On 6th May, as well as elections for Salford City Mayor and Greater Manchester Mayor*, there's also a huge election for Salford City Council, with every single seat in every ward up for grabs...sixty seats in twenty wards, with wards chopped and changed and re-created, including Blackfriars and Trinity, Higher Irlam and Peel Green, Kersal and Broughton Park, Pendleton and Charlestown, and the Quays.

Altogether, there's 172 candidates, with the Labour Party the only force putting up three candidates in every ward in the city, a total of sixty. The Conservative Party comes second with fifty candidates standing, while the Liberal Democrats make something of a comeback, standing 28 candidates, including Jake Overend who is standing in Claremont and also standing for Salford City Mayor.

The Green Party is standing 19 candidates, including former Labour councillor Howard Balkind who is contesting Swinton Park, and Wendy Olsen who is standing for Blackfriars and Trinity, while also in the race for Salford City Mayor.

The Core Independents are hoping to build on their success at the last election, with three candidates standing in the new Higher Irlam and Peel Green ward, plus one standing in Cadishead and Lower Irlam.

Other Independents standing are Mary Ferrer in Claremont, Zak D'Amelio in Blackfriars and Trinity, Jonathan Marsden in Pendlebury and Clifton, George Broadley and Oliver Youd in Pendleton and Charlestown, Andrew Olsen in Swinton and Wardley, Christopher Barnes and Joe O'Neill in Swinton Park, and Barrie Fallows in Weaste and Seedley.

I must be getting old and definitely confused! I think SP9 was in the old Pendlebury ward and SP8 was in the old Claremont. Still the lessons apply - uptodate maps!

I was out on my morning perambulation today on my trusty turbo-powered mobility scooter, Matron Myra of the Salford Maximum Security Twilight Home for Bewildered Geriatrics (rated as “Outstanding” by the CQC), having turfed we residents out at 0900, thus enabling her to undertake her weekly fumigation. It was a beautiful morning, the sun was shining, the birds were singing and I stopped occasionally to admire the beautiful gardens. St John’s Church yard was a picture, and I stopped to check my plot in the corner at the top of St John St and Bolton Rd. Just round the corner, the peace and tranquillity were disturbed by a vituperative diatribe emanating from the mouth of a young political leafleter (political party unknown but he was wearing a red T-shirt) spouting the usual accusations of anyone not belonging to their tribe, being directed at an older political leafleter (political affliation unknown too). Nearby were some mothers on the school run looking very displeased. Intrigued, I got out my high-powered binoculars for a better view. I espied a copy the “Red Shirt’s” leaflet in his hand – it was for candidates in Pendlebury & Clifton. This puzzled me, so I checked the electoral map on my iPad. He was delivering in Swinton Park Polling District SP9!! I found this rather chucklesome. One lesson I learned years ago working for the Whig Party was that you give a map to leafleters. Another was that you don’t cause a scene in the streets. Chuckling my socks off, I trundled off down St John St and saw a Tory leaflet in the gutter. Being an anti-litterist I picked it up and started reading it. Well, you could have knocked me off my scooter with a featherduster! It was for the Claremont candidates!!! Another lesson learned from the Whig Party is you give your leafleters UPTODATE maps. Swinton Park SP9 used to be in Claremont till it was transferred in the Boundary Changes! I don’t suppose it will matter much because most candidates are unknown to the electors, and most don’t know in which Ward they live. But if you’re going to do a job, and be credible, do it right!

Just gave a bit more thought to my idea of grammatical style. Have you noticed our Ray's style? When he is talking about political things, he comes out with all sorts of sophisticated words that he has learned from his more intelligent and better educated political masters. He has certainly never learned these words at a Salford comprehensive school. When he is talking about other things, he uses normal language like the rest of us.

Why has Paul not put his name on articles recently? we all recognize his grammatical style ,especially when he rants on about sleazy tories. We all know how bad and greedy this bunch are, we don't need to be told. Enemies like the Torys we can put up with, its so called friends of ordinary people like the labour party, that turn out to be traitors, that we cannot put up with.

@ Rayofsunshine: The way you’ve come on here the last few years and insulted traditional Labour voters who have the temerity to question the Council for it’s failings, has put me off voting Labour for a long time. I even showed my Mam what you’d written, she’s Labour to the core, and she was astonished by your arrogance, insults and general childishness. All my family, around 10 in all, will not vote Labour anymore. Primarily because the Council’s bungling over several issues and because the party’s full of Momentum followers like you. The type who call anyone who disagrees with them a “Tory”, “Racist” or “Parasite”. You have lost several national elections, the red wall turned blue and the share of Labour’s vote in Salford is falling steadily. And yet you continue on the road to electoral oblivion. So go on, call me a “Tory”, say “Salford will always be red!” and stick your head in the sand and ignore everything, because it’s what you and the Labour Party in general do best.

