DOZENS OF SALFORD COMMUNITY GROUPS HELPED DURING PANDEMIC – AND MORE FUNDS AVAILABLE

Greater Manchester charity, Forever Manchester, has given out a staggering £3million to 655 community groups since the start of the pandemic, including to almost one hundred groups in Salford. 

Now a new Forever Manchester fund is open called Made By Sport, with grants of £2,021 for community sports groups working with children and young people that have been affected by the pandemic.

Since the start of the pandemic, Greater Manchester charity, Forever Manchester, has given out grants worth over £3million to 655 community groups in the region, including to almost one hundred groups in Salford, ranging from Loaves and Fishes to the Broughton Boxing Academy to the Salford Survivor Project.*

Working with UK Community Foundations, Forever Manchester distributed funding raised by the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Appeal to groups directly affected by the coronavirus crisis.

The Broughton Boxing Academy had to suspend its normal activities during the lockdowns and instead collected food, walked dogs and provided essential items for isolating families. It also created a twelve week fitness and wellbeing programme, together with an information booklet containing general fitness and health advice, while  providing details of available support services for those without access to the internet. The Forever Manchester grant helped them to maintain this activity.

Meanwhile, Dancing With Dementia in Swinton was also a recipient of a Forever Manchester grant, switching from its sessions at the Grand Palais to phone-based and other practical support for its vulnerable members and those in self-isolated households. The Hug in a Mug Café in Walkden which also held sessions for the group provided meals for Dancing with Dementia volunteers to distribute to members. Altogether, two hundred people living with dementia were helped with deliveries of meals and other essentials during the lockdowns.

Salford Heart Care was another group supported by funding from Forever Manchester. The support service aims to prevent heart disease and heart attacks, reduce social isolation, improve general health and wellbeing and provide after care for people with heart conditions and long-term illnesses. During the pandemic, the group has helped its vulnerable membership to be able to access support by telephone, as well as delivering essential items to those who were shielding or self-isolating.

St James in Higher Broughton runs a community food pantry, and during the pandemic has provided hot meals and drinks, as well as delivering food parcels to vulnerable people and those who were self-isolating, while also signposting people to other support services. The grant from Forever Manchester enabled St James to buy essential food supplies, extra catering equipment, biodegradable takeaway cartons and cutlery, and additional cleaning products.

Forever Manchester, in partnership with Cheshire Datasystems Limited, also helped the JC Foundation Trust and Salford Pride to use technology to adapt their activities in Salford, while the Kings Square Library also benefited from a Forever Manchester grant for small self managed community groups.

Now, a new fund has opened in partnership with Forever Manchester, the Made By Sport Fund offering awards of up to £2,021 to grass roots community sports groups based in Greater Manchester that have had their activities affected by the pandemic. .

The Fund is aimed at "clubs or organisations which intentionally use sport to deliver wider social outcomes (sport for development) and who primarily work with children and young people aged 5-25" states Forever Manchester.

Awards are aimed at sports organisations that are delivering one or more of these criteria - Developing Life Skills, Improving Mental Health, Reducing Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour, Developing Employability Skills and Building Stronger Communities.
