Today, the Office for National Statistics, or ONS, has released figures for all deaths up to 1st May (and registered up to 9th May).
In Salford, there were 102 sad coronavirus-related deaths in care homes, the highest number in Greater Manchester, and the 11th highest in the country. The figure has increased from 77 deaths in care homes up to 24th April (see here).
During this period, Manchester had 49 care home virus deaths, while Stockport had 80, the second highest in Greater Manchester.
During this period, Salford had 142 hospital deaths from the virus, 10 deaths at home and one in a hospice. Virus-related deaths in care homes were 40% of the total in Salford.
Also during this period, deaths from all causes, apart from COVID-19, totalled 237 at home, 466 in hospital, 274 in care homes, 38 in a hospice, five in other communal establishments and ten elsewhere.
In response to the national care home statistics which show 8,312 coronavirus-related deaths registered up to 1st May, Councillor Ian Hudspeth, Chairman of the Local Government Association's Community Wellbeing Board, said: "Every death from this virus is a tragedy and each of these figures represents another shocking and terrible loss of a family member and friend. No one in care should have to suffer from this dreadful disease.
"Social care is the frontline in the fight against coronavirus and while it is encouraging that we have seen a week-on-week fall in care home fatalities from COVID-19, we need to continue doing all we can to shield our most elderly and vulnerable, including those receiving care in their own homes" he added

"Councils want to play their full part in the national effort to defeat this disease, but need help and information to understand where the outbreaks are happening and be able to act quickly to contain them" he explained "The Government needs to share this vital and up-to-date data with councils, as part of any contact tracing programme.
"It is also crucial the Government's online PPE ordering system needs to be fully operational as soon as possible, so that councils and care providers can directly request that critical protective equipment gets to the frontline where it is desperately needed" he concluded.
On a lighter note, Salford Royal Hospital has reported no new virus-related deaths today.
