SALFORD DISABLED WOMAN STUCK IN BUILDING SITE HELL

Star date: 10th April 2019 CANON GREEN REFURBISHMENT HELL OF DISABLED WOMAN Salix Homes is currently building 108 rent to buy 'affordable' apartments in the grounds of Canon Green Court, whilst refurbishing existing blocks – which is a double whammy for disabled woman Sharon Hooley who is living a drilling, clanging, dusty nightmare and cannot get a decant to another property. "The whole place is vibrating, and even my dog is having anxiety attacks! I feel like I'm being forced out of my property every time the drilling starts" says Sharon, who has now been forced to seek a Section 184 Homelessness Act move due to her disability, depression and anxiety. Exactly two years ago, the Salford Star reported on the plight of Sharon Hooley, a disabled woman living on the ground floor of Canon Green Court in Blackfriars. Back then, it was the mould and damp that was making her life hell... "It's horrendous...you just want to give up sometimes it's that bad" said Sharon at the time "We literally have pools of water in the two bedrooms..." * Could things get any worse? Oh yes! Salix Homes, which owns the blocks, promised to bring the flats up to a decent standard as part of its stock transfer deal with Salford City Council – but then decided it couldn't afford the refurbishment unless it built 108 new 'affordable' rent to buy apartments for young professionals in the grounds of the estate. Now, building work has started on the new block, while the refurbishment begins on the old blocks. And it's all happening literally on the doorstep of Sharon's flat. And above it. And on all sides of it. Her dust covered bedroom window has workmen a few yards away, there's drilling coming through the ceiling and through all the side walls, and it's making life hell all over again for Sharon, who is not only severely physically disabled but also suffers from autism... "Because I'm on the gable end, I've got banging and drilling on every side, and when the drilling starts, because of my autism, my communication goes so I can't actually speak" she explains "It got to the stage where I had two Salix workers here and I couldn't speak as I was so anxious and stressed. There was drilling and banging while they were here. "It's mentally exhausting" she adds "I can't go to any room to get away from the noise. If I put the tv on I can't hear it, if I put headphones on with music I can hear it, and I've even bought earplugs which makes it a bit duller but I can still feel it through the chairs, the toilet...the whole place is vibrating. Even my dog is having anxiety attacks! I feel like I'm being forced out of my property every time it starts as I'm woken up by a massive clang outside and then the drilling." Sharon, who has lived in the flat for almost 11 years and has never been in arrears with the rent, asked Salix for a 'decant' to another suitable property while the work is continuing – but, while the company didn't refuse it, she wasn't offered anywhere else. Now Sharon is being forced to bypass Salix and apply under Section 184 of the Homelessness Act to try and force a move. "It's for when you are in a property that does not suit your needs and is actually making you ill" she explains "It's my only option because Salix has admitted that they can't put me anywhere. Now I'm in limbo while I'm applying for the 184. But they knew this building work was happening so why they couldn't have got it organised beforehand I don't know." The last time Salix offered Sharon a move, because of the mould and damp, was three years ago – and that was refused as it was a first floor flat that she couldn't access. It took two people just to lift her wheelchair in to look around! Instead, Salix inserted an airbrick into her bedroom wall to try to alleviate the damp and mould. Now that airbrick is letting in all the noise and dust from the building site outside her window. And that's just on the inside. To go out for the day in her wheelchair means Sharon trying to negotiate dropped kerbs that keep moving, constantly arriving and departing contractor vehicles and taking a huge detour via the one manned gate at the far end of the complex. "It's disgusting and I know I'm not the only one" she adds "There's a gentleman over the way who is totally housebound and the noise is driving him nuts. 'Disappointed and let down' is a very mild way of putting it. I'm appalled at what they are doing to me and other disabled people."
The Salford Star asked Salix Homes to comment but so far the company has not responded...

