SALFORD CITY COUNCIL TO SPEND £2.5MILLION ON NEW LAPTOPS AND SOFTWARE

Star date: 10th October 2019 2,125 COUNCIL LAPTOPS TO BE REPLACED Salford City Council is about to spend around £2.5million on replacing 2,125 laptops for staff, including around £250,000 to replace IT hardware that Capita is keeping when Urban Vision reverts back to the Council in February 2020. More Council staff are about to get brand new laptops to cope with the Windows 10 operating system in a £2.5million IT overhaul. 1,256 laptops have already been substituted, leaving a further 2,125 that must be replaced, according to a Council report, "as a matter of urgency" before Microsoft support for Windows 7 ceases in January 2020... "A large number of existing devices are not capable of running this new operating system which requires more power, memory and enhanced security than its predecessor" the report explains. "Failure to invest in systems in accordance with advice is false economy, and the business of the Council must not be put at risk of cyber-attacks which threaten data and the closure of those systems, and the serious legal financial and reputational consequences which flow" the report adds. The cost includes £250,000 to be spent on IT hardware as Urban Vision goes back in-house under Council ownership in February 2020... "As part of the existing infrastructure arrangements all IT hardware is supplied by the partnership company Capita, as such all IT hardware reverts to their ownership at the end of the contractual arrangement" the report states "Consequently the council will need to supply up to date IT hardware (laptops etc) to ensure the continual operation of these transitioned services on day one." The funding for the upgrades is coming from the Council's 'technology refresh budget' and 'earmarked reserves', including the 'capital programme for supporting Urban Vision return'... The equipment will be procured via framework agreement EA16 with supplier XMA, which the report states "ensures that competitive pricing has been secured" and that the Council will obtain "discounted pricing based on enhanced volumes from other partner authorities"...

| Sorry Arnold nearly all the software my company uses is backward compatible. And as to your figures for firewalls £40.000 each has baffled me. We have successfully upgraded in the past hard drive capacity and memeory to work with the increased work of the machines we use and have purchased reasonably priced licences. I think we will have to agree to disagree. |

| retired socialist - Looked on Microsoft's site. The cost to the council would be at least half a million quid for the extra support....and then they'd have to spend the money anyway on new laptops after that expires.
You're also forgetting that software developers won't make newer versions of their software compatible with Windows 7 and then there'd then be no choice to upgrade.
It also isn't £1000 per laptop. The money is for IT infrastructure so could include anything really. A firewall, for example would typically cost about £40,000 each. |

| Arnold why not choose Microsoft offer of extended support? it still works out a better deal than one over Labours great deal of a £1000 laptop. You answer a question without a list of figures i would like to see options not one more Laptop Labour giveaway. |

| Broughton boy is right. The council can't keep windows 7 machines running after January. They'd be riddled with malware in minutes.
As for retired socialist, you clearly have never seen the processing overhead that comes from having a computer connected to a corporate network. Yes, the existing ones probably would be fine for watching Netflix at home but they won't be when you add remote authentication, login scripts, profiles, synced docs, virus checks, group policy and everything else that's needed. |

| Are we asset stripping already ? Let's ignore the obvious price hikes council is paying for this equipment for a second. The body that took over the development of the city is being returned to the council...with the private contractor keeping the profitable (and usable) assets. I take it we're keeping the vans, the offices, the tools and the staff (sic) ? or will they be next to go before Capita leave ? Council Officers have a habit of doing this. |

| £2.5million on laptops, what's happened to Salford council being SKINT. We can ave roughly 90 police officers walking on the beat in SALFORD for that. Yet the council cronies can get a WHOPPING 2.5million from a fund called "technology refresh budget". In the meantime, the council has cut many millions each year to services in Salford.. |

| Get real beat me to the calculator. The question that I ask, is can the council really afford this expense?They are going to have to pay that property company about ten million pounds compensation for that failed deal where the old police station was on the crescent.I heard a couple of guys talking about it on the golf course last week, that's the number they were talking about. Can it really be that much? Why are they keeping it under wraps. |

| Capita, what a company, it runs GMP computer system which is a failure, It runs the Armed service's promotion campaign,It is also lost thousand of sick and disabled people their benefits, not to mention it has a very large stake in the NHS for supplying services. All which turned out to be a disaster. So it no surprise that Salford City Council use them. Capita must be making billions from UK services all of which turn out bad for us. |

| Simple Maths : £2,500,000 minus £250,000 = £2,250,000 divided by 2,150 new laptops = £1,046 per laptop !!!! Wow -- how can I get an IT Supply contract with a local authority !! and this price is after a "competitive pricing has been secured"... lets just say it again £1,046 per laptop !!! |

| Funny when my Laptop came with 7 Microsoft offered free of charge the windows 10 upgrade, the council were renowned for virtually giving away for peanuts the laptops and computer systems of retired councillors at a knock down price. But lets be realistic Salford Labour are all good socailst free with other peoples money, as any one seen the figures to upgrade if any exist? |
