Star date: 27th October 2020 WEBSITES SHOW FREE MEALS FOR HALF TERM Salford has 243 new confirmed cases of coronavirus bringing the cumulative total to 7,527, with 1,483 cases in the last seven days of data and a case rate per 100,000 of 573. There have been no new virus-related deaths at Salford Royal Hospital. Meanwhile, the campaign to feed hungry children over half term is intensifying with two websites giving names of businesses, services and organisations offering meals, while there's also a Don't Let Our Kids Starve demo this Saturday, while Salford and Eccles MP, Rebecca Long Bailey will speak at a related online People Before Profit rally. Salford has 243 new confirmed cases of coronavirus bringing the cumulative total to 7,527, up from the previous day's 7,284. Salford has now had 1,483 cases in the last seven days of data with a rate per 100,000 population of 573. Elsewhere in Greater Manchester, cases in Manchester during the latest seven day data period were 2,690 (up from 2,665), with a rate of 486 (up from 482). Other boroughs stats are Bolton 1,520 (up from 1,452), with a rate of 528.6 (up from 505), Oldham 1,413 (up from 1,325), with a rate of 595.9 (up from 558.8), Wigan 1,882 (up from 1,747), with a rate of 572.6 (up from 531.5), Tameside 1,007 (up from 972), with a rate of 444.6 (up from 429.2), Rochdale 1,280 (up from 1,245), with a rate of 575.5 (up from 559.8), Stockport 1,056 (up from 1,003), with a rate of 359.9 (up from 341.8), Bury 982 (up from 921), with a rate of 514.2 (up from 482.2), and Trafford 947 (up from 887), with a rate of 399 (up from 373.7). There have been no new virus-related deaths reported at Salford Royal Hospital. Meanwhile, as the Government continues to come under pressure for not providing free meals for hungry children during the half term holidays, two new websites have sprung up collating the names of businesses, services and organisations offering meals. www.freemeals.uk and www.schoolmealfinder.org/ allow parents and carers to enter their postcode or city and a list of willing places pops up, with the latter having more on offer currently. Indeed, the school meal finder site shows almost a dozen nearby businesses offering help, from the Langworthy Cornerstone to Mr Chips in Swinton to the Kidzrus Nursery on South Langworthy Road. On Saturday 31st October there's a Don't Let Our Kids Starve National Day of Action, with a rally outside Boots on Market Street, Manchester, at 11:30am, followed by a march to Manchester Town Hall. For those who can't attend there's also an online People Before Profit rally from 12noon, with a link to the live protests. Together with the campaign for free children's meals, the theme is 'Extend furlough to stop the job loss nightmare', as the furlough scheme also ends on that day. Speakers at the online rally include Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long Bailey, John McDonnell MP, Michael Rosen, author and poet, Wilf Sullivan, TUC Race Equality Officer and Karen Reissman, NHS nurse and UNISON NEC. | Well you do not have to be a member of the labour party to loathe thatcher and the policies of greed and destruction industry health education and society that we see all around us today thatchers policies. I am not a member of the labour party i have stood in elections against the labour party when the party of blair privatised the NHStook the country in to illegal wars and against the thatcherite policies that blair persued pfi ppi neoliberalism and the madness of the market system and other such tory policies that thatcher espoused this cold hearted pig who said Blair and new labour was her greatest achievement and if you want to talk about education i was against academies and the bullying OFSTED inspectors who terrified many decent teachers which led to such pressure trying to hit pie in the sky targets so impossible that some poor teachers were driven to suicide seems to be a contradiction in your post about education who do you think messed it up bad parents bad kids no bad state policy the systems not geared to give a full rounded education to individuals is it it is designed to put people in there place education is a con and working class kids can see it the whole system is a con and working class kids see it and feel it and working class kids are written off because they do not feel part of this society like thatcher said there is no such thing as society and you have the brass neck typical of your type do not give a name whinge moan and say society is in a mess and respect does not exist no wonder some kids kick against this failed system. safety nets are in place oh yeah a food bank or charity is not a safety net social security and better benefits with enough money to live on like people had in 1980s the supposed bad old days that was the safety net that has been destroyed and you propagate the same old twaddle and of course and here is the point in1980 i heared the same from tory daily mail/ sun crap loud mouthed smug ignorant bone heads about bad parenting and loads of jobs if you want them nothings changed and isnt it lovely having charitable institutions that is if you do not have to use them your self of course. i of course welcomed the arrival of people coming to the UK to work however i am sure you are aware many many eastern Europeans and people from around the world have been driven out of the UK by racism and the creating of an hostile atmosphere of which we are suffering the consequences of in the NHS nursing shortages and the work place. i and many others have seen a better way of living when we had well paid secure jobs social security and we were self sufficient in energy and food and i remember the thriving mining communities which had the hearts ripped out of them by that evil bastard thatcher and i stood on a picket lines defending those communities with men who had fought in the war for this country and were beaten by thatchers police along with there wives and children fighting for the right to work i now see the devastating impact on the former coal fields where the economy is now the economy of drugs like most of the country is and people like you little alf garnets and Richard Littlejohns of this world people may want to re write history well while i am able to do so along with many others you wont get away with it the cause of the breakdown of the UK is thatcherism and the free market economy which has made this country a whole lot worse for working people than it was in the 1970s and 80s i know because i was there in 2020 it is now tory state policy to starve a kid to save a quid the anti dote to tory barbarism is for the labour party to use the peoples manifesto from the 2019 election and offer the policies that will deliver for the many not the few. |

