This Saturday, 21st September, the Salford Histories Festival arrives in Walkden for the first time, at the Walkden Methodist Church on Manchester Road, for a full day of stalls, displays, talks and a Walkden Heritage Trail led by Mike Corless (10:30am-12:30pm). The whole day is free, with arts and crafts for children.
Around thirty local history stalls at the event organised by Salford Local History Forum will cover everything from the Save Victoria Theatre campaign, to Broughton House, Astley Green Mining and the Salford Streets Museum, with talks on the Liverpool to Manchester Railway (David George 12-1pm); Recent Archaeological Discoveries in Salford (Mike Nevell 1:30-2:30pm) and Building The Manchester Ship Canal (Judith Atkinson 2:30-3:30pm).
There will also be a display of Red Saunder's incredible Peterloo Tableau, a sale of local history books and a model of the Worsley Steamboat, plus lots more, including, at 1pm, the presentation of this year's Frank Mullineux Award by the Ceremonial Mayor.
"The Salford Histories Festival was originally at Salford Museum and Art Gallery around Heritage Day, but all of a sudden it was decided not to do it any more" recalls Paul Kelly of the Forum "Salford City Council, in its wisdom, decided that Salford's great history was not really needed and that people didn't want to go to it every year.
"We thought 'No, no, no', so five years ago, as local people, we decided voluntarily and without any funding to resurrect it and it's gone from strength to strength every year" he adds "It started in Ordsall Library, then the Methodist Church on Chapel Street and now we're in Walkden next week."
"It began with about ten stalls and this year has about thirty stalls, as it's gone from strength to strength" he says "It's getting bigger every year. It should be a really good day and hopefully we'll keep it going for the grass roots of Salford as long as possible. It's about maintaining the history of Salford."
