For International Women's Day this year, there's two events happening on the same day at the same time...
On Saturday 7th March, at 2pm, the Working Class Movement Library in Salford is hosting an afternoon focussed on Sylvia Pankhurst, and her biographer, Katherine Connelly, will be talking about Sylvia's writings on A Suffragette in America, based on her experiences during two lecture tours of North America in 1911 and 1912.
"Sylvia Pankhurst went to America at an exciting moment - when thousands of women workers were taking strike action and demanding a future with 'bread and roses'" says Katherine "Her uncompleted book - now readily available for the first time - provides an exciting glimpse into Sylvia's politics at this time.
"In it she describes the spirit of striking women workers and the plight of Native Americans, and offers a haunting, first-hand account of racism in the prisons of 'Jim Crow'-era Tennessee" she adds "Her powerful account of exploitation and oppression in capitalist America remains hugely relevant today..."

Also on Saturday 7th March, at 2pm, is the Mary Quaile Club talk on feminism and science fiction with best-selling novelist, Una McCormack, who will be discussing the work of science fiction writers Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018) and Vonda N. McIntyre (1948-2019).
The two women, who were lifelong friends, were pivotal to the expansion and development of feminist science fiction in the 1970s and 1980s, and the talk will cover some of their key novels, like Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed, and McIntyre's The Exile Waiting and Starfarers.
Una McCormack has written many science fiction novels including both Star Trek and Doctor Who as well as writing for Big Finish series of Doctor Who audio adventures. Her most recent novels are The Undefeated and Star Trek Picard: The Last Best Hope.
In the second half of the event the audience will be asked to share their own visions and dreams of the future...