#Rayofsunshine. Well if its a confederacy of dunces that's standing that's a sad reflection of the dismal educational standards that the Salford Labour Party preside over. Schools that were hopeless 40 years ago are still hopeless now. Schools that were decent 40 years are now becoming hopeless. Is this the equality that Labour so obsess about. They obviously aspire to make everyone equally stupid. Is this some very clever electoral strategy to maintain power forever? Keep the electorate thinking they're thick so they think the donkeys running the council are clever?

A sad day for Salford Labour Party, when Howard Balkind, Salford Labour Councillor for eight years, and Stephen Ord, Salford Labour Councillor for eight years, both have to find new political homes. The once great Labour Party is no more, now usurped by the hard left bully boys of momentum. We'll see even more decent Labour Councillors and members leave, and not just in Salford. It's all too reminiscent of labour in the early eighties, and I'm sorry to say, Labour's wilderness years are set to return.

🇷🇺 Communism alive and Kicking in the communist state of Salford 2021 Censorship in the Soviet state of Salford is pervasive and strictly enforced by Commisars directing party Goons Henchmen to attack local community opinion that clashes with the party mechanism or smooth runnings known to some Censorship is performed in two main directions: State secrets were handled by the General Directorate for the Protection of State Secrets in the Press (also known as Glavlit), which was in charge of censoring all publications and broadcasting for state secrets Censorship, in accordance with the official ideology and politics of the Communist Party was performed by several organizations: Goskomizdat censored all printed matter: fiction, poetry, etc. Goskino, in charge of cinema Gosteleradio, in charge of radio and television broadcasting The First Department in many agencies and institutions, such as the State Statistical Committee (Goskomstat), was responsible for assuring that state secrets and other sensitive information only reached authorized hands. All media in the Soviet Union was controlled by the state including television and radio broadcasting, newspaper, magazine, and book publishing. This was achieved by state ownership of all production facilities, thus making all those employed in media state employees. This extended to the fine arts including the theater, opera, and ballet. Art and music was controlled by ownership of distribution and performance venues. Censorship was backed in cases where performances did not meet with the favor of the Soviet leadership, with newspaper campaigns against offending material and sanctions applied through party-controlled professional organizations. In the case of book publishing, a manuscript had to pass censorship and the decision of a state owned publishing house to publish and distribute the book. Books which met with official favor, for example, the collected speeches of Leonid Brezhnev were printed in vast quantities while less favored literary material might be published in limited numbers and not distributed widely. [17] Possession and use of copying machines was tightly controlled in order to hinder production and distribution of samizdat, illegal self-published books and magazines.[18] Possession of even a single samizdat manuscript such as a book by Andrei Sinyavsky was a serious crime which might involve a visit from the KGB. Another outlet for works which did not find favor with the authorities was publishing abroad.[18] It was the practice of libraries in the Soviet Union to restrict access to back issues of journals and newspapers more than three years old.[18] Jamming of foreign radio stations Edit Soviet-era jamming tower in Minsk, Belarus Due to the appearance of foreign radio stations broadcasting in Russian territory and inaccessibility for censorship, as well as the appearance of a large number of shortwave receivers, massive jamming of these stations was applied in the USSR using high-power radio-electronic equipment. It continued for almost 60 years. The Soviet radio censorship network was the most powerful in the world. All information related to radio jamming and usage of corresponding equipment was considered a state secret. On the eve of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, the Olympic Panorama magazine intended to publish a photo with a hardly noticeable jamming tower located in the Fili District. Despite the photo being of a public place, it was approved for publication only after the tower was cut from it. The production of receivers with wavelengths shorter than 25 meters was also controlled. Receivers with those ranges were primarily exported and were sold very rarely within the country. Circumvention of censorship Edit Samizdat, allegorical styles, smuggling, and tamizdat (publishing abroad) were used as methods of circumventing censorship. For example, an underground library was functioning in Odessa from 1967 to 1982, which was used by around 2,000 readers. Soviet dissidents were active fighters against censorship. Samizdat was the main method of information dissemination. Such organizations as the Moscow Helsinki Group and the Free Interprofessional Labor Union were also engaged in similar activities. There were cases of literary hoaxes, where authors made up a translated source. Poet Vladimir Lifschitz, for instance, invented a British poet named James Clifford, who allegedly died in 1944 on the Western Front. Vladimir published poetry which he claimed was written by James Clifford, but which was actually his own work. One more method was a so-called "dog method". According to this, one should include an obviously ridiculous and attention-drawing vivid episode in the work. As a result, minor nuances went unnoticed. In this manner, a movie named The Diamond Arm was saved after the director, Leonid Gaidai, intentionally included a nuclear explosion at the end of the film. The Goskino commission was horrified and requested that the explosion be removed. After resisting for a while, Gaidai removed the explosion and the rest of the film was left almost untouched. One of the important information channels were anecdotes. Through this, folklore from people often express their critical attitude to authorities and communist ideology. Political anecdotes became widespread in the 60s and 70s. 80s 90s 20’s

