Star date: 18th February 2018

FOR SALFORD PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALWAYS MEANT TO VISIT 'THAT BIG VICTORIAN HOUSE ON THE CRESCENT'...

On Friday 23rd February between 2pm and 5pm, Salford's 'hidden gem' Working Class Movement Library is holding a drop-in as part of a HiDDEN8 event.

"If you've kept meaning to drop into that big Victorian house on the Crescent, today's the day" states Lynette from the Library "We're targeting Salfordians who've always meant to come in for a nosey." Not to be missed.

The Working Class Movement Library on the Crescent is one of those places that loads of people have never visited. Yet it really is a 'hidden gem'. Never mind the stately homes of the rich and sourful, this Victorian building houses a one-off collection of artefacts depicting working class struggles through the ages.

From books to badges, from political pottery to strike leaflets, the Library, founded by Ruth and Eddie Frow, is a unique and welcoming centre crammed full of meaningful history.

On Friday 23rd February, between 2pm and 5pm, the Library is holding a drop-in aimed at anyone who still hasn't visited the place

"We're targeting Salfordians who've always meant to come in for a nosey" says the Library's Lynette Cawthra "If you've kept meaning to drop into that big Victorian house on the Crescent, today's the day! We're offering an opportunity to explore and find out more about how to get involved with the Library.

"Our ground floor displays offer a great starting point for you to find out more about the sort of treasures we have here, on subjects like the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 - when armed cavalrymen and soldiers attacked a large peaceful crowd in Manchester - and about the women who campaigned one hundred years ago for the right to vote" she adds.

There will also be a special display about political activist and writer Thomas Paine, who was born in February 1737. A tradition grew up, at the time of government crackdowns on people protesting after the Peterloo Massacre, for folk of a radical disposition to gather together to celebrate Paine's birthday, so the timing is apt. And there's free tea and cake too...

The drop-in afternoon is a part of a HiDDEN8 event, promoting eight local hidden gems, including the Jewish Museum, the Museum of Transport, Chetham's Library and the Greater Manchester Police Museum (see here for full details). There's also a 'hiding' competition, to take photos of yourself hiding in one of the hidden gems, with the best one each week being crowned on Twitter (see here for details)

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO STOP THE STAR

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