| Anon seems a wise and considerate person who seems to know about the law in this area. This is something that due to good fortune me and the people I know have not had to deal with.Perhaps what Sharon needs is a consultation with one of the heavy handed militant lefty type tennants lawyers that London seems to be full of.Don't know of any round here though. The mere threat of a cessation of work injunction would be enough to puts the shits good style up Salix. They will soon find her a suitable property to live in .Good luck to anyone who has a go at these bolshy shitbags Salix , city west, the council and all the rest of them. |

| Wow, we do live in an entitled society don’t we!!??!!
You may have noticed that construction is happening right across the country, with lots happening in Salford and Manchester. It is temporary and it is happening whether we like it or not.
When they put proper roofs onto my house To replace the leaking flat ones, despite the inconvenience at the time....I too have disabilities... I knew it was for the greater good, and got on with it. I didn’t run to the press, nor did my neighbours some who were elderly and disabled, WE GOT ON WITH IT. But that was 30 years ago and there was none of this entitled attitude back then. If I can’t get out of bed because of the pain I’m in, I don’t call council to demand they do something about it, or the Star to see if they will come and take photos....I GET ON WITH IT.
Oh and Rossi, I see you are no longer crying and threatening to boycott the site because you thought you were being censored! Some of your posts on here are so ridiculously pathetic. |

| To ALL THAT GLITTERS. Do you have problems reading? This Salford Star news story is about the plight of a mentally and physically disabled adult, who is trying to cope with the noise and disruption caused by the ongoing refurbishment works. It is not about her dog. Under the Land Compensation Act of 1973 combined with the Care Act 2014, it states that reasonable adjustments should be made for those with disabilities. Sharon who features in this Salford Star story, suffers from Autism. Having Autism means that you cannot deal with loud noise or sudden changes made to your lifestyle. So to an Autistic Adult, the refurbishment works can be severely stressful. By law, her Landlord should have made reasonable adjustments and relocated her to an appropriate property. Under the Land Compensation Act of 1973, such a relocation should have been paid for by the Landlord. Under the Care Act 2014, Social Services combined with the Landlord should have secured a temporary property before refurbishments started. The excuse used by the landlord, that they don’t have a property to Decant Sharon too, is not an excuse. No refurbishment works should have been undertaken until suitable arrangements could be made for all the vulnerable adults who live at Canon Green. So ALL THAT GLITTERS, maybe you should get your facts right before going on a rant about a dog that has the Landlords permission to live there. |

| All That Glitters comment sums up one of the things that is wrong with life today, and that is, a lack of compassion. How anyone can be so anal, so by-the-rules, is beyond me. It's almost like something you read in the pages of a Dickens novel, Oliver Twist (think the Harry Secombe character in charge of the workhouse/orphanage in the musical Oliver), or Ebenezer in A Christmas Carol. Such People, the kind of people who would begrudge a disabled woman a little dog, I honestly can't find words for such people. They need to get a heart, start doing things with compassion and use their own discretion and common sense, that's if they have any. |

I do not dispute for one minute that she is telling the truth on this and neither should you.we should all show a little bit of compassion for people less mobile than ourselves. |

| I am not misguided. You sign a tenancy agreement. It's the rules . It's a contract . You agreed to it signed it so YOU broke the rules.... ship out. I lived in a high rise and a dog next door howled when the owner was away.... I ended up terminating my tenancy as I could not sleep |

| Looking back to my time at that block. I remember one day seeing water flowing out from an overflow pipe. Ball cock gone faulty. It looked a lot worse to people who do not know , as it was going right off the balcony at top floor level and hitting the street 60 foot below. all that was needed was for someone to turn off the water and wait for the plumber to come and fix the ball valve. I knocked onto the old guys flat it was, and he said he had told salix a couple of hours earlier. I went in his flat, and at the same time the salix first responder arrived. This man seemed a bit thick, and could not speak proper english, he could not understand the situation. The isolation valve near the cold water tank was obvious to see, but it was a bit stiff. I went to my flat to get my grips, and when i returned, minutes later, Isaw the first responder driving off in his van. Water still pissing out all over the place. I closed the valve and the water stopped. I then phoned salix to tell them what had happened and they said they would send someone out. they did, but it was next day. The point I am making is that the first responder should have been competant to turn off the water or gas or electric , and do basic safety things.Salix are just useless, but I best their bosses get paid thousands. |

| All That Glitters seems a bit misguided. It is part of our ethnic and cultural identity to own cats and dogs. Other people who come to live in our country have different ethnic and cultural traditions regarding animals which as a multi cultural society we all respect and cherish. So why can we not have dogs and cats? Why can someone like Sharon not have a little pet dog for company? Years ago, we all lived in much denser housing than we do now with high rise. The housing was OK if a little old ,it could be, and often was refurbished to a high standard. Just look at the old workers cottages in Worsley, built at the same time as the houses Salford council knocked down. Salford council did not own these old houses, that is why they CPO ordered them and pulled them down. They wanted socialist power over the working classes , and it all went wrong for them.Now look at the mess we are in. |

