All sorts of crazy stuff goes on in Salford, most of which is unseen and unheralded. But today, to celebrate the start of 2020 we're launching a competition to find the maddest thing in the city right now.

This could be an artwork, a band, a poet, a business, a club, a fashion item, a person, a house...literally anything that readers think everyone needs to know about. Something that's off the wall and out of the box, and exciting...

And the person who suggests the maddest thing will win a bottle of Sensi Prosecco Gold, courtesy of Kingsland Drinks in Irlam.

Simply email us your idea, photos, whatever, to info@salfordstar.com, marked Maddest Thing In Salford Dept – include your name and email address – by 10th January and this golden bottle of Prosecco could be winging its way to you...Except that we ain't paying for postage so the winner will have to provide an address in Salford where we can drop it off.

Dear Readers, Sorry but Uncle Hedley insisted that I include his name, to ensure I win and give him the crate of 1959 Dom Pérignon Champagne at £32328.24 a bottle that the “Star” is giving away! In his dreams!! As if I would jeopardise his lifetime membership of AA (including Home Start Option) and as if the “Star” would give away a crate of that most excellent vintage. I fully expect it’ll be a bottle of Allidlesco’s Lambrusco…but I won’t complain if I won. ANYWAY….my Nomination for “Maddest Thing In Salford 2020” is the Salford Council’s Joint Entry with Manchester City Council for its Regent Road (so called) “Improvements”! All that time, driver frustration, congestion, etc for a few new white lines, moving a few bollards, widening a couple of slip roads off Regent Road and introduce a No Left Turn has resulted in – as the French say, “Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose”: • No change in congestion • No change in travel times • No Improvement in drivers’ lane discipline • No compliance with road signage • Et al! In support of Salford Council’s Joint Entry with Manchester City Council, I would cite: (a) the decreasing speed limit approaching The Crescent; by slowing traffic, congestion is increased as indeed is pollution. Its effect reminds me of the tsunami painting “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Katsushika Hokusai. (b) The Bus Lane on The Crescent increases vehicular congestion and pollution; suspending the Bus Lane on Eccles Old Road in Hope has reduced congestion and pollution. By ridding Salford of these sacred cows resting atop the altar of lip service to green issues will get traffic moving and actually reduce pollution overall at peak times in this area but relieve congestion on other eastern entry pinch-points. (c) Agree and apply a uniform standard for measuring pollution and congestion; not just selecting certain times of the day or certain locations to measure pollution but a city-wide standard to measure pollution and not to be afraid of removing former “improvements” to get traffic moving that have actually increased congestion and pollution. For instance, replacing the traffic chicanes on Cross Lane with pelican crossings (keeping the Lollipop Person at School times) should stop traffic backing up onto Broad St, Liverpool St and other feeder roads and so keeping it moving. (d) Sensible public transport routes running at times when customers need them and at prices they can afford to attract personal transport users to switch to public transport. By highlighting these few examples, hopefully Salford Council will start to think outside of the box! Discuss! Incidentally, I am not a petrolhead or diesel advocate - I drive an electric vehicle just like Uncle Hedley but mine is an Electric Bugatti Veyron! (yeah, right!)!

The big red sign on Briar hill court in the middle of Salford precinct. It says "Salford shopping centre" with a arrow pointing down. It's mad.

That the mayor thinks it's OK to live in social housing on £60k a year, when there is a massive waiting list. An what's more bizarre is Salfordians will probably vote him back in...

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO STOP THE STAR

Star date: 16th May 2021

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
