Today is local election day in Salford, and voting takes place between 7am and 10pm. 19 seats are up for grabs, with 105 candidates standing for a variety of parties and as Independents.
Hotly contested wards include Irlam and Cadishead, where the CORE Party, now part of the Independents Alliance, got close to taking the seats last year, and former Labour Party safe seat, Kersal, where the Tories will be looking to be re-elected, although there is the unknown quantity of the Veterans and Peoples Party.
Meanwhile, Eccles sees eight candidates standing; the usual parties - Tories, Labour, Greens, LibDems and UKIP plus the Women's Equality Party, Socialist Alternative and Independent, Stef Lorenz.
Other interesting fights include Weaste and Seedley, where former Labour Party Councillor Paul Wilson is standing as an Independent, and Swinton South, where Independent Carol Boyce is standing on the Campbell Road housing issue. Ordsall also has an Independent, Alex Haida, thrown into the mix, while Langworthy has a choice of six candidates, including For Britain and Socialist Alternative.
Meanwhile, veteran campaigners, Mary Ferrer in Claremont, and Joe O'Neill in Pendlebury, will be giving it another go as Independents.