| Just been shown this article by a friend, as I used to live on that block.I used to talk to Sharon and her little dog when I lived there. Sharon has much to put up with and a lot to complain about. One thing Sharon does not complain about, is the mice and rats. Many of the people on my landing on the sixth floor were infested with the mice. I was lucky, I wasn't, but there again, I had my dog which probably kept them at bay. Perhaps little Emily is doing her duty and guarding Sharons place from this vermin. It is coming to election time, and I hope Sharon mentions the vermin when the councilors come round knocking. |

| Firstly, I'd like to say thank you to those who know a bit more about me and Emily. Secondly, those that presume without knowing the facts are going to look a little silly. When I moved in, I had no idea what was coming. I wasn't told about the damp and mould and I had no idea that my 'back pain' was due to something more serious. I was working and independent. I managed to decorate the place. Fast forward 2 years and little did I know that one morning I would not be able to move without extreme agony. I lost my job and my whole world collapsed and had nothing to get up for, untill I rescued Emily. I rang Salix and asked for permission to have a dog and I have it in writing that it was ok as long as it was a small dog. 6 months later and Emily was part of my life. Though my medical conditions are worse and my disabilities have now trebled, I don't think I would be here if I didn't have her. She, at the moment is the one thing keeping me sane living here. She's an angel. She copes with my meltdowns and anxiety attacks by comforting me and makes sure to make me smile each day. So now you all know that my dog was never the problem please tell me who is? I voted NO when we were asked to vote yes for Salix to take control. I knew this would all happen. Just like Brexit and all the promises then. But leaving vulnerable people in environments that make thier health and disabilities worse should be, in my opinion, a criminal offence.

| Salix Thieved the Land they Required from Canon Green Residents via Salford Council!
Now the Tenants can Go Whistle as Salix don't give a Toss along with the Council.
The Tenants should prepare for a Cheap & Nasty Refurb as the Main Players have got the go ahead for the New Build they wanted to Profit from, & NO Party involved will be Held Accountable.

| What Bob said makes my blood boil. This arrogant XXXXXXX councilor.For all this person knows,this dog could be a medical type that warns people about insulin levels and things of that nature. Thats not the point though, our caring wonderful socialist council should house people like this poor lady in suitable type accomodation. By that ,I mean a level entrance bungalow kitted out with wide wheelchair type doors throughout,and a wetroom type bathroom for disabled people. It goes without saying that such a place should also be damp free and energy efficiant. Easy to do I worked on loads of these in my time. |

| Obvious this is one of the old school councilors, heartless bastards they are. I remember during the clearances of the sixties all my grans friends in tears at having to have their dogs and cats put down so they could be rehoused in the councils multi storey souless shitholes. There are quite a few dog owners on that block, I was one of them. The dog owners on that block are the most responsible you can get, and nice people as well. This also shows how stupid our councilors are. Sharon and her sweet little dog Emily have there own little garden space as you can see. They do not share facilties with anyone else. For example, they do not have to share a lift with people that might have strong religious views on the cleanliness of dogs, who might be offended by Emily being present.As I seem to recall, there were one or two none Salfordians people who lived on that block who objected to dogs being there.Could this be the thin end of the wedge of official policy to try and get rid of our four legged friends? Good luck Sharon and Emily. |

| Dogs and cats are not allowed in high rise blocks. Due to noise and no access to grounds. If you have a front door tgen you might be allowed. Problems arise when you have to move and if you cannot have a ground floor you are very limited if you want to keep your pet. Read you tenancy agreement it's what you signed up for! |

| I was talking to a local councillor about this problem two days ago. This is what he said," As much as feel sorry for the party concerned,residents should not have Dogs or cats in multi story properties". I just walked away from him in disgust. This really shows how our local councillors feel towards people who voted for them. |

| So sorry to hear of Sharon's plight. She is a good person and deserves to be treated better, and so do the rest of the many good people on that block.Salix do not give a damn about peoples well being and neither do the council. I have a feeling that we are going to hear a lot more about these wonderful "improvements".

| The thing about Sharon's dog is worrying. I live in Magnolia Court and workers are drilling and hammering for hours at a time, as they endeavour to replace the flammable materials on the outside of the building. It's very stressful. Now imagine if you're a dog, whose hearing is ten times better than a humans. Absolutely terrible. Salix should show residents and their pets a bit of respect and house them somewhere else while the work is on going, should the tenant wish to get away from the workers doing their thing. |
