LATEST SALFORD SAVING PEOPLE SHELTER OPEN
The recently closed Unicorn pub in Eccles has become the latest building to be occupied as a Saving People Shelter, providing a roof for around a dozen homeless people.
The shelter has been operating for about a month, providing sanctuary for people who have fallen through the welfare net, including those with mental health problems, benefit sanctions and some who cannot claim benefits. Full details here...

The recently closed Unicorn pub in Eccles has become the sixth occupied building in the town over the last few years, after it was converted into the latest Saving People Shelter about a month ago. The shelters have sprung up in empty buildings and have lasted until being evicted by the courts, merely moving on to other places. An old vets and a disused chemist were the last such occupations providing a roof for homeless people who would otherwise be on the streets. "At the chemist we had two elderly people and a vulnerable adult with mental health issues, yet twenty bailiffs turned up to throw us out onto the streets" recalls Stuart Potts of the Shelter. "I think they want to knock the Unicorn down but it's old, from around 1886, and should be listed" he adds "We hope to stay as long as possible and come to some agreement with the owners; maybe offer them some sort of rent. We could even open the side as a Salford Reds car park, and everyone will be a winner." The Shelter is providing a home for around a dozen people who would otherwise probably be on the streets, including those with mental health problems, benefit sanctions and some who cannot claim benefits. "The place was an absolute shambles when we arrived so we all cleaned it and tidied it, while our residents are learning life skills and trades as well" Stuart explains "We've upholstered old stools and the pool table, we're doing gardening work growing our own veg, and some are doing their CSCS card which trains them to go on sites." While the authorities frown on such 'illegal' occupations, the police and Citizens Advice have referred people informally to the shelters in the past, and the public have been "absolutely brilliant" Stuart says. "Salford Council come nowhere near, and we're sick of sending people there only to get turned down or sent to Narrowgate" he adds "We are, however, trying to get people re-housed but basically we're trying to fill in the cracks in the welfare system."

I don't know how old you are, DJB, but if you're under fifty then you can always do your bit for Queen and Country by joining the Territorial Army. So there's still some time left for you to emulate your heroes and do a couple of tours of duty in Syria or somewhere similar.

No never did make the leap to serving my country, left school at 16 and have worked pretty much every day since, from a YTS scheme, warehouse work, working in retail, driving jobs and office work I've always found a way to get a decent job and earn my living. You know ROSSI a working class Salford lad who works hard to have a decent life, was brought up to respect his elders, give the protectors of the country he lives in the reverence they deserve and take pride in his community. | In the summer months,one Sunday afternoon, me and my 2kids went on bike ride down agecroft and through Drinkwater park towards Clifton. We passed FOREST BANK prison and stopped and smelt a nice smell from the kitchens. A nice Sunday roast for all the prisoners. This bloke Stuart Potts will be getting 3meals a day and a decent kip. When his fella gets out,he SHOULD get a flat and help of a social worker. |

| I fully agree with Darrens comment about this guy Stuart potts, and I take back my unkind comments that I made as a knee jerk reaction to what happened. When you sit down and think about what happened, perhaps this guy does have a few mental issues caused by his situation. no person of normal mind would have done what he did. They get extra points for that alone, and Ray knows this.For being former service people you do not get the same extra credit the Asylums get. | Ive done some digging on Stuart Potts. He studied at mcr university. He was once a family man with 4kids living in winton,Eccles. He had a few different jobs,cobbler, locksmith,painter/decorator and in factorys. He suffered a breakdown after losing his family. Hes been homeless since summer2017. He was living in a tent in Manchester and I think he had a place briefly on borough rd, weaste. He has been in a few squats around Eccles. The unicorn pub,the old NHS building, Albert Edward pub, etc. He was once living on the side of Bridgewater canal, where he fished for food and bathed in the canal at paticroft bridge for about a month. He has been to Salford council housing offices countless times for a flat and He's being told "HE'S NOT A PRIORITY". This bloke did something STUPID and DISGRACEFUL on Sun10November. Now hes serving 16weeks jail. What will happen when this man gets out.??? I think he needs help. Salford council should give him a place to live and somebody to support this guy. FRESH START...The above is what I've found on numerous articles about this guy. |

Sounds like a good idea. | Bob the regular,what hard,objective evidence do you have to support your claim that the authorities will always favour asylum seekers as opposed to ex-services when it comes to allocating housing?
In cases where an asylum seeker and ex-services are seen as having the same "needs",then housing will be allocated according to which applicant has been on the waiting list for the longest period of time. |

| Ray, it sounds like you know that under the scenario I outlined , the asylum seeker given leave to stay would always be given priority over someone who has served in forces for 10 years, assuming other criteria were the same in both cases.Am I telling the truth or not? A lad, born in Salford with links here, with a wife and 2 kids , who has done say 10 years in the military, has a lower priority than an asylum seeker here for six months who has just been given leave to stay who also has a wife and two kids. That is a fact, and Ray cannot deny it. I have that on good authority. If Ray disputes this, can he show how the allocation criteria is worked out? Answer is he cannot. | The military covenant that our Ray goes on about used to mean something. The idea was, that because we don't have compulsory service as other countries do, those that chose to do so got better benefits when they left service. Things like going to the top of the housing list when they left the forces. There used to be a rule that if a lad served in the forces, his parents were entitled to have a bedroom for him when he was on leave. I am sure Ray will agree with me when I say that the Tory government has treated our former military personnel very bad, but people like our council are just as bad when it comes to housing preference to military veterans. We all know Salford council put other people before them. |

We agree they should stay where they are at least they are staying warm and hving a warm bath if they get moved where are they going to go don't chuck them out back on the streets think about the deaths of the homeless who are on the streets and getting all the abuse of people and not getting the right help. Contact people locally get them onside.

| It looks like this site will be developed. What would normally happen to sites like this? Well first it would get tinned up,at great cost,( this is to extract best deal from planners , and stop caravan people squatting on site) then robbers would break in steal cable and pipes, after about 18 months 2 year development would start. can someone not think of an informal way to "regularise" . this situation? this would involve someone charging these people a bit of rent, paid for by benefit,on the understanding they move out as soon as development is to start? this would win all round, these people would have a roof over their heads, it would save on tinning up cost, save on vandalism, and bring the owners a few bob as well. If the scheme worked, i am sure there would always be a supply of redundant property to use.trouble is though ,once people are allowed in,they seem to think that they aquire rights to stay there, and that is what stops people doing such schemes. |