Well, Hello, again, Darlinks! Last Friday morning, I went to the Town Hall Gardens on my trusty turbo-powered mobility scooter having had plenty of time during lockdown to check the electrolyte levels in my batteries, the air pressures in my tyres and tighten my nuts. I must say she looked a treat - the chrome all polished and shiny and the stickers and decorative pennants gaily wafting in the breeze. Speeding out of the Salford Maximum Security Twilight Home for Bewildered Geriatrics (rated as “Outstanding” by the CQC) she performed well, doing a series of “wheelies” along Bolton Road and Manchester Road. Curious readers, you may be wondering as to my reasons for going to the “Gardens of Lost Opportunities and Broken Promises”. Well, they were three-fold: firstly to take advantage of the Town Hall’s superb wi-fi (it saves on my data); secondly to take advantage of the free charging point and thirdly, one of my Town Hall molettes told me that the list of Candidates was to be announced. I positioned myself under the window of HRH Mayor Dennette’s Balcony and Window and switched on the Hearing Aid Loop in readiness for the events about to unfold. I must say that the Loop is mightily impressive, giving a mightily clear signal, and with my binoculars trained on the Bank’s windows opposite, reflecting the inside of HRH The Mayor’s Inner Sanctum, aka the “Egg Shaped Office”. You could say that I had a ringside seat of the dramas, tantrums and history about to unfold. Seated at the head of his Conference Table sat HRH The Mayor, drumming his fingers on the table, flanked by Cllr Merry, flicking the remains of his Bacon & Egg Balm and wiping the egg drips off his lapel, and by Cllr Warmisham in his bhudda pose, pretending to visualise events – he was having a nap. A nervous knock at the door was followed by the booming voice of HRH The Mayor, “ENTER”. The double doors opened and in stepped one of the Mayoral Flunkies, in full Town Hall ceremonial uniform of powdered wig, stockings and tails, carrying a silver platter upon which was a scroll of The Candidates. He bowed to HRH The Mayor and nodded to his left and right to Cllrs Merry and Warmisham, (the latter coming out of his “visualisation” evinced by the opening of one eye) and presented the silver platter. The Mayoral Flunky bowed and made a hasty retreat, backwards and closed the doors of the Egg Shaped Office. HRH The Mayor looked suspiciously at the scroll as though he was being proffered a poison chalice, “Merry, get it!” he said with a slight tremulosity in his voice. Cllr Merry cleared his throat, swallowing a few crumbs and bacon rind from under his false teeth and, taking advantage of Cllr Warmisham’s stupor, Merry told him to get it. The latter still not fully out of his “visualisation” took the scroll just like an obedient lapdog. It must have been the realisation of what he had just done that jolted Cllr Warmisham back to reality. Standing to attention in recognition of the momentous occasion, he quickly unrolled the scroll and scanned it with breakneck speed and was left like a goldfish gasping for water with him mouth and chins moving synchronously, after expletively exclaiming in “Meldrew-esque” tones, “I don’t believe it!” Cllr Merry grabbed the scroll and perused its contents. He blanched. “I need comfort food!” and reached into his pocket and retrieved a cheese and pickle sandwich which he had been saving for such emergencies. “Oh you wimpish minions” declared HRH The Mayor, “give it here!” HRH The Mayor applied, what he liked to think of, his stiletto-like analytical skills to the reading of The Scroll, particularly to the Independent candidates. “Some old familiar names here! I see that Boudicca of t’Height, Ms Ferrer, has thrown her name in the hat together with Joe O’Neill and Christopher Barnes. Those three must the advocates of “Grey Power” and escapees from the Salford Maximum Security Twilight Home for Bewildered Geriatrics (rated as “Outstanding” by the CQC) – I bet she made an escape ladder from her surgical support stockings allowing their escape. “I know all the rest too but one name I don’t recognise is this Jonathan fellow.” “Oh, he must the Leader of the Grey Power’s Youth Wing, after all he is under 65!” said Cllr Merry in one of his rare moments of perspicacity, lucidity and sarcastic wit. “My ward spies tell me he is the “Alan Titchmarsh” or “Monty Don” of the Greys” added Cllr Warmisham. “I foresee no problems here!” continued HRH The Mayor