While International Workers Memorial Day officially falls on 28th April, Salford has always had its ceremony a week before, so next Saturday, 22nd April, at 1pm, there will be a short gathering to remember all miners lost in the pits of the Irwell Valley.
It will take place by the miners' monument on Agecroft Road which is by the entrance to the old Agecroft Colliery. The monument was erected with a small memorial garden in 2014 as part of the Irwell Valley Mining Project (see here).
Unfortunately, last year, two founder members of the group, Madge Kelly, a proud miner's wife and community activist from Lower Broughton, and Kersal councillor and environmentalist Harry Davies, passed away*.
Next Saturday, as part of the memorial service a special plaque will be unveiled to both Madge and Harry by Ivor Kelly and Linda Davies.
Everyone is invited to attend and show their respects.
