New figures from the Office for National Statistics show that Salford still has more coronavirus-related deaths in care homes than anywhere else in Greater Manchester.
The total for sad virus-related care home deaths in the city is now 122 up to 22nd May but registered up to 30th May, which is six more than the previous week's 116. That is 13 more than Stockport which has the next largest total, 109, and way more than Manchester (73), Rochdale (37) and Bury (53).*
The Salford Star has been told that one reason for this could be that Salford has the most less wealthy people in care homes who don't have to pay any 'top up' money towards their care, but we haven't seen any official figures that back this up. It could also be that Salford has lots of care homes but, again, no official figures have been produced to make comparisons.
On a lighter note, Salford Royal Hospital has announced no new virus-related deaths again, for the fifth day in a row.
Meanwhile, Salford now has five new confirmed cases of coronavirus bringing the total to 935, up five from the previous day.
Elsewhere in Greater Manchester, the small rises in the number of cases continues, with those in Manchester now totalling 1,587 (up from 1,584), followed by Wigan with 1,208 (up from 1,207), Stockport 1,054 (same), Oldham 1,084 (up from 1,079), Bolton 1,024 (up from 1,019), Trafford 829 (down from 828), Rochdale 801 (up from 794), Bury 764 (up from 761) and Tameside 740 (up from 735).
