiser bottles out

• Keep hugs this year to those you live with

• Play music rather than singing or shouting along, as droplets travel

"Please do consider how you can protect vulnerable people by staying away or meeting them outdoors" she urges.

Salford's test centres will be open on Christmas Day for anyone needing a test but there may be reduced opening hours so check times

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
