Star date: 27th March 2020

IRLAM ELDERLY TO RECEIVE FLOWERS BUT RELATIONSHIPS GETTING STRAINED AT HOME

Salford now has 52 confirmed cases of coronavirus, up by five from the previous day. Meanwhile, at 11:30am this morning, hundreds of elderly and vulnerable people in Irlam will receive bunches of flowers grown at Princes Park Garden Centre.

While the community rallies around, behind closed doors relationships are getting strained concludes a new Quarrels in Quarantine survey.

Salford now has 52 confirmed cases of coronavirus, up by five from the previous day, and now the second highest number of cases in Greater Manchester, behind Manchester which has 55.

Oldham and Stockport now have 48 cases, followed by Trafford with 46, Tameside 40, Rochdale 38, Bury 27, Bolton 25 and Wigan with 16.

As the statistics become grimmer by the day, the currently closed Princes Park Garden Centre in Irlam is cutting thousands of its flowers and making them into hundreds of bunches which will be given away to the elderly and vulnerable today at 11:30am by staff, volunteers and members of Centre's management committee, with partner organisation Helping Hands.

"Even the killer virus is helping to bring a degree of happiness into the lives of our older and most vulnerable people with the message stay home and stay safe" says Alec McFadden, Chair of Princes Park Garden Centre.

As the Salford community rallies round to help others, a new Quarrels in Quarantine survey reveals that behind closed doors things aren't so rosy...

CherryDigital.co, a public relations agency, conducted a survey of 3,800 Brits to find out how self-isolation due to Covid-19 is affecting people's relationships and found that a large majority - 68% - of respondents said working from home every day has already put a strain on their relationship with their partner.

Eight days is the longest the average person admits they could work from home with their partner before things become tense; 72% said that they do not have enough room to work comfortably from home if they live with their partner; and over half (61%) said working from home actually increases their productivity despite distractions from kids, pets and the tv.

The agency gives the following tips to un-strain relationships...

1) If you find yourselves having to work in close quarters, you can each use a pair of headphones to zone out and forget your significant other is in the room. This will allow you both to get through your to-do lists and organise your thoughts without having the other person distract you.

2) Learn a new hobby together. Now is the perfect time to maximise bonding through activities such as cooking (buy your ingredients online to minimise contact) or learn a new language.

3) Spend at least an hour per day on some sort of exercise routine. There are tons of at-home workout videos available online such as yoga, HIIT, dance routines and pilates.

4) Ease additional stress by keeping your home neat and tidy by splitting up the household chores.

STAY IN. Get in the back garden (if you have one), Chill out and get your suntan lotion on, relax, take it easy. Only go out to the shops for your bog rolls etc. In the evening, do something you haven't done in years, play cards, play boardgames like frustration and monopoly. Only go out only for exercise a hour a day. Help the old people you know in your street, go knock on there door (keep distance), ask if they want anything from shops.. STAY IN.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