who stood up and went to the Mayoral Balcony then threw open the doors and declared to the people of Salford, “We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in Blackfriars and Trinity, we shall fight on the t ’Height of Claremont and all the other wards where independents stand. We shall defend our island of Socialist perfection, whatever the cost may be. We will fight in Swinton Park. We shall fight on the fairways, we shall fight them in the rough, we shall fight on the greens and in the clubhouse (subject to the Government over-ruling our “objections” on its development thereof, hopefully). We will never surrender our right to rule!” Cllrs Merry & Warmisham rolled their eyes to the heavens. “Has he had his medication?” Just as they rolled their eyes upwards, HRH The Mayor rolled his downwards and espied me. “It is for the little people of Salford like that little old man on his scooter with his hearing amplification device skilfully inserted and his binoculars that we fight.” Cllr Warmisham jumped up and ran to the Mayoral Balcony and peered down. “It’s Hedley Hopper, Salford Star’s Own, Geriatric Curmudgeonly Political Commentator, Fashionista, Entertainment Correspondent, Drummer and now ….Weather Forecaster. I bet he’s heard everything! Call out the Mayoral Flunkies to apprehend him and send him back to Matron Myra at Salford Maximum Security Twilight Home for Bewildered Geriatrics (rated as “Outstanding” by the CQC)! Deciding that discretion is the better part of valour, I sped off over the immaculately manicured lawns of the “Gardens of Lost Opportunities and Broken Promises” and zoomed up Pendlebury Road, past Asda and by Bus Stop near Morrisons on Swinton Hall Road who should I bump into but some of the Independent Candidates denigratingly referred to as “The Greys” by HRH The Mayor holding an impromptu and entirely spontaneous hustings. From the back of a big yellow van, a rousing chorus of community singing, lead by “The Greys” very own “Monty Don” and “Youth Leader”, which included those old favourites, “Time to vote for Barnesy, local, vocal, gobby and Grey. Time to vote for Jo-ho, local, vocal, gobby and Bald” and a verse of “Mary, Mary”. Afterwards, Joe O’Neill regaled locals Ethel and Ada Yates and Tiffany Cholmondley, (mother of six), and three of her children, Sherry Prosecco (4), Chantelle Cherry Bangles (3) and Markus Lukus (2). In a stirring speech, interrupted only by the traffic and reminiscent of a Shakespearean speech, Joe launched SLOPS (Salford Liberation of Pensioners Society). “Friends, Salfordians, citizens, lend me your ears; I come to bury Labour, not to praise them." The speech continued but was not heard in its entirety as Ethel and Ada’s bus came along, Ethel holding up the bus as she could not find her bus pass and by Barnsey having a long gossip with a former colleague about the “Bus Game”, as he calls it. Joe gave up when Markus Lukus had a row with his sisters over a lollipop. In the meantime, the Greys’ “Monty Don” was spotted wandering along Swinton Hall Rd, taking cuttings from hedgerows, doing a spot of weeding and advising locals on water features, gazeboes and garden fung shui. I sped off in the opposite direction, chuckling & musing to myself that it’s going to be an interesting election now the starting pistol has fired!

Kev asks and I can now say I was asked to stand by the Reform Party (aka UKIP) in this 2021 Mayor election. I explained to get change in Salford we must not split the vote. This does not mean an easy win for Conservatives but it does give hope and a great boost to the chances of independents winning Council seats that is going to change Salford. I welcome Mary, Joe, Christopher and Andrew and welcome the excellent Greens Howard and Wendy. I know these would bring amazing qualities. I am also delighted to be seeing Robin and Karen bring experience and pleased to see the really nice guy Jake of the Liberals. Salford Council would be a people’s grass rooted Council if all these get elected. Proud of the unique diversity offered by these brave citizens of Salford.

Absolutely love the list of candidates it proves many residents are determined to bring a wind of change. It will take a 12% increase in voter turn out and Salford Labour will go into a minority status. Covid has made Labour seats no longer safe with voters being alerted to a growing need for better services. I forecast a hung Salford Council between Tory, Liberal, Green and Independents.
