With trick or treating being discouraged on Halloween this year due to real life virus horrors, and no house parties allowed, a very clever COVID-secure fun adventure for children and families has been developed.
The idea is that children find a rock, paint it with a spooky design, add their name and 'Facebook Salford Rocks', and then hide it in a local park. On Halloween weekend everyone goes out hunting Halloween rocks, and then posts photographs of them on the Facebook group Salford Rocks*, so children who have hidden rocks can see if they've been found.
"Our idea came from a community retreat that me and Sarah Whitehead went to, and we brought it home to plan a Halloween Rocks adventure as trick or treating events are mostly called off" says Keri Muldoon from Friends of Green Grosvenor Park "It's the children's half term so this will give them a little thing to do and look out for. We spoke to Lexi, one of the admins who run Salford Rocks on Facebook and she was happy to join in and let us expand her marvellous group."
Sarah adds: "COVID-19 hasn't stopped our communities coming together, creating and looking at different and safe ways of doing things. We're encouraging people to try something new and have fun getting out of the house to visit our wonderful green spaces that we have in Salford. So keep your eyes open for a spooky treat this Halloween and have a lovely safe time doing it..."
Salix Homes provided a small grant for 'rock packs' containing pebbles, acrylic paints, brushes, sponge and felt pens, which have been delivered to groups in Ordsall, Weaste, Broughton, Kersal and Swinton. There are still a few left – enquire to Keri at the *Salford Rocks Facebook page – click here
Salford Rocks also has a competition running until 31st October - anyone who posts a rock photo will be entered into a draw to win a prize.