| @Paul Kelly - you are obviously a nice bloke, and you care passionately about the labour party as evidenced by your loathing of Thatcher, Alf Garnet, The Daily Mail and The Sun.. However we are now living in 2020, not 1980 and there are plenty of jobs out there for people who WANT TO work. (As evidenced by the thriving Eastern European communities who have made their homes in our area since Tony Blair opened our countries borders in 2004). I know a good many of these recent arrivals in the UK - as I am married to one. They look at our education system with horror - they see that as the problem - an education system unfit for purpose, that churns out kids with bad attitudes, no respect for their parents, teachers, the law or anyone else in society for that matter. This rotten education system doesn't prepare children for life, it is of generally insuffcient standard to inspire them into exam success or successful careers and its got nothing to do with Thatcher, Alf Garnet, The Sun or the Mail. Child hunger only exists in this country because of crap parents. All the safety nets are already in place - and for those unlucky enough to fall through the safety net then there are numerous charitable institutions which step in to care. Look at the fantastic educational establishments in Salford -The Albion for example - which is consistently amongst the highest producer of NEETS in the country - whats that got to do with Thatcher ?? The Labour party needs to give its head a wobble, stop bleating on about the past and sort out the present. Hows about starting off with improving exam success and career/life aspiration. |

| History repeats bobs fan club i remember reading your post in the daily mail and the sun in the early 80s but you forgot to add that single parents are ruining the country scrounging on welfare having countless kids at your expense receiving endless state hand outs and none of them want to work filing buses with screaming kids and prams taking all the space they even have the cheek to have television sets begrudge begrudge begrudge they are all at it bloody scroungers and all this going on while we tory patriots were destroying the industrial heart of the country. And the type of cretin who came out with this crap council house Tories little alf garnets were housed schooled and had the NHS to give them a decent start in life i grew up in the 60s and we had an outside bog blah blah and i knew poverty and my parents worked very hard and a lot of other parents worked hard and still suffered extreme poverty why was that any answers Ragged Trousered Philanthropists and today i see just as much poverty today here is a quick answer go and visit a food bank or do a bit of voluntary work with homeless people or speak to them most of them had difficult childhoods and lived in poverty people who suffer addiction problems from drinking to gamblers you may learn something to cure your ignorance and it goes without question that any body who advocates voting Tory is a Tory always has been a Tory and always will be a Tory THATCHER THE TORY TOOK MILK OF THE CHILDREN THATCHER STARVED THE MINERS CHILDREN AND NOW THE TORIES STARVE THE MINORS IS THIS A PATTERN GET ON THE MARCH ON SATURDAY KICK THE TORIES OUT. |

| Well, the problem of hungry kids is not a new one,I too remember what it was like in that era, yes, it was worse ,and in the thirties from what my mum and gran told me it was worse still.I see a lot of this bad parenting as you mention, and if your sister is on the front line as it were (and I can hazard a guess what area), then she will know better than anyone whats going on. The trouble is though, a lot of good people are skint as well. People who are just poor who get housing benefit who have to top the rent up to greedy landlords because housing benefit does not pay enough. I know people who were doing ok and owned their own houses before they pulled their houses down, now they are skint and paying rent. The Torys hate working class people having anything because they are greedy. Labour want the working class and the slightly better offs all skint as well. they want people to live in squalor so they will vote Labour. We need a new system, but I doubt we will ever get one. Labour and Tories wont change anything. By the way, a great article by wrote @19-15-11. I agree with all you say.I will never vote Tory or Labour. |

| A friend told me the Government has given local Councils the cash to provide the meals. I urge my Tory member colleagues within Salford Council to demand a full public report on the facts about Salford school meals funding. Also demand to publish any compensation amounts paid out to developers where Council has lost any appeals. Thank you MarcusR for pushing the buttons on the school meals, great player and public justice Hero I admire. |

| Just a quick question - have you ever seen any of theses hundreds of starving children in Salford ? My sister who is a primary school teacher in a very challenging area of North Manchester is very much against this latest push towards feeding "hungry" children as she sees it as just another way for crap parents to escape responsibility for caring for their children - and these free meals during school holidays is just another way of legitimising their bad parenting. She goes on to say that it is very sad that the labour party are turning this non-issue into a political storm in a tea cup. My own memories of growing up in 1960s Salford and the poverty I witnessed everyday in my class mates at primary school just doesnt exist anymore. What do you think ? |
